I see so many posts with things like "when i'm doing my hobby" "DH spends 2 hours a week doing his hobby" "a friend from my hobby"

WHAT ARE ALL THESE HOBBIES?

I've never heard anyone say this in RL
"so what you doing tonight?"
"oh you know, i'm going to do my hobby"

It makes me all nosey and agitated trying to work out what these hobbies are

I reckon it's code for 'going to the pub'

OSETmum · 14/05/2016 23:05

I dunno about other people but for dh and DS its trials motorbike riding.

Noodledoodledoo · 14/05/2016 23:06

I can understand it if it is something a bit unique which would 'out' you and you want to remain in the closet so to speak.

For run of the mill hobby's like golf, gym, cycling etc I really don't get it!

Sparklingbrook · 14/05/2016 23:06

A relative is learning to fly a helicopter. That's a proper hobby. End result and everything.

Keeping a horse is a good one. Time consuming and expensive.

idontlikealdi · 14/05/2016 23:06

I'm fairly sure it will be mostly cycling. Hours and hours conveniently take up most of the weekend.

MAMILs.

Although I would just say DH had gone out on his bike.

Men's shed association Grin AKA the wank but

Tiddlywinks!
Yes how can running or line dancing possibly out you?? They're not niche!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 14/05/2016 23:09

Every time I read "his hobby" I imagine middle aged bloke dressed up as Gandalf Grin

manicinsomniac · 14/05/2016 23:09

I've never thought anything of it but now I've read the word hobby so much it sounds weird and annoying! Grin

My hobbies are jazz/tap/ballet/commercial/contemporary dance classes and amateur dramatics/musical theatre

silverpenny · 14/05/2016 23:10

sparking why not sign up for uber? Make a bit of cash and a new hobby!

SistersOfPercy · 14/05/2016 23:10

I always imagine golf or something.
DH and I share a hobby.
We do it everywhere, mostly in public and one of us wears pvc to do it Grin

Sparklingbrook · 14/05/2016 23:11

Grin silver. Good plan, and those passengers might even speak to me.

annandale · 14/05/2016 23:11

Most leisure pursuits are tiny little worlds - quite easy to be identified tbh. In my old hobby that I pursued from 19 -25 I probably knew a fair proportion of the UK population who spent time on it. I hadn't shagged many of them but I was fat unusual in that regard.

MorrisZapp · 14/05/2016 23:13

There are always hobby going husbands who do specific, unnameable, out worthy things that take up entire weekends.

Extra points for there being a WOMAN at the hobby.

WHATS THE FUCKING HOBBY

StealthPolarBear · 14/05/2016 23:14

Really Anna. So if your hobby is running golf or fishing that would be identifiable??

RaeSkywalker · 14/05/2016 23:16

DH's hobby is quite a niche sport which he plays at a high (amateur) level, it would potentially out me.

My hobby is the gym, which is common enough to get away with.

annandale · 14/05/2016 23:17

No, fair enough. Possibly if it were competitive punting, though (it isn't).

SharonSignsToCherryRed · 14/05/2016 23:21

My secret hobby is running the fan club for a deceased not famous but very highly regarded cult artist. It takes a lot of time and people are very surprised if they find out about it. I love every minute of it and get to be consulted on things like biographies and compilations of their music.

TheChippendenSpook · 14/05/2016 23:24

'Hobby' seems to be changing into 'activity'.

I have seen that a few times just lately. It winds me up too Grin

WorraLiberty · 14/05/2016 23:25

This has made me laugh so much

Spot on, OP! Grin Grin

It's the same when so many posters are so vague about the business they run from home.

I'll just assume they're busy sticking glitter and shit to photo frames Grin

TheChippendenSpook · 14/05/2016 23:26

worra Grin

Choughed · 14/05/2016 23:28

I think part of the reason why people are vague and use the word "hobby" is because people can be judgemental about the activity and it can derail the thread.

E.g. If someone is complaining that their partner spends too much time at the golf club, loads of people will comment that it's a pointless sport with stupid trousers, which isn't really helpful.

BIWI · 14/05/2016 23:28
Grin
StealthPolarBear · 14/05/2016 23:31

In fairness there are also a lot of people who (either themselves or depressingly their dhs) describe the jobs as very senior and imply they (dh) can pull strings at very senior levels. They always met the prime minister or had the president of China over for tea.
Not many people seem to do the vaguely important in their own field but pretty miniscule to anyone or directly involved sorts of jobs I've always done.

StealthPolarBear · 14/05/2016 23:31

But it is a pointless game and it does have stupid trousers. ..
