To ask how much and how often you drink alcohol?

I'm trying to cut back on alcohol for all the usual reasons: to cut back on calories, health benefits, save money...

Just as a barometer for the "norm" (and sheer curiosity) how often and how much alcohol do you drink?

They being the threads.

LobsterQuadrille · 09/05/2016 18:46

As a recovering alcoholic, I'm really happy to say nothing and haven't had the desire to do so for a long time. In my drinking days - more than anyone so far on here, something I'm not in the least bit proud of.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 09/05/2016 18:46

Yeah I know. I was just saying it for effect Blush

I'm always amazed by the number of people who say they only have about four glasses of wine a year because they can take it or leave it though.

And at the other end of the spectrum, as someone else said, if you go on the Dry January threads, posters say they consume by any standards quite remarkable amounts of booze, and want to cut down

Baconyum · 09/05/2016 18:47

I'm a light drinker I'd say, 1-2 Morgan's and coke Fri/sat night (a 750cl bottle lasts me about 3 months), 2-3 nights out a year including birthday would be 2-3 large red wines (I hate draught cola).

But...I'm from a family of substance addicts so I'm probably hyper-aware of my intake.

Baconyum · 09/05/2016 18:48

Lobster well done! I have 2 family members in the same position and they've worked so hard to get and stay dry.

SavageBeauty73 · 09/05/2016 18:50

Too much.

I'm having a dry week to cut down. I love wine so much.

gingergenie · 09/05/2016 18:50

Way too much by MN standards. Not going to say how much, but more than most here!

KitKatCustard · 09/05/2016 18:50

Very little. Probably about two glasses of wine a couple of times a year. I just don't like the effect it has on me and don't find it relaxing or fun.
Individual choice.

justmyview · 09/05/2016 18:59

Until recently, 3 - 4 bottles of wine per week. Currently cutting down

This alcohol free sparkling wine is not quite the same as the real thing, but it's a pretty good substitute if you like that feeling of holding a wine glass at dinner. A tumbler of juice isn't quite the same, however delicious the juice might be

I don't drink, I used to when I went out. It used to be one which then turned into me getting shit faced tipsy, and then being hungover or exhausted the next day or three so whole weekend/ holiday would be wasted.
I'd much rather be fresh and have the time.

MissPronounced · 09/05/2016 19:00

Less than I used to. Now my usual weekly total is a bottle of wine and a couple of cocktails or ciders, over two or three evenings. I try to broadly stick to the guidelines of around 14 units per week.

I went through a period after splitting from my ex (and consequently living alone for the first time ever) of drinking most nights - usually three double gins/vodkas. I was tipsy and verging on drunk most nights for a few months. It seemed to help with the loneliness. I would only allow myself my first drink at 8pm, and when I started realising that I was counting down the hours from about midday each day I knew I needed to cut down.

I've had problems in the past with various addictive and obsessive behaviours, so it's something I always need to keep on top of. Every evening I find myself wanting a drink, but I never let myself drink on more than 3 each week.

Keely93 · 09/05/2016 19:28

I drink hardly any thing(nothing at all at the moment because of pregnancy) but my mum drinks a bottle of white wine every night and a bottle of beer too, without fail(too much in my opinion), my sister drinks about 2 cans of beer a night, my dad about half a bottle of wine at the weekend :) x

PortiaCastis · 09/05/2016 19:31

I haven't had a drink since Christmas and that was a glass of champagne. I gave up drinking 5 years ago after being married to an alcoholic

hazelangell · 09/05/2016 20:06

I'm not normal in regards to drinking alcohol. I very very rarely drink - like maybe a sip of champagne once a year with Christmas dinner (don't even finish that).

BillBrysonsBeard · 09/05/2016 20:11

I'm one of the people who hardly drinks, maybe 3-4 times a year... But I'm a binge eater. If this was a binge eating thread I'd be confessing to very excessive habits on a daily basis.. Don't be ashamed of bring a regular drinker, we all have our vices. Yeah there are a judgey types around but most of us are aware that everyone overindulges in something.

stumblymonkey · 09/05/2016 20:15

I don't drink very often at all...a glass or two of prosecco on special occasions like birthday/NYE/Easter...

I don't drink alcohol at all.

allegretto · 09/05/2016 20:19

A glass of wine three times a week. One beer on another day.

dollylucy · 09/05/2016 20:22

Most days
One, usually 2 bottles of beer

Ilovewillow · 09/05/2016 20:23

Not sure I'm average in this respect but 1 glass a week with a meal on a Saturday!

stumblymonkey · 09/05/2016 20:23

I'm another one that cut down drastically...for me it was being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and vowing to do whatever it took to be as well as I can be since I'm the breadwinner and need a stable income.

Before that I never drank at home but I'd go out after work one or two nights a week and have anywhere between 1 - 2 bottles of wine. Then weekends maybe another 2-3 bottles. On a very hard night I might drink 4 bottles (and be spectacularly out of control).

So yeah...I've gone from about 8 bottles of wine a week at my worst to about one bottle every two or three months now.

PhoebeMcPeePee · 09/05/2016 20:29

I don't drink very much at home as I keep a good stock of soft drinks so it's mainly just as & when I go out which is usually every 2-3 weeks but varies massively. Last 3 weeks for example:

Week 1: 1 small glass of wine with a takeaway Saturday night
Week 2: nothing
Week 2: Monday bookclub c. 4 glasses of fizz
Friday 1 bottle of beer in the garden,
Saturday out for dinner 2 g&t, 3 glasses of red wine
Sunday another beer in the garden

pointythings · 09/05/2016 20:30

This time a year ago I drank heavily - about 45 units a week. I was worried about alcohol dependence, so I did a dry June and felt so much better. Now I don't drink at all Mon - Thu and have 12-14 units a week across a weekend. I do dry January and dry June on top of that. I am 44lbs lighter, sleep like a baby and have tons of energy. And of course with not buying alcohol, I have money to buy shoes.

If you're thinking of cutting down, just do it.

blibblibs · 09/05/2016 20:34

Used to be every night, but then I got a job with a really early start so down to Fri & Sat nights only. Might have a bottle of wine each night, might have one bottle over both nights. Decided on beer this Sat as the weather was so nice, bought 8 bottles, DH had two and I had 4. Had the other 2 last night as no work today and will have a few gins tonight as no work tomorrow either.
I probably drink a fair bit, but I like it Wine
