to ask what you spend on food per week

We're a family of three. Two adults and our ds who's coming up to a year old.
I'm trying to work out what cuts we can make with weekly shopping so it's cheaper!

So how much per week do you spend and how many people in your household?

I spend approx £70 a week, sometimes much less - all organic (apart from the odd impossible to finds) and have it delivered from Asda with their yearly delivery pass. Two adults, and very often visitors, plus our three boys every day. I make everything from scratch and but organic chicken thighs/legs which are cheaper than organic breast. Sorry I should say I don't make things like the Yeo valley yogurt from scratch but dinners etc I do. Asda spaghetti is 20p! The savers stuff can be hit and miss but I followed money saving expert's advice where they say you should substitute a normal brand for a saver one every shop and see what you can do and what is a deal breaker. Certainly for me, the spaghetti is no different than a sainsburys £2 pack. Asda app is very easy to use, too! To compare Asda organic with that of waitrose, when you're talking something like a bag of carrots - is laughable, your shopping budget would double. Sorry I've become a bit of an Asda evangelist. I don't like going in there but I don't have to, thanks to the readily available slots.

LagunaBubbles · 09/05/2016 20:22

Me, DH and our 3 DSs who are aged 23, 14, and 8, spend about £150 on a Friday and the whatever I need through the week, that could be another £30. That's all food, household products, cleaning products and toiletries.

Pengweng · 09/05/2016 20:25

Normally a big shop once a month of £100 after payday which includes cleaning products, loo roll, toiltries and meat etc and then £50 a week. Two adults and two nearly four year olds.

BrandNewAndImproved · 09/05/2016 20:25

I don't do a weekly big shop.

Sometimes I go to aldis and put everything I want in the trolly Inc alcohol and it will be 50/60/70 pounds. Other weeks I pick up bread/milk/fruit in tesco on the way home and spend between ten and twenty.

Your shopping bill is like the ridiculous shopping bills on TV programmes where they go in and switch the brands. I eat steak, prawns, joints of beef ect loads of naice veg and it still won't be over 70.

AppleSetsSail · 09/05/2016 20:28

My Ocado order for 4 people is normally about 130-150. My husband goes to the store about once weekly which I hate because it upsets the order of my fridge and that brings it to about 180.

That doesn't include alcohol or dinner parties.

limitedperiodonly · 09/05/2016 20:29

braving the reduced section at Tesco. I managed 4 Pizza Express pizzas for 45p each instead of £4.50 each. Best bag to date)

That's me too SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses I got a large Four Seasons from Waitrose last week that served two but it was £1.95 so you beat me. If you have the time, it's brilliant isn't it?

Tonight is two reduced Taste The Difference rump steaks and reduced bearnaise sauce from Sainsbury's, salad, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and chips.

bringbacksideburns · 09/05/2016 20:30

Where do you do the majority of your shop?

I saved £30 - 40 per week switching from Tesco to Aldi. I get all the cat food from Tesco though, if they liked the Aldi cat food I'd save money on that too.

I do have a rough idea of what I'm going to cook in the week and menu plan.

ThinkPinkStink · 09/05/2016 20:30

£70-£100 pw two adults (including preggo me). We are slightly careful, but not overly. If we spend £100 one week (in Ocado) we then try to rotate to ASDA delivery for a week to even it out.

AIBVVVU · 09/05/2016 20:31

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses Sorry to derail but LOVE your user name!

bringbacksideburns · 09/05/2016 20:32

Forgot to say 2 teens 2 Adults - average £75-85 pw

Statelychangers · 09/05/2016 20:33

Around £200 - there's 4 of us.

weegiemum · 09/05/2016 20:34

About £120 for 2 adults and 3 teenagers, includes packed lunch supplies. Sometimes Asda, sometimes Tesco.

No cleaning supplies (or minimal) as our cleaner brings her own.

Less when dh and dd1 aren't with me as fewer extras in the trolley!

CalleighDoodle · 09/05/2016 20:37

£60 pw for a family of 2 adults and 2 young children.

blinkyoullmissit · 09/05/2016 20:38

Thankyou for everyone's who's replied! I just wanted to compare what we're spending and my god it seems a lot!
Already taking a step towards being better but

  1. doing a meal plan for each day of the week - we tend to just go day by day but then pick out really expensive things as it doesn't seem like a lot at the time

  2. going to go have a look in aldi! We have two coops literally 30 seconds walk down the road from us so it's super easy to just pop in there and grab stuff. Was beginning to get suspicious of their prices when a loaf of bread was £3

Muskateersmummy · 09/05/2016 20:40

I have just switched from waitrose to asda and have saved about £25 a week. We now spend about £75 for two adults and one child

goldensquirrel · 09/05/2016 20:40

We spend about £130 a week that's for 2 adults, 2 children (5 and 9 years old). I spend about £80 in Waitrose but after 4 days all the fresh stuff has gone so my DH will get top ups from Sainsburys Local. Equally, we'll usually buy picnic stuff after swimming on Sunday from Waitrose but that's always about £25. This includes everything though such as a bottle of wine and we rarely go out in the evening anymore for a drink- perhaps twice a year as a couple. DH will go for drinks with work colleagues sometimes and it doesn't include that.

Topseyt · 09/05/2016 20:41

Around £100 per week for two adults and two teenagers, and sometimes 20 year old DD1 when home in uni holidays.

blinkyoullmissit · 09/05/2016 20:42

I'm feeling a little excited (how sad). Going to challenge myself to not spend over £70 for a week food shopping.
It's like one of those food swap shows a PP mentioned Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 09/05/2016 20:48

Do you currently use up everything you buy or are things wasted? Not wasting things will be something to keep an eye on if you switch from daily Co-op trips to less frequent visits to another supermarket.

BieneBiene · 09/05/2016 20:48

About £75 a week for two adults, 3 cats and a dog from Ocado. We could spend less but choose not to. That includes pet food, cleaning supplies and a few toiletries. It doesn't include any alcohol.

Muskateersmummy · 09/05/2016 20:51

I agree with Barbara. We were very guilty of the popping in to grab a couple of bits and wasting a fortune. We meal plan, and I only buy what's needed for the plan

flirtygirl · 09/05/2016 20:58

45-65 pw across lidls, morrisons, farmfoods and iceland. Only get cereal on offer and value juice cartons from tesco and queue up at 7 if im around for cut price bakery and veg. Last week got £21 of items reduced to £3.20 so froze doughnuts, cookies and bread.

Have a rule of never buy brand items that i like, heinz ketchup and bajedbeans, all cereal and hellmans mayo etc full price. Theres always an offer somewhere or i do without. I did have to go without cereal last week (silly as end up eating rubbish) as ran out of almond milk which is pricy but supermarket.co.uk showed waitrose had it on offer so i stocked up on 20, that alone saved me £20 over the next month.

TeaAndBisquits · 09/05/2016 20:59

We average about £55 a week for two adults and two small children. One in nappies. Shop in Aldi and do a very occasional small shop in Tesco.

flirtygirl · 09/05/2016 20:59

My 45-65 includes cleaning products and treats and i can go as low as £40 if needed.

flirtygirl · 09/05/2016 21:00

Forgot to add 2 adults, 17 and 6 year olds.
