We're a family of three. Two adults and our ds who's coming up to a year old.
I'm trying to work out what cuts we can make with weekly shopping so it's cheaper!

So how much per week do you spend and how many people in your household?

2 adults 4 kids at home (1 visits from uni often) about 130 basic shop (no expensive brands) Inc toiletteries and school packed lunch x 4 kids (Asda). Top ups in week 20. We need to cut back. The better the food we cook the more ££. Also we have a coeliac which means can't buy cheap stock cubes, pasta etc

Fratelli · 09/05/2016 21:03

I have nothing of value to add, I'm just waiting for a poster to come on and say they spend a tenner per week for a family of 5 Grin

BonerSibary · 09/05/2016 21:06

When my family was the same size as yours, about £65 a week on food. Not cleaning stuff, nappies etc. That was a couple of years back, so would be above £70 I reckon now. Didn't eat expensive things like fillet steak, but we had meat and fish and a lot of fresh fruit and veg. We also liked to take things like salads and stir fries for work lunches rather than sandwiches, so that made it a bit more expensive. And I didn't mind doing things like spunking £6 on 3 punnets of berries because the baby loved them. We also had a bit of home grown produce around that time, so add maybe another fiver a week if we hadn't had that.

You'd save by changing supermarket. I've always found the quality in the co-op to be very good, but you do pay for it. The bananas at Aldi are like half the price and while they're not as good, they're more than 50% of the quality of co-op iyswim. Tesco are very expensive for what they are as well, especially if yours doesn't do good reductions (ours is shit). I try only to shop there about once a month now and do mainly Aldi and market inbetween. Saves a good £15 a week.

SpaceCadet4000 · 09/05/2016 21:08

£40 for a normal week, alternates between Lidl and Sainsbury's/Asda depending on what I can get in Lidl first.

Just myself and DH. We cook everything from scratch, lots of veg and pulses. Spend about 2 hours every Sunday afternoon prepping stuff for the week ahead which stops my straying into the Waitrose opposite our house to buy ready made pizzas.

Can go up to about £60 if we're both really busy at work and in desperate need of a break from housework.

5minutestobed · 09/05/2016 21:10

£70 roughly a week, I aim for £50 for the main online shop and a couple of top up shops. That's for two adults, a 3year old and two cats. (cats stuff is about £10 a week)

BarbaraofSeville · 09/05/2016 21:11

Good point from flirtygirl about never paying full price for brands. There is always an offer somewhere on a lot of things and it doesn't take much space to keep a stock in when you see an offer so you don't run out when the offer isn't on.

It helps to be flexible about which brand you buy too. For example we just get whatever decent toilet roll is on the best offer, rather than always getting Andrew etc.

MargaretCavendish · 09/05/2016 21:11

About £50-60 per week for two adults (including toiletries, cat food and litter, lunch for me but not for DH). We really noticed how much we saved when we started doing one big (weekly) online shop, rather than picking up things each day. Also, we don't eat meat or fish, and that also seems to make a big difference; I sometimes cook it for guests, and I'm always astonished at how expensive it is.

BG2015 · 09/05/2016 21:15

2 adults and 2 teenagers, we shop at Aldi and spend £50 a week with a £10-15 top up shop at Morrisons.

We cook everything from scratch and do a weekly food plan - this helps to focus our buying.

We don't buy sugary cereal, ready prepared veg, or things like cheese strings as these are expensive.

BG2015 · 09/05/2016 21:16

This doesn't include household stuff, toilet rolls etc as we buy that from Home Bargains once a month for about £10 or so

dollylucy · 09/05/2016 21:20

Blimey
I spend about £150, there's only me and ds!

AnotherUsernameBitesTheDust · 09/05/2016 21:25

There's 7 of us, 2 adults, 2 teenagers, 3 younger kids. I spend between £100-£120 a week on our food shop.

