To think Adele 'songwriter of the year'???? Ivor Novello must be having a laugh?

Her music is bland

Her lyrics are clichéd self pitying rubbish.

The emotional range she covers is tiny (mopey) and she covers the same topic over and over again (I was dumped once)*

Every song on her album was co-written by a professional songwriter.

Yet she wins the Ivor Novello award for best songwriter? Really?

  • As an aside, am I alone in thinking obsessing over a long since departed ex across five years and two albums is a wee bit creepy?

I find her voice very over-rated. Really not nice to listen to at all. Yet people love her.

Gwenci · 19/05/2016 20:10

YANBU! I thought I was a lone voice in not having a comfy seat atop the 'Adele is the best thing to happen to music anywhere EVER' bandwagon!

She's totally creepy; 'let me photograph you in this light...'
'I must've called a thousand times...'

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/05/2016 20:11

Yanbu - I think she's dreadful. I have to leave a room/shop/whatever if I hear her voice. It sets my teeth on edge.

iklboo · 19/05/2016 20:16

She's definitely a candidate for a 'For Pete's Sake Let It Go Already-a-gram'

Backingvocals · 19/05/2016 20:16

I've been ranting on about this for years. She's utterly MOR. Songs are tedious. Delivery is painful. I lurch for the off switch whenever she comes on. She totally brings out the musical snob in me which I know makes me a bad person but honestly, this is not great music. So glad to have found some fellow Adele deniers.

Idliketobeabutterfly · 19/05/2016 20:17

I think she's in same stalker ex group at Taylor swift tbh

5tardusty · 19/05/2016 20:17

I like her.

raisedbyguineapigs · 19/05/2016 20:18

I agree. Writing the same song over and over again about the same thing must be enough for Ivor Novello these days. Although that tedious Bond song won an Oscar, so what do I know?

Backingvocals · 19/05/2016 20:20

Btw. Ivor Novello....who knew? Wink

Oh my

Janefromuptheshops · 19/05/2016 20:23

The lyrics to All I Ask are beautiful

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 19/05/2016 20:23

Yep he lived a pretty interesting life too did old Ivor, including a brief stay in choke.

I have nothing against her but don't get why she sells so well. I cannot imagine a circumstance where I'd think 'I know, let's listen to an Adele album'.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 19/05/2016 20:23

YANBU. I haven't listened to "Hello" all the way through because I csnt stand how bloody miserable her lyrics are.

Pettywoman · 19/05/2016 20:23

I cannot stand her dreary music. I wish she'd get over him and stfu.

Jimjamjoos · 19/05/2016 20:24

She used to be cool and edgy.

FluffyPineapple · 19/05/2016 20:27

Which of Novellos songs do you think are better than Adelles?

MintJulip · 19/05/2016 20:28

I think if you get it you get it.Some people think she is a genius, I never got her till the last album, which I do think was genius Smile

On the strength of this one I got her last ones, and I thought they were too miserable.

Her subject resonates with people Hmm

YvaineStormhold · 19/05/2016 20:33

Keep The Home Fires Burning is a right banger, Fluffy

I think with the right song, Adele's voice is fine.

And by the right song, I mean 'To Make You Feel My Love.' Which was written by Bob Dylan.

All the stuff she writes is repetitive, melody-free, self-pitying, bunny-boiling bollocks.

"I could have sworn you were overseas
That's what you said when you left me..."

No shit.

Charley50 · 19/05/2016 20:35

I agree. I find her voice really bland. Couldn't believe it when she had a Saturday night special devoted to her.

SaucyJack · 19/05/2016 20:40

"Someone like you" came out around the time that I broke up with a bloke I really quite liked at the time.

I howled along. Over and over and over and over.

It is just music for the recently dumped- but she does it well tbf.

sandrabedminster · 19/05/2016 20:41

Bland sells.

Ed sheran and sam smith are also shit and were the best sellers.

Agreed and if Ed Sheeran wasn' t the product of a knee trembler backstage at a Simply Red gig, I'll eat my hat.

I heard a young girl singing "All I Ask" recently at a talent show. I had never heard it before and loved it. When I got home I looked it up and found it was originally written and performed by Adelle. I never really rated her but now I'm not so sure. I don't think I would have thought much of the song if I had heard Adelle sing it first

BillSykesDog · 19/05/2016 20:49

YANBU. She sells so much because she is bland, inoffensive and appeals to the lowest common denominator.

What annoys me most about her, is that apparently she wrote a whole album which was from her heart about what her life is like now about being a mother and the relationship she's in. The record company thought it wouldn't sell so she just went back and churned out an idenikit version of the previous album because that was what she could flog.

It's so insincere. Just churning out what the plebs want for cash. It's really, really derivative too. Totally unoriginal. If you listen to old Elkie Brooks, Carly Simon, Streisand, Bassey - it's just ripped off.

And the overdone insincere emoting. Ugh.
