AIBU?

To really not like divan beds?

So we're trying to buy a new bed. Simple right? Only DH wants a divan bed as we need storage drawers underneath (small room). I would much prefer a solid wood frame with separate storage drawers but he's worried about the dust collecting in them...it has got to be the most protracted debate we've had in a while (really need to get a life) but essentially I think divans are dated, a bit ugly and I hate you can't judge they're quality as all the materials are inside (if that's make sense). He thinks a plain grey one would look good and there'd be no dust gathering/better storage. Who's right? Aibu and missing something?

You don't have to move the mattress or duvet to lift up the ottoman beds OP. Check out the malm one on ikea for photos.

Ottoman style is fantastic. You get loads more storage space, and it's easily accessible (don't need clearance for drawers to pull out. No dust issues either

There are lots of styles now too

I have a divan but I am embarrassed to admit that it is because even at the age of 27 I am still terrified of someone hiding under the bed and grabbing my ankle!

Our spare bed is an ottoman with gas lift. The mattress base is rather like that of a frame bed but the underside is the same material as the headboard so to me it's smooth to look at.
It stores so much without boxes on view.
True I've vacuum packed a lot of the bedding that is stored but there's a couple of winter duvets , sheets, covers, pillowcases and couple of pillows under there.

There are many styles available, I can't remember where we got ours from possibly through Amazon. It has a good mattress on it so is comfy.

( I must check the lifting strap and cut it in two if it's in a loop after reading about a wee boy getting caught in one)

You don't move anything to open an ottoman. Just grab the loops and pull, or if it is a kingsize, press the button. This is mine except mine is double. www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk/cleo-ottoman-divan-bed-set/?variantSku=320800009 It has rubber matting under the mattress so the mattress doesn't slide when you open it. Nothing ever falls off, not even pillows and the straps are tiny so you can just get your hands through them. Even the smallest toddler couldn't get their head in there.

And yes divan's are more comfy, particularly if your mattress is memory foam as it provides a solid, flat base. With slats they weaken in places, especially the middle as more pressure is exerted there than on the edges and they have nothing to brace them. So you end up with a slightly dippy bit in the middle. Divans are solid and don't have any single weak points. That is why they advise you to put your mattress on the floor when it is sagging to see if it still does it, because some mattresses aren't really suitable for slatted frames.

Just be careful with gas lift/top opening beds especially if you change the mattress it is supplied with. I know someone who was seriously injured when it collapsed on him. It would have killed him if it had been his head in the way. The mattress was too heavy for it.

We have an ottoman divan and it's fab, it's a Silentnight and the headboard matches the divan bit - they're nothing like the old fashioned padded velvet things.
I would never have a frame again.

Ottoman beds are the Best Thing Ever.

Loads of space to hide crap and easy to access.

You just lift it up - bed fully made, nothing shifts.

I got my ottoman bed from an eBay shop about 8 years ago when they were just starting to take off.

It looks nice, more modern than a divan & nowhere for clowns to hide in the night like with a standard bed frame....

I am 100% WITH YOU op. Grin Mil tried to foist a divan on us. Cant bear them,

In a HUGE room - maybe, just maybe, otherwise I hate the bulk of them, cant get to bed properly to make it etc.

Frame is so much better in a small room, and you can simply buy any number of under bed storage accessories.

Thanks for the info on comfort etc that does sell the divan base a bit. As does the ottoman idea now. Hmmm. But they're still so...fugly? But maybe I should let DH have his practical way.
On a slight tangent - frame or divan - where would you buy from? I've looked at next (but are you paying for brand?) ikea - nothing I like really, dreams - stuff of divan nightmare but are they good quality? Bensons - website annoying. No shops near us to look either

Or for a cheaper option try memoryfoam warehouse online. We bought one of the kids a double faux leather one from there. I wasn't expecting great quality for the price but was very pleasantly surprised.

Dreams are good quality but charge ridiculously for everything, even the warranty costs you 80 quid. Next you pay for the brand. Bensons are fantastic in store but the website is hell. I've heard good things about mattressman though.

I was just thinking about this today funnily enough! I've got a divan and want to get rid of it so I can get a nice oak frame one. I think frames look for much nicer than divans but that's just my opinion. You can still store things under frames as well.

Does anyone know why I can't find a divan with a footboard? Because that's what I want and nowhere seems to do them.. I agree that divans are ugly but really don't want a frame....

I like divans for children though and I love the storage it has. Just slide the door open, in the toys and crap go, and slide the door shut again Grin. My boys have divan beds and i can cram loads of stuff under their beds. Which leaves their lovely bedroom looking clutter free. I've just got rid of loads of their toys that they don't play with anymore, so even the inside of their beds are tidy! :)

A divan will still get dust but you won't be able to clean it. Frames let air circulate which is good. I prefer divans because frames always seem to break or creak, but I got an ottoman for storage and everything went mouldy inside at and it broke. I will stick with divans (I like valances - hate seeing boxes) or a very good quality wood frame.

I think it works like this:

If you buy a divan set where the base is not sprung (it has a hard, padded top, and often drawers underneath) that the mattress sits on, it is made with no head or footboard, but concealed behind the covering material at each end are two screw-holes. You find them by rubbing with your fingers. There are two holes at each side, one above the other.

You puncture the fabric over these holes, and screw in the bolts that hold the headboard. I have never felt the need to fit a footboard, but I imagine there are similar holes at each end of the base. Sometimes the beds are delivered with plastic buffers screwed into these holes to hold it off the wall.

I looks like the screws are M8

We had a normal frame bed til two or three years ago when the episode of Luther aired where the man slides out silently from under the bed while the woman sleeps. I kid you not, I went online and bought a divan bed the same night because I couldn't sleep through sheer terror. DH still doesn't know that's why I bought it. If I told him, I fully expect he'd see it as total proof of my madness.

I love it. No serial killers under there now.
