What's the best compliment you've ever received?

My personal favourite ever has been "You've got a nice nose. Like Boris Becker".

A couple spring to mind, ds1 was making me a card for Mother's Day and he had had to write three reasons why he loved me, he wrote because my mama is weird, clever and fun. I treasure that one. Smile

And one from my eldest brother, I'd just taken custody of my eldest dd and it had been a hellish few months I had no idea why I was doing and it was generally crazy, my nephew had just been born and wouldn't stop crying so I opened my door one morning to my brother, sil and baby, my brother immediately said something like thank goodness you're in you'll know what to do and handed me the baby. I still get a lovely fuzzy feeling when I remember that even at my worst when I was doubting everything it was me my big brother ran to for help.

Standing in long,slow-moving queue in shop, all of us exchanging weary smiles and rolling eyes. As the man in front of me finally got served , he turned to me as he left and murmured "You should market that enigmatic smile...."

Onlyonce · 12/05/2016 23:13

From my brother. I sent him a picture of my DD just after she was born. He replied 'shes beautiful, just like her mum'

ChimpyChops · 12/05/2016 23:13

Lovely thread!

About 7 years ago I got onto a bus with my 2 year old, turns out it was the wrong bus and our quick 15 minute bus ride was about to turn into 45 minutes which I realised too late to get off. He was tired and whingy so I got him out of his buggy and cuddled up to him, tried to stop him moaning and shouting, let him fall asleep on me, the usual. When we finally got off the bus, a lady who had been sat behind us tapped me on the shoulder and said 'I think that little boy should feel very lucky he has such a wonderful mummy'. I cried.

Cubtrouble · 12/05/2016 23:16

If I wear a dress my son says "ooh mummy you look nice, are you going dancing?"

I do not dance. I rarely go out at night, this could be a daytime dress and he always says it. If I bother to wear makeup he asks to see my eyes up close and says I am pretty.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 12/05/2016 23:26

DSis once wrote in my birthday card something like "Keep up your wicked ways!". I was feeling a bit dull and blah at the time, so was quite chuffed at being thought of that way!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/05/2016 23:30

"You look like the female member of Suede"

When I was a pale slim 20 year old. I bloody love Suede! Grin

WorraLiberty · 12/05/2016 23:31

Random drunk man walking past my school crossing.

"You look too young to be a lollipop lady luv. Wotsa matta wiv ya"?

Confused Grin

Lillygolightly · 13/05/2016 00:40

My sis and I having a conversation about the awesomeness of the TV series the good wife. I said you know I really adore and admire the character of Alicia I would love to be like her and my turned and said to me but you are like her!

Made me cry.

minnymoobear · 13/05/2016 00:45

That I'm the most positive person they've ever met :)

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 13/05/2016 01:16

when I saw a class mate in town. The conversation went like this.
Me Hiya..............
Her I'm sorry, but I don't know you.
Me. You do. It's Ilive. We went to school together.
Her. Ilive. OMG. I never would have known you in a billion, let alone million years. I'm not saying you were ugly in school, but lets just say. Youve matured very very well.
Good to know I was the ugly duckling. That blossomed into the beautiful swan.

Lemond1fficult · 13/05/2016 01:18

My best friend was moving overseas. In her speech at her farewell dinner, she said that I taught her to make an effort with everyone, and that I always make people feel like the most interesting person in the room. Blarted for England, I did.

Sukiesu · 13/05/2016 01:21

My ex-boyfriends mum said that my smile was like the sun coming out. I still remember her saying it nearly 50 years later 😆

Tobebythesea · 13/05/2016 05:04

I've got light red hair and had just been to the hairdressers where they had curled my hair. I heard a guy on the tube say to his friend that I looked like a Pre-Raphaelite. I loved it!

DelphiBlue · 13/05/2016 05:05

I had a conversation with DP recently about what we'd change if we could go back in time. He said he'd make sure I had a better childhood and adolescence, even if it meant I ended up with some fancy rich bloke and not him. That made me sob.

From DS - oh mummy look at your lovely squidgy bum in your batman pants Grin

Bubbinsmakesthree · 13/05/2016 05:23

I was once reading a paper on the train and when I was folding it at my stop I realised someone had tucked a note in between the pages that said 'I think you are beautiful', with a phone number. I didn't see who left it but obviously I imagine it was some weirdo dashing gentleman Grin. If I had been single I wonder if I would have phoned?

PlumPurple · 13/05/2016 06:08

My son tells me all the time that I am so beautiful. I'm the only female in the house of 3 boys and they always make me few so special and gorgeous 😍

Fooshufflewickbannanapants · 13/05/2016 06:30

Watching a futuristic prison film with dh (only this week!) and main character has a stand off with vicious dogs, dh turns to me and says 'I'd get my face chewed off by some dogs for you'. he's such a romantic!

LobsterQuadrille · 13/05/2016 07:18

"I ask you what you think about things because you always seem to be right." - my DD who is 18 .... which surprised me.

"You're not unattractive for a woman your age" - my brother, who NEVER compliments anyone so I was actually touched by this, even though it's backhanded.

Another one who shed a tear at Fenella.

Wishfulmakeupping · 13/05/2016 07:29

I've told this before in here but will tell again as it was a turning point for me.
I was waiting for my on-off boyfriend outside a restaurant I thought maybe he'd stood me up (as he'd done a few times before). A little boy of about 5 walked past with his mum started tugging at her and whispered something into her ear- she giggled and said her son had asked if I was a real life Disney Princess. As someone who has already considered themselves not the most attractive it was huge that this little boy could think this.
After that when my on-off knobhead did eventually turn up and started messing me around again I thought enough and walked out- there and then.
I really think that little boy's word made the difference that day- weird how someone else sees can have such an effect on how you feel.

SallyVating · 13/05/2016 07:37

You've got an arse that was made to be slapped Hmm

Fibbertigibbet · 13/05/2016 07:46

Oooh I have a few!

My DH once said when we started dating that I smelled like a favourite armchair. Grin

I have a big, guffawing laugh, and I've had a few people say it's annoying for being so loud and sudden, but recently someone came up to me and told me that she loves my laugh because I sound so genuinely happy, and it shows that I really find things funny!

A few weeks ago someone complimented my outfit and I said thank you, and someone overhearing the conversation said she hoped that one day she would feel confident enough about herself to just say thank you and accept compliments graciously like me. It made me realise how far I'd come in self-love and made me feel all warm inside!

Sallystyle · 13/05/2016 07:59

On meeting my ex husband's widow's best friend

'You are actually really pleasant!' With a shocked face Hmm

From my brother who I rarely see

'You have turned into a beautiful woman'

I think the compliment that most touched me was from a patient. It wasn't an actual compliment as such but she told me she would miss me when she went home and would never forget me. She also asked for me before any medical treatment so I could hold her hand. That meant a lot to me.

TwllBach · 13/05/2016 08:01

Me and DP brought our first DC home on Tuesday afternoon. I'm trying really hard, as is DP, and I'm breastfeeding. DC fed about eleventy billion times yesterday, one after the other, and I went for a nap at 7.30 because I knew it would be a long night.

Sure enough, DP brought a hungry DC up to me about 45 minutes later and he thought I was still asleep as I had my eyes closed. I could hear him whispering to DC "you've got a good mummy you know. She's a very good mummy to you."

TobleroneBoo · 13/05/2016 08:08

I had had a facial and nobody noticed ( not that I expected them to) except for my lovely grandad who told me my skin was glowing and said the same thing everytime I saw him for a few weeks and would put the back of his hand to my cheek to feel how soft my skin was Grin love him!
