I am BU. Holiday parks and 'chavs'!

My dsis has informed me that I would be mad to book a Haven holiday in the UK since it will be full of rough people and chavs.

I have never been so I have no idea of the type of clientele.

I'm honest enough to admit that the thought of being surrounded by Jezza Kyle types is a little daunting.

There'll be dh and I along with our 3 dc and I just don't want to fork out a lot of money and feel uncomfortable and unable to use the facilities.

I hate judging people based on how they look/sound etc but she's been before and has really worried me!

A right mixture. I had a very friendly (genuinely) chap tell me I was carrying our son "like them blackies do" once because he was in a wrap on my back. He thought it was fab, but his turn of phrase was a little unusual! So yes, I understand what your sister is getting at, but I don't really understand why that would make you uncomfortable and unable to use the facilities? I also sat on the poolside breastfeeding in a bikini next to a lady in full burka, it was a marginally awkward moment.

m0therofdragons · 23/05/2016 20:03

I think the holiday where i came across the roughest guests was all inclusive in Kenya. Most people keep themselves to themselves in holiday parks.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 23/05/2016 20:04

I think it depends on the site. I've been to a few and there are some I've enjoyed more than others. Noise was a serious issue on one site, just wish I could remember which one.

Namechangeagain9 · 23/05/2016 20:04

I go and I'm neither rough or posh. I've always found a mix of people from all walks of life. The purpose is a family holiday aimed at the kids, who all seem to have a ball. Are there people there I'd avoid I real life, yes, but I could say the same for any holiday I've had.

We are out of the park most days on day trips but come back for 6 ish for the kids entertainment then back to our digs by around 9 so kids in bed, wine out and tv or games out. We go with another family so have our own nights out 'in' if you see what I mean.

The kids will love it and there is enough there to stop then whining Grin

QueenCuntyFlippers · 23/05/2016 20:04

It's well rough.

Well, the one I went to was! I'll not go back - the kids loved it though.

Kimononono · 23/05/2016 20:04

We went to one in the north west and it was very expensive! £1.15 for a pint of milk Shock!

It was full of chavs too but was genuinly shocked how the could bloody afford it !

chosenone · 23/05/2016 20:04

I recommend Reighton Sands nr Scarborough...small and family friendly. Primrose Valley up the road was a little more 'busy' and 'teeny'. There is a real 'mix' of people but i'm fine with that. My exh took the DC to Pontins and he said that was rougher than rough in comparison to Haven!

Meeep · 23/05/2016 20:04

We have been, out of season.
It was fine.
You don't have to go to the bingo you know.

The working class and the middle class rub along quite nicely together there I think. Didn't see any mega-toffs I must admit, but perhaps they were in the camping bit?

CantWaitForWarmWeather · 23/05/2016 20:04

Grin Oh FFS.

I go every year to a Haven holiday and it's lovely. im going to one next week and I'm really looking forward to it.

I think you're just being a bit silly if you ask me. People who aren't middle class like to go on holiday too, and just because they aren't middle class it doesn't equal chav.

exLtEveDallas · 23/05/2016 20:06

We have a static caravan in a 'chav city' seaside town. We bloody well love it. There is absolutely tons of stuff to do with DD - the beach, the dunes, a fair, a splash zone, a pool, amusements, animal farm, play park, adventure park, pier, horse riding and the evening entertainment for children: Magic shows, balloon shows, Crazy Kev & Dinky, Mr Mayhem, Chunky Russell, Nutty Noah - bloody hell there are hundreds of them!

We have all that plus time to ourselves when she is playing with other kids, peace and quiet, a comfy caravan, 15 different bars and restaurants, live music, comedians, party bands and the odd Z list celeb (X Factor 'losers', BGT finalists, Shane Richie Junior)

Sure there are lots of UJ shorts and vests, plenty of drinkers, some choice language and smokers...but there are also a lot of decent people who love their kids and want them to have a good time. Lots of people that know how to have fun. Lots of people that couldn't give a damn what other people think of them. Lots of people having a well earned holiday and making the most of it - no matter what the crappy English weather throws at them.

I could tell you to take that stick out of your arse and have fun. But I have a feeling you've already judged it and found it wanting. So you'll be unhappy in any case.

Waltermittythesequel · 23/05/2016 20:07

Yes, I read my post nanna.

Why? Are there lots of mistakes?

Look, I've explained that I mean no disrespect or insult. I can't think of another way to phrase it and I have quoted my sister.

You can choose to think I'm being a snob or goady or whatever or you can take my word for it that that's not the intention.

I'm not a snob. I'm not afraid of the great unwashed. If you knew where I was from in Dublin, you would know that.

But it's precisely because of where I'm from that I am a bit antsy about a certain type of person; people I grew up with and their children who made my life miserable, and my siblings too.

I don't want that for my children.

Some of these places sound lovely and I will check them out.

I'm assuming geography played a part in my sister's unfortunate experience, judging from the responses.

I went for the first time a few weeks ago to a Haven. The kids loved it. The van was clean and tidy. It was however very chavtastic. Two of the group had their phones stolen (separate nights in separate locations) but the children really enjoyed themselves. I wouldn't be racing back out of choice but would probably go for the kids.

Anyone for popcorn?

Myusernameismyusername · 23/05/2016 20:07

I only go for the bingo!

bigbuttons · 23/05/2016 20:11

They are rough as hell. I've been and would never go back.

Went to Haven last year in Devon, loved it enough to book for another holiday in Yorkshire in a month and half, can't wait. It feels very like the Butlins holidays I had when I was young, loads of entertainment for my DS and the standard musical show and bingo in the evening.

bilbodog · 23/05/2016 20:11

Ive got 🍷 To go with the popcorn .......

Ginmakesitallok · 23/05/2016 20:12

We went to a havenue site earlier this year. I was very pleasantly surprised. The van was fabulous, spotless throughout. The entertainment wasn't our thing, but we had a great time.

MerdTheFuck · 23/05/2016 20:12

I don't quite know what to say - except that you're Walter-Mittying all wrong.

Shouldn't you be telling us about your luxurious cruise trips where you saved the life of some minor Royal while stabilising the economy or something ... instead of whining about whether a holiday camp might be a bit rough?

Disappointed. Grin

wasonthelist · 23/05/2016 20:12

Roughest looking/sounding/behaving people I've met were at an all inclusive in Turkey (they were Brits). I got threatened for telling their son not to shine his powerful laser in my eyes. I won't be rushing back there. Since Haven probably doesn't sell illegal laser pens or Tshirts that say "Fuck the dictionary - use Google" or illegal DVD copies, I imagine it might be more fun.

MissusWrex · 23/05/2016 20:13

We go to Butlins.

I'm not sure if we are chavs or not? Is being poor and on benefits enough or do we have to rob people too? Grin

witsender · 23/05/2016 20:13

We went to Perran Sands I think it was in Cornwall...and even better, booked it through the Sun cheapies so even with upgrades it was under 100 for the week. Fabulous spot, backing right onto the sand dunes.

Janefromdowntheroad · 23/05/2016 20:14

Honestly OP it depends where you go. I've been to a few which were lovely. One which was awful, pissed parents round the pool at 10am, a fight between drunk mums at soft play, swearing kids, security everywhere. The kids loved it Grin
