To ask how much and how often you drink alcohol?

Falling270 · 09/05/2016 15:22

I'm trying to cut back on alcohol for all the usual reasons: to cut back on calories, health benefits, save money...

Just as a barometer for the "norm" (and sheer curiosity) how often and how much alcohol do you drink?

OP posts:
myusernamewastaken · 09/05/2016 22:13

I probably have 4 or 5 bottles of cider in a week....a pint or 2 at a pub quiz and the rest at home....the hot weather always makes me want a pint in the garden too x

BitchAdministrator · 09/05/2016 22:14

Although now I have a serious chocolate habit instead Shock

justjuanmorebeer · 09/05/2016 22:18

Last week: Monday = none
Tues = 2 gin and tonics
Weds = none
Thurs = three glasses of white wine and 1 aperol spritz
Friday = one can of lager
Saturday = two pimms, two red wines and a vodka and soda
Sunday = none

That is a heavy week for me as I would not usually go out on a weeknight but had theatre and a birthday dinner during same week. Fri- Sat quite typical.

shockedballoon · 09/05/2016 22:40

DH owns a wine shop...

However, I'd still day we're pretty average drinkers.
Couple of booze free nights per week (normally Mon & Tues - and I often don't drink we'd or thurs).
Any week night drinking is light - 1/3 to 1/2 bottle of wine between us. Occasionally a bit more if one of us has a shit day or the wine is particularly nice.
Saturdays DH always cooks a proper nice meal. We'll generally have a light cocktail/mixer drink, then a bottle of decent wine between us with the meal and sometimes a small rum or whiskey (more DH than me)
Sundays may have a late afternoon drink (more common in summer) and a bottle of wine between us with lunch/dinner, but we rarely finish the bottle.
Tbh we end up putting a lot of wine down the sink (except for Sat night bottle) as we don't feel we 'need' to finish it - plenty more wherever that came from thanks to DH!

NeedsAsockamnesty · 09/05/2016 22:52

I never drink any. I may have had a baileys a few Christmases ago but I can't remember.

I used to drink a fair bit but haven't for about 5/6 years. Mainly because it gives me heartburn

wheresthel1ght · 09/05/2016 22:56

Honestly, virtually never. I have spent years on antidepressants and mega strength pain killers so couldn't drink m. Plus I hate wine and beer and it always feels wrong to have vodka at the dinner table.

If I go out I will maybe have 7 or 8 vodka lime and lemonade a over a 5-6 hour period or will drink 4 or 5 cocktails but honestly I have probably drunk heavily (for me) once in the last 5 years

Adarajames · 10/05/2016 01:26

I rarely drink, am search & rescue volunteer, on call 24-7, and would feel bad if I couldn't respond to a call out as had drunk alcohol, so tend not to. Mind you, only have a cider / Crabbies at most when do have any, so not really a big drinker anyway!

smokeybandit · 10/05/2016 01:32

If going out, which is very rare, I'll put away quite a few spirits but bizarrely find it difficult to get properly drunk on anything that's not wine (2 glasses will put me to sleep). I just don't feel like I can enjoy drinking if I know I'm going back to dc's same night. So practically a non-drinker, not touched a drop so far this year.

Beingcompletelyhonest · 10/05/2016 01:38

How much do you drink OP?

itsbetterthanabox · 10/05/2016 01:46

I'll have a night out maybe every other month and I'll drink about 6 drinks but I don't really drink any other time.

Beingcompletelyhonest · 10/05/2016 02:05

YANBU to ask but YABU if you're not prepared to share yourself.

lyonkit · 10/05/2016 02:39

A bottle of vodka a week.

exWifebeginsat40 · 10/05/2016 04:48

i haven't had a drink for just over 2 years.

when I was drinking 'normally' it was 4/5 pints of Stella and 1.5 bottles of wine four to five times a week (or as often as I could get away with it). I went through a long phase of hiding vodka and topping up as well.

at the beginning of the end of my drinking it was 8 cans of vodka/cranberry during the day, then the beer/wine at night on top of that.

at the bitter end I was drinking round the clock and for some reason switched to strong cider and bottles of brandy. I once woke up after a 3 day binge to find 3 empty brandy bottles and a shed load of empty cans. that was the withdrawal that nearly killed me and I got sober after that.

there is more to the story than this, but suffice to say my alcoholism was nearly the end of everything. I never thought I could live without booze but here I am rocking sobriety like a boss! best thing I ever did was quit.

theigloohaslanded · 10/05/2016 06:01

Has anyone thought this might be some kind of sneaky survey ?
I drink loads and am "trying" to cut back but find it hard being on my own and for last couple of months out of work. It's easy to self medicate with decent wine (or indecent ) Wink

sashh · 10/05/2016 06:13

I try to only drink on weekends, but I will also drink for things like a birthday meal. I used to drink much more.

