My little ones are 3, they are moving from their toddler bed to single.

Their nursery is a little young for them, it's gender neutral bears... It's cute, but not for children!

Not sure how long they are allowed to stay in a room together, but we only have 2 bedrooms, so it needs to work for a bit. Not sure what works for children aged 3-11 around that age, for both boy and girl! Help!

Literally anything. There doesn't have to be any difference because they are different genders. Whatever they're into. Also 'allowed'?

There is no law about children sharing! How would that work? Social services would have to take away your child if you couldn't afford a bigger house! My 6 year old twins (girl and boy) are and will be sharing for a long time to come. Their room is green and each has a picture above their bed that they like but there is no "theme" as such. I prefer keeping it simple so they can change the pictures etc as and when they like.

I don't think there is a law for how long different sexes can be in the same room (I don't believe in gender), but I suppose about 9 or so should be the cutoff date. When they enter puberty, they will need their own space.

When I was about 5 I shared a room with my brother ... no decoration there, except a curtain which we had painted ourselves. I believe there was trees on it.

Don't worry too much about it. Children can live just fine without any decorative elements.

There is no law on how long different sex siblings can share. I think you are thinking of council house points system where a tenant will get extra points towards rehousing if they have different sex children sharing after a certain age. It's not a law though.

As for decoration, Jungle with lions tigers and exotic flowers and birds? Seaside?

I think if you want it to last up until age 11ish you will probably have to go for plain walls in a neutral colour and add wall stickers and bedding to create a theme.

My friend has two that share and they have the white company red gingham check - the boy has a pirate cushion with red and blue and the girl has an butterfly rug with red and pink to " differentiate" but I don't even think that is absolutely necessary - it Looks lovely.

My first thought is jungle animals - you can get some pretty authentic giant stickers off the internet.

Otherwise, I would put one bed in one corner, paint favourite colour and get favourite stickers or wall paper for the 90 degree wall and put the other bed in the opposite corner to do the same.

We have 2 girls and 2 boys, luckily we can decorate butterflies in one room and tractors in the other but I could see it working in the same room without arguments and butterflies and tractors are themes that will last a very long time age wise.

Just some ideas

My twins had a stripy/animal pattern curtains from IKEA with matching bed spreads. The main fabric colours were red, yellow, green, blue so coordinating other items was easy. We had neutral walls with a nice picture above each bed and framed drawings and posters around the other walls.

These hot air balloon duvets are quite neutral and you could do bunting in different colours for each side of the room.

rollmeover I love that wallpaper, it's gorgeous 😍. Unfortunately I was on a tight budget doing DS's room so couldn't get it 😭

My 3yo boy girl twins have a strong sky blue painted room, then blue/green/white striped curtains. They have 2 duvet covers each which are bright and cheery and it's all quite fun and clashy. Giraffe rug on the floor, grey wardrobe and bully bookcase. Oh and those giant paper pompom things hanging over their beds. Dirt cheap and nice and fun. Also have an old cot mattress in the floor covered in cushions for reading stories. I don't like matchy matchy and this way if they like something it can slot in easily enough as there is no really theme. No pictures on their walls - am still looking for a few nice ones.

Yes you could do one theme which suits both but you don't have to, there are lovely ways to split the room either physically or visually

Why does there have to be a theme? I don't really get why kids (or adults!) have to have rooms where things all match.

Assuming they will each have 'their' territory designated by beds they can each choose a colour they like for the wall and a duvet set they like. Big picture frames can have suitable images swapped in and out as they grow.

My sister and I shared a double aspect bedroom so picked a pair of curtains each ☺️

If you own your own house, it's up to you.

I think primary colours would work really well, how about red and blue - gingham and personalise a corner for them each.

Completely not true that there's a law about genders sharing, whether you rent or own your home. If you live in council housing you can go on the list for a bigger house if you've got two or more of opposite genders sharing after age 10, but even then that only prioritises you for more space it doesn't guarantee it.

Me, DBro and DSis all shared a room into our teens. We had a yellow and blue room, with yellow stars on the blue walls and blue stars on the yellow walls, plus bunkbeds and another bed!
