I see so many posts with things like "when i'm doing my hobby" "DH spends 2 hours a week doing his hobby" "a friend from my hobby"

WHAT ARE ALL THESE HOBBIES?

I've never heard anyone say this in RL
"so what you doing tonight?"
"oh you know, i'm going to do my hobby"

It makes me all nosey and agitated trying to work out what these hobbies are

Someone once said that Golf was a practical joke that went too far.

After being DS2's caddy for two years I would have to agree. It is the most pointless and ridiculous thing to do.

idontlikealdi · 14/05/2016 23:32

I've changed my mind is it bloody role play?!

StealthPolarBear · 14/05/2016 23:33

No no again you just whack balls and run after them

Sparklingbrook · 14/05/2016 23:35

Golf has a massive stupid rule book too. Like you can't just kick the ball in the hole with your foot if you have had enough. And rake the sandpits after use.

RJnomore1 · 14/05/2016 23:36

If it's the husbands hobby it's ALways cycling and there's always another woman involved.

I can't imagine a hobby I would be less attracted to a bloke participating in than cycling. Lycra shorts and nerve damage...

I don't have a senior job, I work for NMW, but I am in a roller derby team, and consider this to be my hobby. Am I doing it all wrong? Should I pretend to be very importand and take up quilting? Grin

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 14/05/2016 23:37

Damn... Someone famous said something about golf being a way to spoil a good walk and now I can't remember who it was or exactly what it was!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 14/05/2016 23:37

Dh is doing his hobby tomorrow. It's quite an unusual hobby so if I was saying this on a thread I wouldn't mention what it was to try and preserve some hope of anonymity.

MartyrStewart · 14/05/2016 23:37

*important and

StealthPolarBear · 14/05/2016 23:38

Dh cycles...comes back looking like he's walked through a sandblaster :o if theres a woman out there willing to get within two feet of him like that she's welcome to him

MartyrStewart · 14/05/2016 23:38

It was T.S Eliot, I believe, Milk

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 14/05/2016 23:39

Ah...

"Golf is a good walk spoiled." Mark Twain (apparently).

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 14/05/2016 23:39

My "hobby" is cycling. and watching Netflix

LittleMissBossyBoots · 14/05/2016 23:39

I would say 'hobby' to describe what DH does with his spare time as it's easier than saying 'some sort of amateur radio electronics robotty teccie weird shit'.

Sparklingbrook · 14/05/2016 23:40

Naked hang gliding Simon?

paxillin · 14/05/2016 23:40

Probably all train spotting.

StealthPolarBear · 14/05/2016 23:41

Martyr there must be something that only you do in the country nay the world
for me it's trying to move the mouse on the screen using my mobile phone which I put down in about the same area. At least twice a week.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 14/05/2016 23:41

You're halfway there Sparkling

I'm the same OP and worra. I get so distracted wondering what the hobby or successful business is, that I can't think about the actual poing of the thread.
Also, because I know someone whose husband was gay cottaging under the guide of his 'hobby' cycling, I always imagine the 'busy training for the whole weekend' husband is actually having a different sort of fun, but don't want to bring the thread down, so I keep schtum with my suspicious mind.

Allalonenow · 14/05/2016 23:41

I always think that the mysterious hobby is swinging or art photography.

Until recently many golf clubs didn't allow women into the bar room, so a totally pointless hobby in my view.

ClarkeyCat · 14/05/2016 23:44

I love that OP started this thread.

In my head the hobby is always that live action role play thing.

NewLife4Me · 14/05/2016 23:49

I think some people don't say because you can tell a lot about people from the hobbies they do. They also might think they'd be judged, especially if it is something out of the character they wish to portray.

It's the psychological aspect to leisure and what we decide to do with our time outside work. It's usually something quite important to them as well, as they have to be motivated in some way to pursue it.

My hobbies are ancestry, playing my clarinet and sax, Social History, theatre,
That must sound so boring to some people. But I don't care as they are the things that motivate me in my leisure time.

acasualobserver · 14/05/2016 23:56

I agree that the vagueness must be to prevent being identified. Sometimes, though there follows a rather strange and pointless attempt to describe the hobby without naming it directly: "I have a hobby I do twice a week - think tennis but with a higher net and instead of a ball a weighted 'cone' of feathers."

MrsMook · 14/05/2016 23:57

It's brilliant when the role players are out for the bank holiday weekend and filling up ASDA in their armour and medieval gowns. Grin

paxillin · 14/05/2016 23:59

Birdwatching, photographing post boxes, train spotting, stamp collecting, dog shows, naturist club.

In reality, it is probably singing in a choir or yoga.
