I'd never heard it before having kids. Everyone keeps telling me DD is bonny. I'm not 100% on what it means. Does it mean fat?
She does have lovely chubby cheeks and thighs that you just can't help but squidge.

Where I come from it means beautiful but I once got a very dirty look from someone who came from a place where it means fat. Originally meant beautiful but has come to mean chubby in some places.

It's usually a euphamism for chubby (which is generally considered good in a baby, I think). Sometimes it just means a smiley, happy baby. Depends on context, I suppose, like when someone tells you your looking 'well'.

I grew up in the NE but live in the SE. When I first took my DD (who'd been born on the 98th percentile and followed her line) to the health clinic, the health visitor took one look at her and "gosh she's bonny isn't she? Really bonny."

Used to the NE definition of that word, I beamed at her and said "thank you!" It soon became clear that we were talking at cross purposes when she began telling me about the dangers of childhood obesity and that I should be reducing her feeds.

DD was 5 weeks old and EBF at the time. When I told her that she told me I should switch to formula and "control" how much she was allowed....Angry

Anyway, definitions clearly vary with geographically!

I'm up north and I'd never use bonny to mean fat! It's very complimentary and not given up much unless your baby is really beautiful Smile.

In east of Scotland bonny bairns pronounced bony means pretty/handsome child/baby

Years ago they had bonny baby competitions

I was told ds1 was bonny all the time as a baby (chubby, beautiful skin) he has grown into a perfect specimen of a boy, I still get comments of random strangers about how handsome he is.

Babies are supposed to be bonny! Smiley and rosy and squidgy!

My nephew was 7 weeks premature and he looked like a skinny little frog for the first couple of months. He's much bonnier now :)

Am also in Lancashire and my SIL [an American who also lives in Lancashire too] called her granddaughter an ugly lump the other day. I don't think she meant bonny. No translation or hidden message there I think ... :(

I'm from NWE and here it means healthy. Like, a chubby, glowing baby would be considered the picture of health...

My xh has a baby boy named Bonny. He's both chubby and cute. It means pretty to me, never thought it meant chubby. Never would have considered it a boys name either TBH but none of my business!

Nice looking, well formed, healthy, and yes, usually with a bit of 'squidge', but only a bit - as others have said, a bit of squidge seen as healthy, especially 60+ years ago.
(I were a bonnie wee lass)

Well I never knew it meant chubby! I always thought it was pretty/lovely/healthy.

bonny means bonny - lovely in a non-gendered way - a bonny baby isn't handsome or pretty, it's just happy and healthy-looking. Not fat!

"Bonnie lassie", now that means unslim, if you're over about 14. Pretty as well - there's a backhanded/controlling compilment.

When I say bonny I mean very healthy, thriving, handsome, attractive. So could be small or fat or thin or ugly. But still thriving so bonny.
