I'd never heard it before having kids. Everyone keeps telling me DD is bonny. I'm not 100% on what it means. Does it mean fat?
She does have lovely chubby cheeks and thighs that you just can't help but squidge.

Why would you think it meant fat?! Sorry never ever connected with fat.

Bonny as in bonnie prince Charlie or bonnie blithe and gay.

abigamarone · 03/05/2016 20:56

Lancashire here and it doesn't mean fat. It means 'lovely' rather than just pretty.

NickyEds · 03/05/2016 20:59

I'm in Yorkshire and here it means pretty. My MIL is from Lancashire and to her it definitely means fat/chubby, she uses it to describe adults too, "so and so's turned out bonny which is odd as she was such a skinny child"Confused

ElizabethG81 · 03/05/2016 21:03

It means a bit chubby, but in a healthy, rosy cheeked kind of way where I'm from (North West).

MiniMover · 03/05/2016 21:10

Chubby isn't an insult for a baby. They're supposed to be chubby until they're mobile then if eating a healthy diet, they slim down. Body first, then face. Bobby is a lovely word for a baby.

MiniMover · 03/05/2016 21:10

bonny not Bobby

Quietattheback · 03/05/2016 21:12

In the north east it just seems to mean pretty but in the north west it can mean pretty but chubby.

Oysterbabe · 03/05/2016 21:12

I think the regional and generational variation in the usage is really interesting.

I'd take it to mean cute and healthy looking. South east. But def a good word.

x2boys · 03/05/2016 21:14

Where I. Am in bolton it means cute and pretty in certain parts of the north west in Wigan and leigh it means chubby .

lljkk · 03/05/2016 21:16

When I say bonny I mean very healthy, thriving, handsome, attractive. So could be small or fat or thin or ugly. But still thriving so bonny.

KindDogsTail · 03/05/2016 21:25

Very pretty, perfect, healthy, enchanting.

crossparsley · 03/05/2016 22:35

bonny means bonny - lovely in a non-gendered way - a bonny baby isn't handsome or pretty, it's just happy and healthy-looking. Not fat!

"Bonnie lassie", now that means unslim, if you're over about 14. Pretty as well - there's a backhanded/controlling compilment.

whois · 03/05/2016 22:46

Well I never knew it meant chubby! I always thought it was pretty/lovely/healthy.

AnnieOnnieMouse · 03/05/2016 23:08

Nice looking, well formed, healthy, and yes, usually with a bit of 'squidge', but only a bit - as others have said, a bit of squidge seen as healthy, especially 60+ years ago.
(I were a bonnie wee lass)

YolandiFuckinVisser · 03/05/2016 23:17

My xh has a baby boy named Bonny. He's both chubby and cute. It means pretty to me, never thought it meant chubby. Never would have considered it a boys name either TBH but none of my business!

allowlsthinkalot · 04/05/2016 07:55

It means fat to me but my family are from Lancashire and use it to mean pretty.

ElleGrace · 04/05/2016 08:59

I'm from NWE and here it means healthy. Like, a chubby, glowing baby would be considered the picture of health...

ewanthedreamsheep · 04/05/2016 12:38

I'm from Lancashire and never heard it to mean fat; it's pretty.

Toddzoid · 04/05/2016 12:50

Never heard it mean fat! am in Yorkshire, here it just means pretty/cute/beautiful. I was called bonny constantly as a child, I wasn't remotely fat...

ConfuciousSayWhat · 04/05/2016 13:21

It means pudgy and cute here

JulieTwo · 04/05/2016 13:29

Am also in Lancashire and my SIL [an American who also lives in Lancashire too] called her granddaughter an ugly lump the other day. I don't think she meant bonny. No translation or hidden message there I think ... :(

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 04/05/2016 13:40

Babies are supposed to be bonny! Smiley and rosy and squidgy!

My nephew was 7 weeks premature and he looked like a skinny little frog for the first couple of months. He's much bonnier now :)
