To really not like divan beds?

So we're trying to buy a new bed. Simple right? Only DH wants a divan bed as we need storage drawers underneath (small room). I would much prefer a solid wood frame with separate storage drawers but he's worried about the dust collecting in them...it has got to be the most protracted debate we've had in a while (really need to get a life) but essentially I think divans are dated, a bit ugly and I hate you can't judge they're quality as all the materials are inside (if that's make sense). He thinks a plain grey one would look good and there'd be no dust gathering/better storage. Who's right? Aibu and missing something?

Lol at all these tales of clowns and serial killers.

My cats like to sleep under the bed and often shift around making noises down there. Once one of them got into a discarded primark bag and it rustled out from under the bed in the middle of the night which was quite scary.

Maybe I should get a drawers bed but I can't bring myself to deny them their favourite sleeping place.

We love our ottoman, king size, gas lift so nice and easy (10yo DC can manage it no problem). Masses of storage, no dust inside, no dusty box lids. And way comfier than our old pine bed.

Piglet, do you know who makes footboards for divans? Can't find anybody...

PigletJohn · 04/05/2016 19:14

nope.

Mov1ngOn · 04/05/2016 19:24

I didn't know anyone under about 100 had divans these days! They remind me of cheap bnbs and the such like. And an uncomfortable nights sleep.

I'd rather my mattress could breathe a little and I want the ability to actually be able to clean underneath. Space for boxes is also good....

We're looking for an oak king size frame bed at the moment - and yes I want a footboard.

jay55 · 04/05/2016 19:28

I move often so a frame is essential.
Make sure it's high enough to get decent sized boxes under.

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 04/05/2016 19:38

Haha yeah I've only ever known my grandparents to have divan beds. But then everyone is raving about their ottomans. My head is being turned...I've seen a few nice ones on made.com and mattress man...am I prematurely ageing taste wise?!

Divan bases are super light and double beds split into two smaller blocks :-)

Bensond does seasonal. I saw them when I bought mine. All divans have fixings for them too.

Trills · 04/05/2016 20:02

I don't like them either.

Scone1nSixtySeconds · 04/05/2016 20:04

We have an ottoman bought after much chuntering from dh, we got it from bedstar as we were a bit borassic.

I put it together and that wasnt much fun by myself but it is so practical. I have all our bedding in there, spare duvets, towels, birthday presents.

Charley50 · 04/05/2016 20:25

Fuckin' hate divans. Love my Bensons for Beds hiphop bed, bought in the sale. It's wood with rounded corners. It also comes as an Ottoman. I like to have air under my bed.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 04/05/2016 20:35

Loads of lovely wooden beds at Warren Evans. Great service too. Hate divans.

MangoMoon · 04/05/2016 20:46

I got my ottoman from an eBay shop - had a quick look earlier and there's a huge selection now.

I've moved house twice since I bought it & due to move again in the next couple of months - it's really simple to take apart & rebuild.

Loads of different styles to choose from on eBay (clicky link)

MangoMoon · 04/05/2016 20:48

Sorry, cocked the link up Blush

I don't like the look of divans.

Don't like anything stored under beds at all, no matter what type. I like to be able to see through the underneath the frame of the bed to the other side. It just chops up the room and makes the room look smaller otherwise.

We've got this one. here

Cass168 · 04/05/2016 21:02

At the risk of outing myself.... We had a sleigh bed that I loved. It gave up the ghost when we moved house (it looked the business but wasn't great quality) and dh persuaded me to buy a divan. We researched and splashed out on one that should last for years. I HATE it.
I thought it was just a bed but I was so wrong. Go with your gut feeling.

Mov1ngOn · 04/05/2016 21:08

THe lifty-uppy beds scare me silly. What if you dont see while a child comes in and bends over and gets cut in half.... or it slams down while your head is inside getting out sheets...

shudder

Nomorechickens · 04/05/2016 21:10

I hate divans too. Threatened DH with a futon, made him realise that maybe wooden frames aren't so bad after all. We have a Warren Evans floating frame too, it's fantastic, no bashing your legs on the wooden frame, and room for a storage drawer underneath. And made in the UK.

gingerbreadmanm · 04/05/2016 21:15

I have a frame bed. I love the style but i am now desperate for a divan. I'd love something high up, more support and doesnt feel like it is going to collapse on you with one false move. and to stop the dog running underneath it

I would go for a modern looking one though with a nice coloured base and huge fabric headboard.

Just have to convince dp Grin

RTKangaMummy · 04/05/2016 21:21

We are about to buy a new bed and are going to get another divan with 4 drawers (2 on each side) I realise now that people think they are old fashioned but we like them

I would also freak out about having somebody hiding under the bed and grabbing my ankles as I get out

Our main problem here is our Labrador keeps loosing her tennis ball under furniture so with a divan it won't fit underneath

The worst bed we slept in was in a Vienna hotel, it was a wooden bed that had the bottom of the bed wider and longer than the mattress and so kept banging our shins on the bed frame, it was a weird design of frame and very painful

PickledLilly · 04/05/2016 21:50

I hate the way divans look but wanted storage so we bought a captains bed - wooden frame but with wooden built in drawers under and no room for murderers to hide Wink

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 04/05/2016 21:51

I honestly cannot envisage a scenario where you wouldn't see a child leaning under the upper part of an ottoman as you lowered it, they rise above adult head height so you are looking into it as you start to lower and you have to pull quite hard to get them down, they move very slowly. Also if you let go part way down ours either stops where it is or rises slowly up again.
