AIBU in the 1970s

I grew up in the 1970s, the age of relaxed and free range parenting. If mumsnet had existed then, what do you think mums would have asked in AIBU?

I remember getting so burnt on my first holiday abroad early 80,s I had blisters on my shoulders which went scabby Sad

bearleftmonkeyright · 12/05/2016 21:31

Aibu to send DD aged 8 to fetch breast of lamb for tea up at the butchers on the tick?

bearleftmonkeyright · 12/05/2016 21:32

Aibu to think teabags will never catch on? Everyone makes tea in a pot and uses a strainer.

LittleHouseOnTheShelf · 12/05/2016 21:33

DH lets my DD ride in the back of his flimsy wooden trailer on the way back from the rubbish dump, it's high sided so she can't even see out and there is nothing for her to hold on to.
Surely it can't be safe? Why on earth would he let her do it?

MyLocal · 12/05/2016 21:33

To remember my teenage crush on Alan Alda from MASH.

x2boys · 12/05/2016 21:34

Aibu to take all the old carpets when we move houses from our old house so we can carpet the new house ?

DameMargaretofChalfont · 12/05/2016 21:34

AIBU to rub butter onto the nasty burn DD has just got on her hand. Silly girl, she should be more careful heating up the alphabetti spaghetti!!!

AIBU to walk to the shops in my nylon house coat and fluffy slippers? Mind you I will be wearing my floral headscarf - one does have certain standards!

AIBU to expect DD to get up and turn the TV channel over every time I want it doing. You'd have thought by now that someone would have invented a remote hand held zapper thing by now!!!

Hassled · 12/05/2016 21:34

AIBU to let my 6 year old DD go and buy DM's Players No 10 from the local shop? The shopkeeper's fine with it, but something tells me it's not quite right.

tibbawyrots · 12/05/2016 21:37

AIBU to remove the (boiler feeding) coal fire and replace it with a 2 bar electric heater AND replace the wall paper with wood effect pine panelling?

Cold? My parents house had bloody penguins.

BirthdayBetty · 12/05/2016 21:37

Aibu sit in front passenger seat with baby dd on my lap when we drive to Wales for our holiday? There is no room on the back seat as we also have 4 other dc's.

whitehandledkitchenknife · 12/05/2016 21:38

To wonder what is this Punk Rocker business? I just don't get it.

Civilservant · 12/05/2016 21:41

AIBU to leave home at 17, quit my nursing course and move 400 miles away to get a job in a tank depot, rent a bedsit and be nearer my 18yo bf, who joined the army last year? My mother says it's fine as long as I send her the same amount of cash that I give her now for my board, which should be possible if I don't eat much.

OhWotIsItThisTime · 12/05/2016 21:43

Aibu not to install any heating in dd's bedroom? She has ice on the inside of the window and is always ill in winter, but it'll save money.

Himalayanrock · 12/05/2016 21:44

AIBU to say

' you can't tell if it's a boy or a girl!!'

'Boom boom boom what is it with this pop music turn it down!'

' melon balls anyone?!'

' hot toddy for a cold ok for an eight year old?!'

Civilservant · 12/05/2016 21:44

Yanbu ohwotisitthistime: she can jusy put on another nylon jumper, crochet blanket or 6!

Rosebud05 · 12/05/2016 21:45

My dh wants a 'nice meal out' for his birthday.

AIBU to use my luncheon vouchers and take him to Woolies on Saturday lunchtime?

You get a good plate of nosh for a very reasonable price and can even have a 'three course meal' if you like.

GarlicShake · 12/05/2016 21:45

No, that's fine Wot. It'll strengthen her immune system. Let her get dressed in bed of a morning so she doesn't get too cold.

Civilservant · 12/05/2016 21:48

cleaty YABU for stealth boasting about your posh forrin holidays!

Rosebud05 · 12/05/2016 21:50

My6 year old dd has constant ear and throat infections. I make sure that she wears 3 polo neck jumpers at a time and, even though we don't have any heating, the glow from my cigarettes must spread a bit of warmth.

AIBU to take the GP up on the offer of powered antibiotics that I can just mix up at home whenever she has an ear ache rather than bothering to take her to the doctor? Taking antibiotics every day must do you some good, surely?

Civilservant · 12/05/2016 21:52

rosebud, if that doesn't work try one of those 1 litre bottles of Calpol.

LittlehumHams · 12/05/2016 21:53

YABU regarding the tea bags. Don't you know that you can dry them out near the fire and re-use them several times?

Rosebud05 · 12/05/2016 21:54

Thanks, civil. I've dosed her up on Night Nurse and Piriton (they need their sleep when they're poorly, don't they?) and if that doesn't work I'll crack open the Calpol.

JadziaSnax · 12/05/2016 21:54

AIBU to take DD(7) everywhere on the back of my bike? She can wear my spare crash helmet and hold onto my coat. this is a true story, thanks Mum. I loved it.

MrsBartlet · 12/05/2016 21:55

AIBU to get those 7 year olds who dare to turn up late for school up in front of the class and whack them on their outstretched hands with a leather belt?

GarlicShake · 12/05/2016 21:58

YANBU, MrsB. Children need to learn to obey.
