To really not like divan beds?

So we're trying to buy a new bed. Simple right? Only DH wants a divan bed as we need storage drawers underneath (small room). I would much prefer a solid wood frame with separate storage drawers but he's worried about the dust collecting in them...it has got to be the most protracted debate we've had in a while (really need to get a life) but essentially I think divans are dated, a bit ugly and I hate you can't judge they're quality as all the materials are inside (if that's make sense). He thinks a plain grey one would look good and there'd be no dust gathering/better storage. Who's right? Aibu and missing something?

I hate divans and ottoman beds. There's something about the clear space under the bed that I like. The thought of sleeping on top of stuff makes me feel odd.
Luther did spook me though but thankfully we sleep in the loft so get a good view under the bed as you go upstairs.

abigamarone · 04/05/2016 22:38

Divans are brilliant. If you want to take a journey back to the 1970s whenever you go to bed.

Junosmum · 04/05/2016 22:43

I don't like divans either, but he's right about the dust.

Kidnapped · 04/05/2016 22:45

Notso, yeah. I like the clear space.

And I hate having anything over my head in a bedroom. Like those fitted wardrobe things from the 80s with overbed storage. Feels like it is going to crash down on me as I sleep.

Also don't like any kind of footboard or anything that stops your feet from hanging out of the bed.

And I don't like fabric headboards. Or leather headboards.

Apart from that I'm easy. Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 04/05/2016 22:55

I can't cope with overhead shelves or cupboards, don't even like pictures on the wall above the headboard. I've never had a bed with a footboard and would never buy one, I like to be able to sit on the end of the bed, stand and use it to sort laundry on, have kids piling on and off the bed (we read stories and play games there before they go to bed).

Notso · 04/05/2016 22:58

Kidnapped yes to all of your dislikes! Grin

Rhinosaurus · 04/05/2016 23:03

After going through two bedsteads with those stupid slats and breaking them by just having a shag, I've gone to divan - can't beat it, bit high up but very comfy and no worries about the "ping" when a slat comes out of its stupid little plastic holder and the whole lot on one side ping out in sympathy, or the "craacckk" when they can't stand the combined weight of two people on them..... Divans all the way, fuck the style - I need robustness Grin

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 05/05/2016 06:33

Hahaha rhinosaurus, your post made me lol and I hate to lol. Don't even get me started on overhead fitted furniture, or fitted furniture in general. We've just moved into a preserved 1970s dream complete with white coffin style overhead cupboards. I want to cry every time I look at it whilst DH rejoices in the amount of storage we have. The mans an obsessed fool. I'd rather burn all our possessions than keep them.

So this recent scare on ottomans - if we decide to get one do I really need to concentrate on its mechanism etc or is it just one of those awful incidents? We have 3 under 4 and poor parenting skills mean they aren't constantly under supervision....

I'll see your white overhead coffins and raise you a similar fake mahogany MFI nightmare that was left in our current house when we bought it.

Luckily it was made for a double and we have a slightly larger ikea bed that wouldn't fit in the gap and I think I put it on eBay the day we moved in. A lovely young couple with hideous taste paid about £130 to relieve us of them.

Somewhat coincidentally I saw a story about the dangers of lift up beds and DCs in the paper at the weekend.

Sorry forgot to post the picture.

lovescourgettes2 · 05/05/2016 06:52

Having made the change recently to a divan I would never go back to a frame. I love my new bed .The divan is so much more comfortable and the storage is dust free as posters above have mentioned. I was always banging my thigh on the blasted wooden frame I had a permanent bruise !

BarbarianMum · 05/05/2016 06:52

I hate divans and we have a wooden bed frame and separate storage. I love our bed but your dh is right about the dust!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 05/05/2016 06:54

Our ottoman hasn't got lifting loops, there are small holes that you put your hands into and lift from there.

whois · 05/05/2016 07:10

If it has a loop, just slit it so that it is two single pieces of fabric rather ban a noose like loop.

Scone1nSixtySeconds · 05/05/2016 07:35

Mine doesnt have a loop either. My dc are older (12 and 10) but as its a big kingsize can't really lift it so no worries about getting trapped.

Backpfeifengesicht · 05/05/2016 07:51

Sorry, I wasn't familiar with the term "divan" bed. I looked it up and found that it refers to a bed with storage, which ironically is exactly the kind of bed we own! We love our bed, not sure what else to add.

MangoMoon · 05/05/2016 08:04

Mine doesn't have a loop, you just lift from the end of the frame.

The initial part of the lift would be too heavy for a child aswell btw, so don't worry about them lifting it themselves.

Trills · 05/05/2016 08:17

Weirdly not all divans have storage.

I've had ones in rented houses where the edges are solid all the way down - no drawers or openings or anything.

What is the point in that?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 05/05/2016 08:21

My 10yo can manage our Kingsize ottoman fairly easily, the ease depends on how many gas lifters there are, ours has 4 (the base is two narrow single bed sized boxes clipped together inside and with one lid and one mattress).

I did inadvertently shut a cat in it for the day once Blush.

sooperdooper · 05/05/2016 08:36

I'm with Rhinosaurus - the slats on bed frames just bloody break if you have a shag! We've broken two and we're pretty normal shaggers I reckon Hmm I couldn't be bothered to keep worrying about breaking it, even if the frame is solid wood the slats always seem to be made out of that flimsy wood that's crap.

We've got a new grey divan with a big chunky headboard and a big end drawer that's really nice - and we don't have a frilly valance, I don't see why you'd need one if you buy a divan bed in a nice fabric

cleanmachine · 06/05/2016 09:02

Ice airways hated divans since we had then a kid. They were so uncomfortable and ugly. However when we moved house I bought one for my son. It is a double with 4 drawers. We made sure to buy high quality bed and memory foam mattress. His bed is the most comfortable one I have ever known. The divan gives so much extra storage that his room is always tidy. The divan base supports the mattress perfectly. And it's a gorgeous dark grey colour which is great. I'm actually thinking of getting a divan for our room now. W love in a big house so storage us not an issue but terry do somehow make the room look more clean cut and uncluttered.

Mov1ngOn · 06/05/2016 11:40

We probably not normal shaggers... (use the bars of the head/foot board for um activities). Just get a solid wood frame rather than a cheap frame bed!

whois · 06/05/2016 11:58

What is the point in that?

Cheap. Very very cheap to buy a divan without drawers. And no assembly.

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 07/05/2016 07:19

Thanks for all the replies. In an exciting finale to my exciting post, I think I've been sold on an ottoman frame 😱 I'm still not impressed with how they look but can't deny the storage will be useful in our small room and small house. The DH is pleased I've crossed to the other side. Now we have to argue about what awful style to choose between. Has anyone ever bought from made.com? They have some that aren't too hideous....
