Er, is it just me that immediatly thought of Diesel Dyke?

ChameleonCircuit · 13/05/2016 20:15

Is their eldest called Seven for all Mankind?

CalleighDoodle · 13/05/2016 20:21

I wanted lisle for my boy if he was a girl and sold it to my husband on it sounding like diesel!

Levi was the name of an apostle. But yes most definitely a boys name.

GeezAJammyPeece · 13/05/2016 20:24

We had a girl called Levi at school a few years back, she's probably late teens/early twenties now. Noticed another on the list of visiting primary 7's, who will be our new 1st years in August - don't know boy/girl.

Diesel for a girl does seem slightly strange to me, but hey, at least the mum spells it right! Wink
Pet peeve: people who give their kids weird spellings of a name Confused
I always find myself biting my tongue so as not to ask:
A. Were you too stupid to spell it right?
B. Did you think it made it/them sound fancy?
C. All of the above??

disclaimer: I don't mean where names as spelt differently due to cultural differences or nationality etc (Eoin/Ian , Rebecca/Rebekah) I am referring to the ones who actually proudly say "oh no it's spelt *!?&£# with five z's and a q - we wanted it to be unusual [smirk] "

People sometimes Hmm at DDs first name. I guess it is unusual & possibly more likely to be associated with a male (also regularly used as a surname)
TBH, I chose it because I liked it after reading it in a book. I spent 3 weeks in hospital abroad and did a lot of reading (there's only so much Smalltalk you can make with the 6 phrases you remember of the language!) The name belonged to a particularly badass strong & positive female character and after finding myself pregnant shortly after subsequent post-op issues, i recalled the name & it stuck.
Blush I guess I'm just as bad as Sohhfeee it's bloody Sophie! 's mum Blush

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 13/05/2016 20:33

Levi is a valid name for a boy - maybe a girl if you were desperate. Diesel is never a girl's name though Confused.

Not that I really like as a name for human males either TBH.

I have no amusing twin names to add unfortunately - only Jean and Jane. Not amusing but couldn't you choose something a bit different for one of the names? Something that doesn't only feature the same 4 letters.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 13/05/2016 20:34

like Diesel as a name - that should say.

GeezAJammyPeece · 13/05/2016 20:35

😂😂😂 at siblings Champagne and Tequila.
You'd think they'd have chosen classy names of equal classiness rather one upmarket and one not 😂😂😂

I came across a Chardonnay spelt Shardonie once Hmm

Meluzyna · 13/05/2016 20:38

Our twins are called Duracell and Ever-Ready (only kidding)

Me too! I'm a language teacher with an interest in language in general, but the parents who purposely give their kids weird spellings and then get huffy when you mis-pronounce it really get on my nerves.
We had a Tatiana in school last year who insisted that she should be called "Tashiarna" and this year I have a pupil called Lyllie. That's Lie-Lee, in case you were wondering. Like Kylie, I suppose.....

ArabellaRockerfella · 13/05/2016 20:38

My twins Alka and Seltzer bring me such relief!!

GeezAJammyPeece · 13/05/2016 20:41

SantasLittleMonkeyButler Jean and Jane? That's taking keeping the same initial to a whole other level... Know someone whose 3 daughters all start with A
(That one confuses me, especially where the kids are the same gender. How do you know whose mail is whose?? Confused )

mygrandchildrenrock · 13/05/2016 20:50

I taught a Deisel and until he turned up I had no idea if the child was a boy or girl. I had never heard of it being a name before!

GeezAJammyPeece · 13/05/2016 20:52

YY! Meluzyna ! It's not even the weird spelling itself that annoys me the most, its probably the huff when you get it 'wrong'. The mispronunciation of names gets me riled too (the whole Bucket vs. Bouquet thing)

Off topic but Re: Kylie
I did Body Shop parties many moons ago (late 90s/early 00s) and amongst a group of regular hostesses in a particularly dodgy part of town, it used to tickle me that Kylie lived in the row of flats above Cher. Grin

paintandbrush · 13/05/2016 20:52

Gucci and Prada has a ring to it. Wink

Sukiesu · 13/05/2016 20:55

There's a book called Freakonmics that has a chapter about how your name can affect your job prospects. Interesting reading. A funny book, worth a read.

RosieandJim89 · 13/05/2016 21:00

My FIL siblings are twins called Chris and Christine. Original!

flirtygirl · 13/05/2016 21:07

I love interesting names and prefer them to the usual josh and george and thomas and isla and eva and emily.

thank goodness people comes up with different names as they all become normal and popular over time anyway.

and if people put a CV with unusual names to the bottom of a pile that says more about them and not in a good way.

Whyamihere · 14/05/2016 07:42

Honestly, they were called Rage and Envy, she had 6 or 7 children all named after perfumes, they were the youngest two, I can't remember what the others were called but not as bad as those two, I met them about 6 years ago once at a party, hopefully the two girls have rebeled against their names and insist on being called something else.

wulfy1010 · 14/05/2016 08:15

I went to school with triplets called Jade, Amber and Krystal - Krystal was a boy, he shortened it to Krys whenever his mum wasn't around.

I shrug a bit at unusual names as I think people will only be judged as being unusual among their peers. When the current small children are applying for jobs they will be going up against people with the same kind of names.
I don't like Diesel at all though Grin

GeezAJammyPeece · 14/05/2016 09:21

Whilst many names can & should work for boy or girl, I think I'd probably Hmm at hearing a boy called Krystal reminds me of the song about The Man Called Sue

I know someone whose daughters are Amber & Ruby, both pretty names, and I have wondered if they were chosen simply because of this; or if there is some deeper meaning - they will be treasured as the precious jewels they are, and so will be named after gems.

Nanny0gg · 14/05/2016 09:48

I know a Diesel - a boy though not a girl.

DontDeadOpenInside · 14/05/2016 09:49

Levi is fine for a boy.. diesel is awful for anything that doesnt have 4 legs and I don't particularly like either for a girl.

I've heard of cousins that were the same age called blade (my phone just autocorrected that to balderdash 😂😂) and blaze. I've met a boy named se7en with the 7 in it Confused. When we registered one of the dcs the registrar told me she had one registered a 'smirnoff' and when I was in labour with my last dc the midwife was telling us how she was looking after a polish couple whilst she laboured and they were telling her that their soon to be born daughter was going to be named Chlamydia Confused obviously English wasn't their first language and they had heard it and thought it made a lovely girls name but had no idea what it meant so the midwife gave them some leaflets to try and get them to change their minds. No idea if they did though.

Boolovessulley · 14/05/2016 10:26

Diesel and Petrol maybe.

whois · 14/05/2016 10:30

My FIL siblings are twins called Chris and Christine. Original

Nooo it's like they couldn't be bothered to thing of a second name!

Fireandflames666 · 14/05/2016 11:16

The only things in life I've ever met called Diesel are cats or dogs, lol.
