around 10 days ago I lost on a bus a very much loved designer piece of clothing. I was taking my newborn and toddler on bus as it was raining and it was a bit hectic as driver refused to let us on initially. Anyway next day I realise said cardigan is lost. I contacted TFL and put in lost property.

Just looked on eBay and I have just seen what I am convinced is my cardigan. Same size colour etc. It even looks like it has rain drop stippling as I lost it on a very rainy day. Seller based in London.

Obviously I know there is no way to prove exactly from photos it is mine but it's a coincidence that it was listed a day after mine went missing. the listing ended on Friday so effectively sold. I have contacted seller saying mine was lost and I'm looking to replace it- trying to appeal to them that if they did find it to return it.

Feel annoyed at myself for losing it but also that someone would sell something they find.

I know I might sound crazy but I'm just a bit peeved!!!

Message them, ask if they found it on a bus and ask for it back. Cheeky sod! (Them not you).

I think it's a bit of a leap to assume the cardigan is the one you lost on the basis of it was in London and the day after you lost it - I imagine there are many identical cardigans in a place as big as London!

Why would it still have rain drop stippling on it by the time they got it on Ebay? Surely it would have dried off? Unless the cardigan thief went straight home from the bus and listed it that very day. Which they didn't.
It's unlikely that it's yours. But not impossible.

We don't know anything about the material the cardigan was made from so if the OP says it looks like it has rain stippling on then perhaps we should believe her?

Report to EBay as a stolen item as I think that's your best bet.

Let it go. Unless it's a genuine one off, you can't say it's yours. Maybe save precious/expensive things for days you're not using public transport or likely to lose them.

You have no way of proving that it's your cardigan, there are probably thousands of the same one in London alone which given British weather could have been rained on at any point. I think it would actually be a bit mean to report it to eBay as stolen when you have no proof of that.
You've contacted the seller but really that's all you can do, you just need the chalk up this experience as a bit of bad luck and let it go. In the grand scheme of things it's only a cardigan.

YANBU. It seems to be a bit too much of a coincidence that someone in the same area is selling an identical cardigan days after you lost yours.

That's exactly what id do if I lost something I loved- check on eBay if I could re buy it and how much it would be.

You have no proof it's yours at all.
so reporting a probably innocent person to eBay would be incredibly mean.

If it is yours then the seller has committed a crime, "theft by finding".

Reporting the seller without any proof would be very stupid, let it go.

Saying that, I would most likely keep an item found on a bus, not a purse or phone or passport, but I'd probably assume that something like a cardigan would never make it back to its owner so might as well keep it.

Hi I know I must sound crazy but convinced it's mine. I know it's just a cardi but just a bit miffed. Emailed seller and said if sale does not go through I would be interested in buying as I recently lost one and am desperate to replace. No response!!

I and all my friends always check Ebay and local face book pages when things go missing/lost.

Just too much of a coincidence that day after I lost mine one is listed same siZe etc. Ebay shows you 3 months sold history and none sold like this.

I would never keep anything I found as you have no idea how sentimental something is to someone no matter how cheap or expensive the item is.

I'm not going to report seller as I have no proof. Just cheezed off.