I meal plan for the week, and just buy what ingredients I need for them, plus breakfasts and lunches. And cat food. I do feed the cat as well. Grin

MrPoppersPenguins · 09/05/2016 21:27

We are 2 adults, 1 pre-schooler and 3 cats. We spend on average £60 in aldi and possibly £10-15 top up wherever we are passing. Including cat food/cleaning products/toiletries etc. We saved at least £40 a week by swapping Tesco for Aldi- we were amazed and like most of their own-brand foods. We have one big meal like pasta bake/casserole which we will have leftovers a 2nd night and one night a week we tend to have a "cheap night" and have beans/poached eggs on toast for example. I often take leftovers for lunch at work the next day.

ProseccoPoppy · 09/05/2016 21:31

Averages at about £75 a week. Two adults and a (Blw) baby. Shop in Aldi for all the basics and do two top up shops a month at Waitrose to stock up on the naice bits Aldi doesn't sell (puy lentils, whole meal cous cous, posh sorbet etc).

Ihatechoosingnames · 09/05/2016 21:32

2 adults, 2yo DS and 6 month old DD. Both in nappies, youngest has formula too. Spend about £90pw. Genuinely cannot get it any lower, I have definitely tried!

ProseccoPoppy · 09/05/2016 21:32

The £75 pw factors in the waitrose bits so £300 month all in.

TheCrumpettyTree · 09/05/2016 21:34

About £70 a week for me, dh and our small DC.

Meal plan and do online delivery. Then you can't buy extra stuff you don't need. I hate meal planning but it means saving money.

TheCrumpettyTree · 09/05/2016 21:35

Two small DC I meant.

Smartiepants79 · 09/05/2016 21:35

About £70 a week.
2 adults 2 young children and a cat.
Most of it from aldi (£50) top ups from one of the other big 4 supermarkets.
More if my DH is shopping!

BeauGlacons · 09/05/2016 21:40

Me, DH and 18 year old DD, about £120-£130pw. That includes breakfast and dinner, perhaps two or three packed lunches. Probably also includes 8 Stellas and a bottle of wine, cat food, all cleaning stuff and all toiletries. If DS is home closer to £200.

We have what we want but I don't think we are outrageously expensive. though tonight was a bit lazy. But regular dinners are: carbonara and salad, fish cakes, chips and peas; barbecue bits and salad, roast chicken, stir fry with salmon fillets; etc.

Oly5 · 09/05/2016 21:43

£150 per week. Two adults and two kids aged 4 & 2. Includes nappies, wine and cleaning stuff.
It's loads but we don't need to be on a budget at the mo and I love Waitrose

JustMarriedBecca · 09/05/2016 21:44

Similar ages to you. Our bill is £50-80 a week from Tesco. I know I could get it cheaper at Lidl but we live in central London and delivery is cheap and quick and I work ridiculous hours and don't want to spend my weekend doing a food shop. When I was on maternity leave we spent £50ish at Lidl and the market for fresh fruit and vegetables.
Time is more previous now

NickyEds · 09/05/2016 21:45

We have me, dp ,ds (2.5 years)and dd (10 months)
£70-80 Aldi
£15-20 top ups for bread, milk and eggs at local shop
Then maybe a big £60 per month asda delivery for nappies and butchers for some nice meat...
So it probably averages out at £100-120 per week, that's for cleaning stuff, nappies etc. I cook from scratch but we seem to get through loads of food! I also spend about £8 a week on flowers included in that, aldi do nice ones.

insideout · 09/05/2016 21:45

We spend around £75 normally for me , dh, dd (9) ds (2) , 2 cats ,2 dogs, 1 rabbit and 1 gerbil. I cook almost every meal from scratch. Typically from lidl with top ups from morrisons ( baby formula/ lactose free milk). I anticipate we will be adding an extra £10-15 on that when my dc3 is born next month. The only way I cope is meal planning!

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 09/05/2016 21:47

About £200 per week for 2 adults, 2 DC and 1 baby. It includes wine and a few beers for DH and nappies/wipes etc. Also cleaning stuff. Everything in fact.

Our food bill goes down in summer as we grow some stuff ourselves.

We have four shops per week delivered, all around £50 each, so fresh stuff is always topped up.

sonlypuppyfat · 09/05/2016 21:50

I'm a food hoarder I'm not happy unless every cupboard fridge and freezer are full
