To have missed the fact that the spelling of the word 'pyjamas' recently changed?

To 'pajamas'?! Wtf? I know there are some things that people notoriously get wrong, the usual 'chester draws', 'defiantly' (definitely) and even 'rest bite' (respite)! But 'pajamas' seems to be a new one or have I just missed it for years?! I've even seen it on printed mugs etc recently! Aaargh!

And breathe...Grin

It is the USA spelling I think.

MangoUnchained · 02/05/2016 19:44

Pajamas is the American spelling.

Bocolatechiscuit · 02/05/2016 19:47

Wow!! Well I never!!! I had no idea! Well now I do and it might not buy me QUITE so much in future! You learn something new every day!

I'll get me coat...Grin

We've always spelled it pajamas in the US. I'd pronounce pyjamas "pie-jamas." Is that how you pronounce it?

ThroughThinkandThing · 02/05/2016 20:22

We (or at least I) pronounce it puh jar ms, with an emphasis on the jar and swallowing the final vowel.

tibbawyrots · 02/05/2016 20:40

in the UK pronounced pur-jar-mers but spelt pyjamas.

Lovely word when you look at it, great for Scrabble...

BikeRunSki · 02/05/2016 21:01

It's a pretty well established alternative to pyjamas.

mrsm43s · 02/05/2016 22:09

I spell it pyjamas and pronounce it pige- amas. The "pige" being like the beginning of pigeon. SE accent.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 02/05/2016 22:11

I say it the same as mrs. I'm in the Midlands. I've never heard anyone say pur-jar-mahs and now I'm wondering how that sounds out loud!

oldlaundbooth · 02/05/2016 22:13

Does pyjamas originate from India?

PrimalLass · 02/05/2016 22:14

in the UK pronounced pur-jar-mers but spelt pyjamas.

In some parts of the UK.

We don't all add Rs where they shouldn't be!

p'ja-mas

StealthPolarBear · 02/05/2016 22:15

Ah now I've recently started spelling it pajamas as I noticed the new spelling and assumed I'd been getting it wrong all these years. I will revert :)

StealthPolarBear · 02/05/2016 22:15

Can't bear it when ds talks about pee jays though, just reminds me of big brother

FarrowandBallAche · 02/05/2016 22:16

Defiantly always puzzles me. How can they not see it's nothing like definitely? Even definitely is better.

But yes pajama's - horrid.

Bexwhit85 · 02/05/2016 22:17

Rest bite always makes me laugh. I see it a lot in the notes at work (written by "professionals")

StealthPolarBear · 02/05/2016 22:18

Loose now seems to be the accepted (or should that be 'excepted' spelling) of the verb.

SenecaFalls · 02/05/2016 22:20

in the UK pronounced pur-jar-mers but spelt pyjamas.

Where did all those "r"s come from? Rhotic speaker here. Smile

StealthPolarBear · 02/05/2016 22:21

So do you say pi jam ass?

OvO · 02/05/2016 22:25

I say it like Primal.

SalemSaberhagen · 02/05/2016 22:25

When did yoghurt change to yogurt?

OvO · 02/05/2016 22:26

Though whenever I read the pajamas spelling I can't help but say that differently to pyjamas. Paaaaaa- jam-as. Stupid brain.

Pipbin · 02/05/2016 22:27

I would say p jar mus, southern uk.

sooperdooper · 02/05/2016 22:29

Pyjamas and yes oldlaudbooth it's Indian in origin :)

SteamyMcDreamy · 02/05/2016 22:32

I blame it auto correct when we use our iPhones and iPads

aliasjoey · 02/05/2016 22:35

salem the spelling of yoghurt/yogurt is probably the most argued over page on the whole of Wikipedia
