To wish adults would stop drinking so much coffee.

The smell wafting along the room assaulting my nostrils is sickening. Especially coffee breath, which other people can smell even if you can't. WHY AND HOW DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS? I'm getting sick to the back teeth of having to consciously suppress gagging every day. Even just walking down the street, I can smell it. It reeks.

And then to add insult to the injury every cafe sells 500 different types of coffee, 300 teas and only 2 cold drink options. Angry So I can't even enjoy my plastic cup of tap water in peace without the smell of complex coffees mixing!

Am I the only adult that hates this stuff?

(Lighthearted sort of. I've had a bad day...)

Different types of coffees have been around for ages, it's just they are getting more popular now.
I used to love making coffees even more than drinking them somedays.

I love coffee, but don't understand the whole shopping walking, running with a cup of it. I love brewing a pot of coffee on the stove and heating milk and sitting and drinking it (with chocolate) slowly, or DRI ming a cup slowly in a cafe with a friend.

All this on the hoof stuff gives me indigestion and coffee slops on my clothes.

Tea breath is just as bad as coffee, and earl grey is the devils perfumed piss.

limitedperiodonly · 14/05/2016 19:05

What is the cult of busy?

Have you never noticed people bustling into meetings with a cup of coffee with their name on it?

FutureGadgetsLab · 14/05/2016 19:09

Thanks MrsDeVere

Limited I have seen that once or twice.

OP posts:
Winterbiscuit · 14/05/2016 19:10

Isn't coffee part of the 'cult of busy' though?

Yes it does seem to be. Especially espressos, which are hardly a drink at all, just concentrated coffee to propel someone to the next item on their "busy busy busy" schedule.

Winterbiscuit · 14/05/2016 19:11

Why would coffee have someone's name on? Confused

VestalVirgin · 14/05/2016 19:13

Coffee is a kind of cultural obsession. Like soccer. Or alcohol. Like smoking used to be but thankfully is not anymore.

There is no actual reason to consume it for most people (not counting university students who have to learn through the night, usually because they procrastinated too long - I know how that is), but everyone does, and in turn, everyone feels like they have to, thus the culture is continued.

I don't like coffee much and would much rather have a decent hot chocolate, but they always put too much sugar in that ... coffee drinkers are asked if they want sugar!

That people find it "childlike" if someone doesn't drink coffee only shows that it is an obsession on a level with alcohol - people subconsciously know that they are being irrational and thusly would prefer that everyone take part in their obsession so they don't have to face its irrationality.

I like the smell of coffee and even drink an espresso occasionally, but never got the "I need coffee" cult or the fact that places serve five sorts of coffee but only one hot chocolate, if you are lucky. (Allegedly, hot chocolate used to be the fashionable drink for some time ... I wish it still was)

A person who is comfortable with their own choices can accept that others make different choices. (Unless, that is, those choices affect others. The coffeemania does, though I personally find the soccermania and the alcoholmania worse)

hazeyjane · 14/05/2016 19:17

Why would coffee have someone's name on?

So that Brad's flat white doesn't get mixed up with Gemma's skinny latte

80sMum · 14/05/2016 19:17

I wish there were separate queues for people ordering coffee in cafes.
It takes soooo long to make one cup of coffee

Narp Now ^^this I am in complete agreement with!

NewYearNewToads · 14/05/2016 19:19

I have had six cups of coffee today.

That's all I have to say on the matter.

Winterbiscuit · 14/05/2016 19:20

Yes, well said.

A well-adjusted adult doesn't need to constantly prove they're grown up. They choose what they'd like to drink, not what other people think they should drink.

limitedperiodonly · 14/05/2016 19:23

If I've had a nice lunch, I like a single espresso at the end. God knows what my breath smells like after garlic, wine and coffee.

StealthPolarBear · 14/05/2016 19:25

I know what the pp meant by cult of busy. I mentioned it on another thread, the 80 hour weeks, the lunches at 4pm because you were too busy before, drinking incredibly strong coffee. ..
its just a cliché and people seem to like it

kali110 · 14/05/2016 19:27

VestalVirgin how about some people like the taste Confused
We don't need a lot of things, but have them because we like them.

StealthPolarBear · 14/05/2016 19:27

I love coffee and drink a lot. But I drink instant mostly, weak and black. Therfore I am shunned by real coffee drinkers :)

dworky · 14/05/2016 19:39

I absolutely loathe coffee & the smell of it makes me nauseous. I was most upset when bookshops allowed coffee to be sold on site! No more happy hours spent browsing.

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 14/05/2016 19:45

I like coffee, all different types and flavours but its the smell of alcohol I can't stand, I don't drink it either cos the smell alone makes me feel sick.

FutureGadgetsLab · 15/05/2016 08:44

smell of alcohol

I know what you mean about that, I don't like it either.

Nothing is as awful as coffee though, if only because of how widespread it is.

OP posts:
TheWordOfBagheera · 15/05/2016 09:30

Ah StealthPolarBear, you are my coffee drinking kindred spirit! What's worse (to the proper coffee drinkers) is that I also drink it decaf.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 15/05/2016 09:40

I think your best course of action is to force yourself to drink 6 cups of strong coffee daily for a couple of weeks. You will then be hooked and positively craving those coffee bean aromas.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Wink

NicknameUsed · 15/05/2016 09:44

I am a tea and coffee drinker. I drink them to stay hydrated because, unless I am hot and thirsty I never fancy a cold drink. I work in an air conditioned office and find the cups of tea I drink are refreshing and warming. Cold water just doesn't hit the spot unless I am outside in the sun and it is 30 degrees.

FutureGadgetsLab · 15/05/2016 09:57

Nickname that's the opposite of me, I never find hot drinks quench my thirst. I find drinking something hot a very weird sensation!

AverysillyoldHector · 15/05/2016 10:07

Ooo I love the smell of coffee. But can only assume that people who drink it have no idea what coffee breath smells like it's terrible. No comparison to tea breath.

Toddzoid · 15/05/2016 10:10

I love coffee. I've gone through stages of drinking six cups a day but I try to narrow it down to two nowadays. The smell of fresh coffee is delicious. I agree whole heartedly about coffee breath though, it just reminds me of teachers when they'd lean over to help you and it smelt all musty.