Becks Blue have been a revelation, alcohol free beer that tastes like beer. So in this weather I might come home from work and have a beer in the garden, but not an alcoholic one.

If only someone would make a non alcoholic wine that tasted like wine. I do sometimes put cranberry juice in a wine glass if I'm having something 'nice' for dinner.

gentlydownthestreamm · 10/05/2016 06:51

Until fairly recently, I would drink 5 or 6 nights a week. Ranging from 1 glass of wine per night to half a bottle plus a couple of cocktails.

Now, I don't drink Mon - Thurs unless I am going out or have friends round. I have found that as a result I want to drink less at the weekend, maybe two cocktails and a glass of wine on a Sat night, or 2-3 small glasses of wine over the course of a Sunday.

LobsterQuadrille · 10/05/2016 09:10

exWifebeginsat40 - well done to you. Your story sounds much like mine and the withdrawal/seizure/DTs nearly killed me too. Two years is great. I used to wish I could drink like "normal" people and now I am not bothered - I just accept that some of us are different and need to stay away from the stuff. Flowers

corythatwas · 10/05/2016 09:17

Over the last fortnight I have had:

1 glass of wine at a conference

2 glasses of wine at home (bottle shared between 3 adults over 2 evenings)

half a bitter shandy

1 weak g & t

exWifebeginsat40 · 10/05/2016 09:26

lobster congrats to you too. after 2 years i am getting comfortable with the fact that I don't drink (but never complacent - I am an alcoholic and will be forever). I lost a lot of friends to begin with - but my truest, dearest friends are delighted I am healthier now.

I lost my job, then my mind, then my family and my home. I live alone with my cats and have rebuilt the relationship with my child. I feel very settled now. I'm an adult child of alcoholics so it runs right through me. my life has been chaotic since I first got drunk aged 8. I'm just so grateful to have this second chance.

redhat · 10/05/2016 09:33

Nothing during the week ordinarily.

Friday evening I'll have a couple of glasses of wine at the cricket club whilst the DC have coaching.

Saturday I might have another couple if we're staying in.

If we are out with friends (maybe once or twice a month) I'd probably drink a bottle to a bottle and a half of wine.

VestalVirgin · 10/05/2016 09:52

I don't usually drink at all, as I don't like the taste of alcohol. Perhaps a glass a year on average, which is always social drinking (everyone else drinks alcohol and I drink some to not appear rude).

LittleLionMansMummy · 10/05/2016 10:00

I'd be interested to see if age/ stage of life has anything to do with alcohol consumption. I suspect it does.

In my 20s, before children, I regularly drank far more than is recommended. So may a bottle of wine every other evening. This was linked to smoking though - I was also a smoker so the two went well together. When gave up smoking I had to give up drinking too for a period of time and since then I haven't gone back to drinking as much.

In my 30s, since ds was born, I've had no more than 1 or 2 units once or twice a week.

Pregnant now and just coming out of first trimester. I've had no alcohol at all for three months. I have missed through taste and will enjoy the occasional white wine spritzer as my pregnancy progresses. I can't ever see myself going back to a bottle of wine every other night - partly because my career has progressed and I can no longer function well enough with a cloudy head, partly because I want to be a role model for my children and teach them to drink responsibly, partly because I've been quite personally affected by close relatives' alcoholism.

namelessposter · 10/05/2016 10:05

Half a bottle a night.

BillBrysonsBeard · 10/05/2016 10:09

LittleLion I'd have thought the same as you as I spent my 20s binge drinking and most people I know did, just for the fun of it. And now I'm 31 I don't drink anymore, but I feel like this isn't common. Most people I know or read about on here in their 30s/40s/50s have it regularly and have some dependency.. They use it to cope with a hard day with the kids, stressful jobs, the drudgery of daily life etc. I have my own unhealthy vice to help me get through it all!

parmalilac · 10/05/2016 10:09

Maybe two drinks in a week, sometime not even that. G&T perhaps on a Sunday before dinner, then share a beer or cider with DH another day at dinner. Would not bother me if I never had one again.
