To ask how much and how often you drink alcohol?

Falling270 · 09/05/2016 15:22

I'm trying to cut back on alcohol for all the usual reasons: to cut back on calories, health benefits, save money...

Just as a barometer for the "norm" (and sheer curiosity) how often and how much alcohol do you drink?

I'm gonna be the really bad honest person and say I binge drink every 2/4 weeks though I sometimes go a couple of months Blush.
Also have the odd bottle of wine if I go and meet a friend for lunch like half a bottle Grin

Paulat2112 · 09/05/2016 15:54

A few drinks once or twice a year.

blueskyinmarch · 09/05/2016 15:57

Okay then, in the spirit of honesty. I probably drink 5 out of 7 nights. During the week half to three quarters bottle wine. Friday and Saturday a whole bottle - maybe a little more. I know if i go over a bottle i feel shocking the next day. I was at a big boozy lunch yesterday and probably drank much more than that.

I absolutely need to cut down as i don’t need the empty calories, i don’t need the snacking that comes with drinking and i don’t need the possible health problems. I need a massive kick up the arse.

Sallystyle · 09/05/2016 15:57

Yesterday I had a Malibu and diet coke when we went out for dh's birthday and on Sat I had a glass of Pimms with MIL.

I usually have one drink when we go out to eat and a couple on the odd night out, although sometimes I just drink diet coke.

On average probably about one spirit a fortnight? I like the taste of spirits and cocktails but I could happily live without alcohol. Some months I drink nothing, other months I might drink a bit more but I'm a very light drinker.

Abecedario · 09/05/2016 15:57

Nothing Sun-Thurs generally.

Sometimes one or two on a Friday night, sometimes don't bother. The last three Friday's I've opened a bottle of cider or poured a wine then fallen asleep before I finished drinking it.

Saturdays if we stay in will be the same as Fri. If I go out though I'll get giddy, usually at least half a bottle of wine plus a few cocktails.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/05/2016 16:05

I agree with bluesky on these threads the people who don't drink much tend to post.

Me: I am trying not to drink on Mon, tues, wed, and fri eve. This is because I'm trying t cut back, and those particular days work round my new exercise regime.

On thurs sat and sun Dh and I share one or two bottles of wine. If we feel like more alcohol he'll have a beer or two, but I'll switch to alcohol free beer which does the trick of satisfying an alcohol craving.

Some weeks we drink more; last week for example we drank on Monday because it was a bank holiday, and we drank on Wednesday as we had a bereavement and just felt like a glass of wine.

I only drink wine.

If I feel desperate on a non drinking day, I'll have an alcohol free beer which takes any craving away.,

EponasWildDaughter · 09/05/2016 16:05

DH and i only drink on a Sat night. I have 2/3 strong whiskeys and he has 2 and a half pints of Katys bottled cider. It's been that way for about 4 years.

We drink more on hols, but not much; we're such lightweights now :)

Oysterbabe · 09/05/2016 16:09

Usually twice a week and I'll have 2 drinks on each occasion. It is just not worth having a hangover and a baby!

EponasWildDaughter · 09/05/2016 16:13

blueskyinmarch - OP. It has been my experience on MN that if you ask how much people drink on average you will get many many posters telling you they hardly drink anything ( which is fine)

I agree to be honest. Like the 'How often do you wash' threads Grin

For balance then, the reason DH and i don't drink much is because if he drinks more than that he becomes awful. He used to drink way too much, lost control of it all, and we both went T total for 2 years to break his habit. I used to binge drink in my 20s and 30s, but cant be arsed with the day after shite that comes with that anymore.

TriJo · 09/05/2016 16:13

I haven't drank since last summer - since I found out I was pregnant! I still haven't drank since the birth, DS has a huge appetite and I'm exclusively breastfeeding so I just don't see the point.

I used to generally have around 2-3 drinks every Friday and Saturday evening before.

BillBrysonsBeard · 09/05/2016 16:16

A few times a year but I don't think I'm the norm, it feels like most people I know drink most nights and get drunk on a weekend. I can see why people go on about gin and wine a lot on here, I'm starting to get tempted now that I have a terrible twos toddler Grin but trying to get pregnant so staying away for now.

