To think that the last proper good summer was 2003?

What is happening to our weather? It's always bloody cold and rainy.

The last proper warm sunny summer, when it was sunny all summer was 2003. Which is 13 years ago.☹️

Dd was born in July 2006. Hot all June and July, then shit August. In fact thinking about it, it's August that's always crap☹️

2003 I can remember seeing literal heat waves everywhere. You know what I mean? You can usually see it behind airplane engines when you're about to set off.

Either 2009 or 2010 our road melted & I lost my flipflop to the tar.

TheDropBear · 17/05/2016 20:07

Summers seem to be earlier now, 2009 had a massive heatwave but around end of June/July.

BonnieF · 17/05/2016 20:08

06 & 13 were pretty good, too.

We have to be realistic, though. Summers like 76 & 03 are so memorable because they are so unusual in this part of the world.

If we want that sort of weather every year, we need to move to the Med. If only.......

AppleAndBlackberry · 17/05/2016 20:13

2009 was very hot (pregnant). I remember 2011 being good too and 2012 being terrible. 2007 it rained all summer.

PuppyMonkey · 17/05/2016 20:13

I came on to say 2006 was scorchio (live in Notts) as if to prove that there has been a quite recent good summer but have now realised that 2006 was ten years ago. Shock

IonaNE · 17/05/2016 20:25

YANBU! I remember people jumping into the fountain at Trafalgar Square (me included) Grin. 2003 was indeed the last proper one.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/05/2016 20:40

It must have been the heatwave of 2003 when I was working away and I was staying in a hotel next to a very busy road so couldn't open the window and no air con either.

There was a supermarket next to the hotel and in any spare time I had I went and hung around in the freezer aisles studying the frozen food to cool down. I'm surprised I didn't get asked to leave I was there so long.

katemiddletonsnudeheels · 17/05/2016 20:42

I remember 13 and 14 being hot. 09 was too in parts.

I do personally think the Scottish school system is much better in terms of the weather. In England and Wales we bake through May and June and July, get a nice week or so and then the weather turns distinctly autumnal throughout August before turning nice and hot again in September Grin

bibbitybobbityyhat · 17/05/2016 20:46

I agree with a pp who said summers seem to be earlier now. We've had lots of fabulous Mays/Junes/Julys in recent years (with the exception of 2012) but August has been an utter wash out for decades.

I was just discussing this with a friend. She has deliberately booked her family summer holiday abroad for the second two weeks in August this year, because she wants to avoid the cold and rain of the UK at that time of year.

I have long since thought we need to change our school summer holidays, so that the children get at least a week or two more off in July and a week or two less off in August.

TattyCat · 17/05/2016 20:49

I'm with you Op. Both 1976 and 2003 really stand out. The others were just 'normal' and nice. I'm heartily sick of the weather we're getting now - I find the dreariness unbearable and feel so much better when the sun's shining.

I need to work outside and can't when there's even the slightest spot of rain so it's frustrating as hell on that score too!! Not because I'm a precious snowflake but because it would damage what I'm working on...

Hopelass · 17/05/2016 20:51

I remember 2014 summer being good esp early on. I was on mat leave and did a hell of a lot of walking, got a lovely tan and lost two stone!

Jitterybug · 17/05/2016 20:54

I don't remember 2003 being particularly hot, even though I got married and moved house that summer (still in same house, no longer married Grin).

I do look back fondly at 2013 though, the whole of July was glorious, beach trips and bbq's every weekend, paddling pool permanently in use. Oh I do hope its like that again this year.

SellFridges · 17/05/2016 20:56

2006 was the last good one. We've not had a blazer since I moved out of London.

SingingSamosa · 17/05/2016 20:58

2006 was a good summer as that's when I got wed!

2014 was also a good one as we had about 6 weeks with barely a drop of rain!

BlackberryandNettle · 17/05/2016 21:53

Ah it's not just my memory then - 2003 was fab. Finished uni that year and had a fantastic summer, happy times. 2014 was good too, not baking hot but lots of dry/sunny days. 2006 also not bad, springtime was hot and lasted until julyish it seemed

PrimalLass · 17/05/2016 22:00

2005
2005
2009
2013
2014

All good I think.

troubleinstore · 17/05/2016 22:00

YABU .... for even remembering the weather way back then

Zoomtothespoon · 17/05/2016 22:04

I'm pretty sure 2006 was a scorcher as well? 2007 was miserable and I was glad because I was in hospital having chemotherapy and didn't want anyone else enjoying summer

Designjunkie · 17/05/2016 23:11

2003 was officially the hottest recorded summer ever so everything else will pale in comparison apart from '76 which I believe came a close second. I remember it getting hot early April 2003 as I had just given birth and not relenting until september or October. It's so sad that we can all remember a summer from 13 years ago!!! Shows how rubbish they have been since.

PNGirl · 17/05/2016 23:26

2003 was a genuine crisis though. Thousands of people died in the heat and crops failed. I'm not sure that's something we want to repeat! I'd settle for low 20s and rain once a week to sort out the gardens.

Beepbopboop · 18/05/2016 01:00

2015 was an alright summer I got a tan.
It's the UK it would be weird if it was sunny all summer.

BeALert · 18/05/2016 01:05

I was England for 3 weeks last June/July and it was scorching... Meanwhile it was raining back home in New England. Very odd.

BeALert · 18/05/2016 01:06

We have 11-week summer holidays here and we probably get 5-10 days of rain in that time usually.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 18/05/2016 01:12

I hate the hot weather, so I am going through these posts thinking '2003 that was a shitter' and '2006 that was bloody grim.'

Luckily I live in Scotland now, where summer does not apply.

TendonQueen · 18/05/2016 01:26

I've tried and I can't remember anything about 2003. What was that summer's sporting event? I'll probably then remember where I might have spent some of it Blush

What about (going back in time) 1990? That I remember as a really hot summer. I have a memory of being on a train in unbearable heat and seeing newspaper headlines about Saddam invading Kuwait.
