Naming ceremony

We've been invited to a naming ceremony Hmm
Regardless of my feelings towards these events (along with baby showers and the like) do we have to take a gift? What would be appropriate? It's about a month before the babies' first birthday, for which we'll buy a gift, and we're skint. I would say £5 budget per gift.

For the AIBU - AIBU to fucking hate these things and be dreading it?!?!? And to be pissed off it's so close to 1st birthday? If there's a party for that I will not be going!!

Expat You did it in an insulting manner. You could have said "I think they're pointless/I don't like them", instead you said they're a hipster trend and silly.

Pretty rude.

LouBlue1507 · 05/05/2016 14:46

pootles Yes I like that!! Hehe! Thanks!

SirChenjin · 05/05/2016 14:52

Future - if you think hipster trend and silly is pretty rude then you're in for a shock. "Grumpy bastard" otoh is just rude.

FutureGadgetsLab · 05/05/2016 14:54

Sir the whole tone of expat's posts were condescending, no need to be obtuse.

RufusTheReindeer · 05/05/2016 14:57

Think i would rather be called a bastard than a hipster

SirChenjin · 05/05/2016 15:01

Obtuse? Goodness me, that's pretty rude and condescending. Not quite the same level as grumpy bastard, granted.

Me too Rufus - although I am developing a lovely hipster beard.

Pootles2010 · 05/05/2016 15:02

Rufus you did it before it was cool Grin

FutureGadgetsLab · 05/05/2016 15:04

Typical, people who are happy to give it yet can't take it back. Shock

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/05/2016 15:06

I went to one almost 20 years ago. Hippy not hipster. It's a chance for people to dress up, celebrate the baby and the parents, and have a piss-up. I simply can't see the down-side.

SirChenjin · 05/05/2016 15:07

Take what?

whatever22 · 05/05/2016 15:09

And naming ceremonies? 'Um, this child's name is X' Yeah, okay. We already knew that. How fucking stupid. Another hipster, silly trend.

I know right? It's almost as bad as degree ceremonies, which are always months after people get their results. We already know you passed!

And don't get me started on Olympic award ceremonies. We just saw who won the race for goodness sake!

And the royal family are so hipsterish with their coronations when you already know who is going to be the next monarch.

You know the other day someone had the affront to mention the funeral they were holding for someone who was already known to be dead!

Etc.

GlitteryKnickersAndBra14 · 05/05/2016 15:12

Why don't you forward a copy of your OP to the parents. I'm sure you will no longer be invited to either.

SirChenjin · 05/05/2016 15:13

The difference whatever is that these are all formal ceremonies. A naming ceremony - where you all just get together without a celebrant - and go 'here's the child and this is its name, as you already know' is just a party. Parties are good, nice to get together, no need to call it a ceremony. It's not a birthday ceremony for example.

FutureGadgetsLab · 05/05/2016 15:13

Sir Snarky remarks.

SirChenjin · 05/05/2016 15:13

Indeed.

FutureGadgetsLab · 05/05/2016 15:14

Your problem is people call it a ceremony?

Lol this is just "those are traditional so it's okay, this is new and different and it makes me uncomfortable to go against tradition".

Pootles2010 · 05/05/2016 15:16

Once again, Sir, there normally is a celebrant, certainly was with ours. Am I allowed to call it a ceremony?

readytorage · 05/05/2016 15:20

YANBU. It's very much people saying "I don't believe in God but I'm grabby and
really want people to buy my DC presents as if it were a christening."

TickleMyTeacakes · 05/05/2016 15:21

The (non) word 'grabby' needs to bore off.

Olddear · 05/05/2016 15:21

My tuppence worth is, I imagined something like this would be done when the child would be a few weeks old, I personally can't see why you'd have a naming ceremony when it's 11 months old! But I'm waiting for the usual 'judgypants' comment because any opinion on MN is judging, which you must never, ever do

FutureGadgetsLab · 05/05/2016 15:22

When I considered it I never even thought about presents, ready.

People need to stop reading ulterior motives into things.

SirChenjin · 05/05/2016 15:25

You're allowed to dance about naked with a carrot up one nostril singing We are the Billy Boys and call it a ceremony if you want Pootles. I suspect that most people will just raise one eyebrow and get on with enjoying the party.

Pootles2010 · 05/05/2016 15:27

No, me neither Future - and indeed most people didn't buy anything. And if they did - it was stuff for baby, not for us? Like nice little keep-sakes. There were no diamond rings or wads of cash!

Pootles2010 · 05/05/2016 15:28

It was in a registry office, with a registrant. What more do you want? You said no celebrant. There was a celebrant.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/05/2016 15:29

It's very much people saying "I don't believe in God but I'm grabby and
really want people to buy my DC presents as if it were a christening."

Atheists can't win, can we? Use churches for stuff and we're hypocrites. Don't use them but celebrate anyway; grabby and hipsters. Don't do anything; joyless bastards sucking the joy and cancelling Christmas.
