A man that looks on glass
On it may stay his eye

Reminds me of Margaret Thatcher.

IsItGinTimeYet · 24/05/2016 21:44

I can't even hum the following in my own head without welling up, it always breaks me.

Walk with me, oh my Lord,
Through the darkest night and brightest day
Be at my side, oh Lord,
Hold my hand and guide me on my way.

Sometimes the road seems long,
My energy is spent.
Then, Lord, I think of you
And I am given strength

Walk with me, oh my Lord,
Through the darkest night and brightest day
Be at my side, oh Lord,
Hold my hand and guide me on my way.

Stones often bar my path,
And there are times I fall,
But you are always there
To help me when I call.

Walk with me, oh my Lord,
Through the darkest night and brightest day
Be at my side, oh Lord,
Hold my hand and guide me on my way.

Just as you calmed the wind
And walked across the sea
Conquer, my living Lord
The storms that threaten me

Walk with me, oh my Lord,
Through the darkest night and brightest day
Be at my side, oh Lord,
Hold my hand and guide me on my way.

Help me to pierce the mists
That cloud my heart and mind,
So that I shall not fear
The steepest mountain-side.

As once you healed the lame
And gave sight to the blind
Help me when I'm downcast
To hold my head up high.

Walk with me, oh my Lord
Through the darkest night and brightest day
Be at my side, oh Lord
Hold my hand and guide me on my way

LarrytheCucumber · 24/05/2016 22:00

Wow. I haven't even heard that one.

PresidentOliviaMumsnet · 24/05/2016 22:09

Love Walk With Me- used to sing it a LOT at school.
We had it at my DS1's Christening but no one knew it Sad so didn't bother for the other three DC.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 24/05/2016 22:27

pity our sorrows, calm our fears.
And soothe with hope our misery.

CallWaiting · 24/05/2016 22:32

teacherwith2kids
I bind unto myself today
the strong Name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One, and One in Three."

I love this! Sang it at evensong on Sunday Smile

teacherwith2kids · 24/05/2016 22:42

IsItGin,

Darth Vader's Star Wars theme was the one that got our congregation rolling with laughter. Luckily the Dead March just raised a few eyebrows from those who recognised it...

My mum is a lay reader, and very unmusical. DB's aim was to play her into the pulpit with the most inappropriate possible music when she was preaching, without her noticing a thing. It's amazing what a little improvisation and additional artistic arpeggios can achieve by way of musical disguise! [She never did work out why QUITE so many of the choir wished her a Happy Birthday one week]

PigeonPie · 24/05/2016 23:06

How lovely to find this thread! One of the reasons I stopped going to church was because I couldn't find a church which had the proper hymn book (ie the NEH!) rather than that awful 'Hymns for Today's Church' with such dreadful changes to the words. I found it so distracting and it used to make me cross.

We had Let All Mortal Flesh at our wedding as the communion hymn and so many of these others are so beautiful.

I'll remember some more in due course!

PigeonPie · 24/05/2016 23:11

Here's one of the verses of my favourites.

(left out the first line as it would give it away!)
Firm is His promise, and His mercy sure.
Tell out my soul, the greatness of the Lord
To children’s children and forevermore!

FishWithABicycle · 24/05/2016 23:18

PigeonPie line 3 also gives it away.

How about:
Who can tell what other cradle
High above the Milky Way
Still may rock the King of Heaven
On another Christmas Day?

PigeonPie · 24/05/2016 23:24

Fish, I know, I was hoping they wouldn't be noticed!

SingaSong12 · 24/05/2016 23:24

Great thread - reminds me of many lovely hymns. My favourites are My Song is love Unknown is lovely. At times of depression was comforted by the first four lines of this verse from Praise My Soul the King of Heaven-

Fatherlike he tends and spares us;
well our feeble frame he knows.
In his hand he gently bears us,
rescues us from all our foes.
(Alleluia, alleluia!
Widely yet his mercy flows!)

EffieIsATrinket · 24/05/2016 23:26

Take my voice and let me sing
Always, only, for my King
Take my intellect and use
Every power as thou shalt choose.

Enkopkaffetak · 24/05/2016 23:34

Take my life and let it be (I love this)

EffieIsATrinket · 24/05/2016 23:44

Smile that was quick Enkop! I love it too.

Anyone recognise:

Lord for ourselves; in living power remake us-
self on the cross, and Christ upon the throne,
past put behind us, for the future take us:
Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone.

Wandastartup · 24/05/2016 23:53

I love hymns. This thread is making me happy as I sing along!Smile

AGnu · 24/05/2016 23:59

I attended an Anglican church for most of my teens - this thread is bringing back many happy memories. My current church is more likely to play Rend Collective songs than hymns. I regularly whinge to DH that there aren't enough hymns & sometimes wonder about hunting for a congregation with an average age of 70+ in the hope of a good sing-song!

PigeonPie · 25/05/2016 06:35

Effiel - that's Lord for the years (I think that's what it's called).

Love that one too.

brassywind · 25/05/2016 07:07

Agnu I know what you mean. I've encouraged DS to do the odd but of altar serving at the 8 am service so I get an occasional bit of the old good hymns

LarrytheCucumber · 25/05/2016 07:22

AGnu I go to a church with a lot of over 70s in the congregation but we don't sing hymns either Sad As mentioned earlier someone has decided that younger people don't like hymns so if we want to attract younger people we can only have modern worship song with the odd hymn for good measure.
I woke up with 'Sing aloud, loud loud, sing aloud loud loud' going through my head Smile
Love 'Lord for the years' too.

LarrytheCucumber · 25/05/2016 07:26

Have we had 'When through the woods, and forest glades I wander, and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees'?

EffieIsATrinket · 25/05/2016 07:34

How Great Thou Art Larry. Amazing line!

This hymn has been mentioned already, but these lines are awesome:

Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, thy great Name we praise.

And....
Unresting, unhasting and silent as light

EffieIsATrinket · 25/05/2016 07:36

Reading my old hymnal (for perfect attendance at Sunday school 1987-8) = my new favourite hobby!

PigeonPie · 25/05/2016 07:43

Effiel - immortal, invisible :-). 'Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee'
