In shops and supermarkets, you go to the till, you pay, you say thanks, goodbye, and then they say 'see you later'!! Why?? Are you coming for tea???

It just seems weird and lazy

Lazy?? Why? I say it because it suggests we are part of the same community! People might LIKE to think they'll see me later.

What would you like them to say? It's a polite way of ending a conversation.

It's neither weird nor lazy. Just retail staff making polite conversation, what a pathetic thing to get uppity about.

Later could be next week, next month. It suggests the hope you come back.

YANBU. I wouldn't go so far as to say I get irritated by this, but I do find it a bit strange.

It's the modern way of saying goodbye that's all. I quite like it - makes me feel I have a lot more friends than I really do and they might all pop round later for tea.

I'd like them to just say 'bye' or 'thanks', or even 'enjoy your day' (although that borders on unreasonable too), it just seems odd to say 'see you later' when they won't!!

It doesn't irritate me at all.

But curiously, what does irritate me is when newsreaders/TV presenters say, "See you tomorrow" etc.

Why get uppity they are just using a much used phrase. Now if they said piss off and don't come back, that's the time to be uppity

I always say it to everyone oh dear! I don't like saying goodbye to anyone because it seems so final and I find it almost morbid (not quite the right word but I can't think of another way of putting it.)

They probably will see you later. Most people shop in the same place each week.

I think it's a northern thing for "See you later" to mean "see you again at some yet to be determined time" rather than "see you later today", which I always expect it to mean.

I have choosing names is right. People say it because it seems less final than 'goodbye'.

What gets me is staff saying, "Do you have a loyalty card at all?". Why "at all"? Either I have one or I don't! (I explained this to a man once, many years ago, & XH said I was lucky not to get decked. I just inwardly fume now)

Perhaps you should seek clarification from anyone who uses this phrase? You could say something like, "If you mean by later some future but unspecified time then, yes, it is very likely that we shall see each other later. However, if you are using later to indicate a point later today then I fear you are in error."

YANBU, but then I hate people saying 'I'm good' in response to the question How are you? I'm not asking for a rundown of your moral state ffs.

I prefer see you later alligator... But that might be due to too many kids :)

I say this all the time. I once said it to the priest who conducted my mum's funeral.

I say "see you next time" to the people in supermarkets, coffee shops &c.

See you later is slang where I come from for goodbye. You don't ACTUALLY expect to see the person later.