CharminglyGawky · 09/05/2016 16:18

Maybe a couple of glasses of wine with a nice meal out once every couple of months. I can easily go 4-5 months dry without really noticing and then drink 3 weekends in a row, it depends what's going on. I don't drink at home unless I'm hosting something where everyone else is drinking.

I do however only drink the good stuff, I decided that as I barely drink any more when I do I'm going to enjoy it so normally it's champagne Blush If I'm provided the alcohol or a nice white wine or a cocktail if I'm out.

However I'm hopefully not going to be drinking anything at all for at least the next 8 months and I have to say I'm not going to miss it (well other than the champers on Christmas Day, I'll miss that!)

Fratelli · 09/05/2016 16:18

Maybe one or two glasses of wine a month. I have a 15mo though and usually drive if it's a choice of dp or I drinking. Just because I'm not bothered about drinking!

noeffingidea · 09/05/2016 16:19

I've only drunk alcohol once in the last 7 years. That was a couple of months ago at a wedding. I drunk quite a lot of wine and champagne.
Unfortunately that gave me strong cravings for a couple of weeks (which I resisted), so it's back on the wagon for me.
I wish I was one of those people who could drink a couple of glasses of wine or the odd glass of pimms on a nice sunny day, but sadly I'm not.

Pinkheart5915 · 09/05/2016 16:21

When not pregnant or breastfeeding I share a bottle of wine or sometimes champagne with dh on a Friday and Saturday.
Go for cocktails once a month with friends

Joolsy · 09/05/2016 16:22

I probably get through 1 bottle of 11-12% alc wine each week. I drink around 3 nights a week, 1-2 glasses each night.

UptownFunk00 · 09/05/2016 16:25

Before having kids once a month?

Now- I last 'drank' this time last year.

I only miss malabu and Coke, pina coladas and cider - all other booze can go away.

georgiatraher · 09/05/2016 16:25

I sip one glass of champagne at weddings.
I toast the winners at my dance competitions with cheap cava, usually just one sip and then I abandon my plastic cup.

A friend's birthday, I'll probably have a token cocktail with dinner. Other than that nothing at all. Just say no thank you, I'll have a lemonade.

The weight didn't drop off of me once I stopped drinking, but I didn't gain any more after Uni.

MNetter15 · 09/05/2016 16:28

A bottle of wine over the course of a weekend. That's either one glass on a Friday night, and finish it on the Saturday night, or open it on Saturday night and finish it on Sunday night.

I used to drink the entire bottle on a Saturday night, and it was actually a thread on Mumsnet that made me realise that it was far too much wine to consume in one sitting, and that most people only drank half Blush I have a pretty high tolerance, despite my small frame Shock

ADiamondInTheRough · 09/05/2016 16:30

I don't drink often, but when I do I can easily drink 6/7 pints of beer, more on a night out Blush

ifyoulikepinacolada · 09/05/2016 16:32

I buy a bottle of wine most fridays and drink that over the course of the weekend and rest of the week (my partner drinks beer). We normally go out once or twice a week and have 2 or 3 drinks then (usually g&t). So that.

I work quite a few evenings and early mornings though and keep three days a week strictly alcohol free. I'm very healthy in general though, sleep well and wake up refreshed, easily get 8 or so hours of exercise in over the course of the week and eat ridiculous amounts of veg, so i don't worry at all about the amount I drink.

DragonMamma · 09/05/2016 16:33

In the interests of balancing out the ones that drink hardly anything...

I drink 3 nights out of 7 and usually have mostly a bottle of wine each time.

Sometimes at the weekend it's more, especially if we are out and start early. I occasionally try to cut down, because of the units, but it's my one vice and I love it.

just me that's a total lush then Blush I drink far more than is good for me, too much and too often and I am well aware of it and the need to cut back or better still stop altogether.

UmbongoUnchained · 09/05/2016 16:36

I have one glass of wine a month which is actually a quarter of a glass topped up with lemonade. So a bottle of wine probably lasts me the year if I wasn't sharing it with my friend Grin
If I go out though (about twice a year) I will probably have 3-4 gin and bitter lemons and depending on who I'm with the odd tequila slammer. Then I shiver on my sofa for 5 days.
