And try and get an item removed from my medical records?

I can't go into any detail for fear of outing myself, but I saw my midwife today and she brought up an item on my records.

From many MONTHS ago which means that she must have been nosy and been rifling through my medical history in order to come across it

I was not aware that this information had been shared, I would not have given consent for it, it has no relevance to my health, was dealt with long ago and can only possibly be used to cause me distress, not improve my care in any way, shape or form.

I am absolutely furious that she has been rifled through my history like this, who else is this information open to?!?!
Any midwife, nurse, doctor, receptionist etc could read about it.

I haven't been able to relax all day about it, I am so upset and distressed.

I feel like not seeing my midwife ever again. Or the doctors.

Feel violated actually.

I'm not entirely sure if yabu or not!. If the information has relevance to your physical or mental health then I think it DOES have a place on your medical record. It really depends what it is but either way if you don't want to talk about it then that should be enough.

A Health Professional has got to have a valid reason for reading through your medical history and a MW has a valid reason.

The issue is that you want it removing from your records, so you need to focus on that and go down the necessary route.

Is your midwife based at your doctor's surgery?

Did she explain why she brought it up? Does it have any relevance at all to your current physical/mental health?

It was obviously a big enough deal to see a hcp about in the first place. It's on your notes... so what really? They're only seen by professionals anyway.

If it makes you feel any better I must look like a total freak from my medical records - but this is one of the reasons people don't make friends with their doctors I think !

It has relevance to my mental health in that it has caused me an immense amount of distress and anxiety and worry at a time that I don't need.

She is based at the surgery, but did she really need to go back months and months and months???

It is 'factually correct' but it is not relevant, it cannot be used to 'better' my care in any way.

Am absolutely livid.

If it's not removed as soon as the baby is out I will be withdrawing from surgery and will not be using the nhs again.
It's such sensitive information, it's only purpose can be to cause anxiety and upset.

Your mental health is your health.

I'd guess it may have relevance to your pregnancy as well as MH issues may be brought in by the extra stress/weird hormones/inability to take certain medications etc.

I think it is important that HCPs do have access to your full history...

Months ago isn't very long and your mental health is extremely relevant when you're going to become a mum.

Mh issues are relevant info for midwives imho.

The item is not a medical problem.

It was dealt with by a non nhs organisation, a long time ago.

It's not my first baby and the item isn't about my mental health.
It is not related to anything to do with my health.

But knowing it is on my records for all to see is affecting my mental health now.

I feel violated and like I can't trust any organisation anymore.

You cannot take something off your medical records. They wouldn't be a medical record then.

You can't just get things removed, as a pp said it'll have a line through it.

But it isn't medical!
Why is it on there?!?!?!

Any healthcare professional that is involved directly in your care has a duty to review all of the notes ..its routine to do so.

If she was looking at your screen she probably wasn't "rifling through"- the major themes come up in different panels on the screen, not scrolling in chronological order necessarily.

I think YABU, sorry. It was obviously a big enough deal then that another agency (I assume police or social services) made contact. And it's clearly still a big enough deal that you're having such a strong reaction. For all those reasons, for your mental health and for your baby it sounds therefore like the professionals caring for you SHOULD be aware of it.

Tbh though there's so many things about this we don't know it's impossible to say for sure.

I'm a bit confused how this information has made its way onto your records.

Did you mention it at any medical appointments or dud the third party agency write to your GP?

If this is that you made a disclosure to the dr In order to be signposted to relevant non nhs help, I under your frustrations. Similar situation here. I am unsure but imagine the record of my visit is on my notes and understand why it is. But you can ask for it to be removed.
