AIBU in the 1970s

I grew up in the 1970s, the age of relaxed and free range parenting. If mumsnet had existed then, what do you think mums would have asked in AIBU?

AIBU? My daughter is complaining of an itchy bum. She says loads of white moving bits in her poo. I've just walloped a load of Astral Cream on. Job done!

x2boys · 12/05/2016 21:03

Absolutely not Buttered I have often thought of applying for Jim, ll fixit for the dc .

GarlicShake · 12/05/2016 21:04

God, phleb, that shouldn't have made me laugh! Must be the way you tell it.

The woman must be fond of a large member, x2. You know what they say [giggle]

x2boys · 12/05/2016 21:05

Nudge nudge Garlic.

My 8 year old DTs can't swim. I've only taken them swimming a couple of times as I'm not able to myself.

AIBU to think that I should drop them at 'Chums Club' on a Saturday morning while I do the shopping so that they can have a good 3 hours of unsupervised splashing round in a 25m pool. There is a lifeguard, who looks like a mature 14 year old.

NancyJoan · 12/05/2016 21:07

My DD has seen a fancy pullover in the Littlewoods book that she would like for her birthday. Would I BU to knit her one just like it is some nice acrylic two-ply?

GarlicShake · 12/05/2016 21:09

YANBU, Rosebud. My dad taught me to swim by throwing me in the deep end, aged 4. As he said afterwards, I bloody well had to learn then!

AIBU to let my dc play in the woods up the road all day. One of the neighbours says her child was flashed there last week, but that never did anyone any harm did it?

While the kids are out I can finish running up that delightful orange dress for dd1 and put the spotted dick on to boil for dinner. Then I can watch Pebble Mill at One and polish the front door step.

If the dc come in hungry at lunchtime I thought dd1 could cook some Findus crispy pancakes for them all. Then I'll send her up the shops with a list and not enough money. She's old enough now, surely? She's 8.

If any of my siblings read this, they'll know it's me! I'm dd1. Actually most of my childhood was very happy. It was just very different to now.

We're having friends over for drinks and nibbles at the weekend. Their daughter is 12. I'm wondering whether to get some sweet sherry in for her or do you think martini and lemonade would be more suitable?

NancyJoan · 12/05/2016 21:12

AIBU to have huge crush on John Walton? I often image myself in long floral dresses, having to interrupt his work in the timber shed while the family are at church.

exWifebeginsat40 · 12/05/2016 21:13

I had a baby 10 days ago. AIBU to expect my doctor to prescribe my slimming pills again? they make me a bit jittery but a few martinis calm me down and i have my figure to think of. i drink loads of wine in the evening as i need my sleep and the baby disturbs me otherwise.

also, its ok to turn a puked-upon pillow over in the middle of the night when a child is ill, isn't it? i dont want to fall down the stairs hammered when i go to get a sick bowl.

x2boys · 12/05/2016 21:13

I,m thinking of getting a nice shagpile carpet for the front room what does everyone think ?

GarlicShake · 12/05/2016 21:15

AIBU or the other parents? DD1 tells me there are now THREE children in her class (age 8/9) who have no shoes at all. Two of them used to wear their father's old shoes, holes & all, with thick socks inside them and plastic bags when it was wet. Now even those are unusable, their mothers have had to send them without shoes, and a shoeless girl has joined the class.

I suggested clubbing together to get the kids a pair each. I know we're all scrimping every which way, but our children are at least shod and clothed adequately. They wouldn't hear of it, so then I said we should offer our kids' cast-offs. No, they'll be needing them for their younger DC - true! Everything gets passed down in my house.

But the other mums are offended by these children even being at the school. I don't think it's fair to blame them for their parents' poverty. WWYD?

cleaty · 12/05/2016 21:15

x2boys, very posh. My adult DS who lives in London, keeps giggling whenever I say I would love a shagpile carpet. I have no idea why.

Mine are all true stories, too :) The majority of the posts read true!

My DC want condensed milk sandwiches in their school lunch boxes, what would be the best way to transport the milk?

cleaty · 12/05/2016 21:19

I do remember divorce being talked about in hushed tones. There was a LOT of stigma.

My DS has a vegetarian gf. They came round for their tea and gave then chicken. My DS was unhappy and his GF did not eat her chicken. AIBU not to invite her for tea again when she is so fussy?

whitehandledkitchenknife · 12/05/2016 21:22

Boney - condensed milk is too much hassle. Try sugar sandwiches instead. They taste just as sweet.

AIBU to think the dentist is to blame for my DCs poor teeth? After all I follow the advice and give them an apple every night or sometimes they brush their teeth.

AiBU to watch Love Thy Neighbour? I mean I love all that Honky and Sambo banter.

iklboo · 12/05/2016 21:24

Oh that's a point. I haven't got sun cream. Surely cooking oil will do the job? It's practically the same thing as that Ambre Solaire stuff anyway.

x2boys · 12/05/2016 21:24

She seems very fussy cleaty and it can't be good for you nor eating meat , I m going to get a new bathroom suite I thought avacado green ?

cleaty · 12/05/2016 21:26

Suncream is just for foreign holidays abroad. Nobody normal uses it in Britain.
