Scrabble sabotage

Tell me honestly - would you find this annoying?

So, DH and I were playing Scrabble last night. Bear in mind that in Scrabble, if you can use all your tiles in one go, you score an extra 50 points. If you can do this a couple of times in one game, you're pretty much guaranteed a victory.

I made the first move.
DH intimates that he has a hand which only needs one extra letter on the board to be able to use all his tiles - thus scoring the bingo - so decides to miss his turn, hoping said letter will appear.
I put down another word.
The letter that DH needs is still not on the board, so he voluntarily misses another go.
This continues for several more rounds - me playing, him missing his go - until its clear that the letter he needs must be one of the more obscure ones, as there are now loads of vowels, Rs, Ds and so on, on the board.

We got to about round 12 before I finally said I'd had enough and couldn't be arsed to continue playing Scrabble by myself. Even if he'd scored his extra 50 points at this point, he wouldn't have caught up with me, so he was just digging his heels in to be... what? Annoying? Stubborn?

So I then went to bed and played Scrabble against a computer on my phone Grin

Was I BU?

ImprobableGirl - go to the App Store and search for "Scrabble free"

The dinner will burn, your children will be neglected, but after a couple of months addiction, you'll be thrashing the pants off anyone who dares take you on.

He was being ridiculous.

DH won't play against me because he can't win. I'd say it's frustrating, but not as frustrating as my ex who could, and often did, beat me, but would decide he didn't want to play anymore and often sabotage a game, if I was beating him.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 28/04/2016 20:40

Words With Friends is a similar word game and also fun.

Poppystellarcat · 28/04/2016 20:41

TheImprobableGirl You need the scrabble app for iPhone. Best £1.49 I spent as I bloody love scrabble. Was reluctant to part with cold hard cash for an app, in fact think this might be the only one I've ever paid for, but it has provided many an hour of entertainment. You can login and play online against real people I believe but I am mostly a very anti social git - and also not on Facebook - and like to play against the computer instead. Grin

Poppystellarcat · 28/04/2016 20:45

Realised I have X posted with others but I reckon the paid scrabble app is worth a go. I tried the free version on an iPad and it pissed me off something chronic. Nowhere near as good.

I may however just be a grumpy git who is stuck in their ways...

AntideluvianCat · 28/04/2016 20:49

There are lots of annoying ads on the free version, so thanks for the tip Poppy.

Ouryve, that is appalling gamesmanship. He should get together with DH.

Just remembered: the other heinous thing he does is just make up words and optimistically chuck them on the board, so I spend all evening looking for non-existant entries in the Scrabble dictionary. Seethe...

I stopped playing with both DH and DBro two years ago when it became clear to me that they both were playing to win, whereas I was playing for fun, for the love of language, for the joy of it wanker alert

They now play each other and I come on MN.

TheImprobableGirl · 28/04/2016 20:55

Will get the iPhone one! Thanks for the tip Smile I paid £3.99 for happy chef yesterday so I can probably stretch to £1.99 for scrabble

TheImprobableGirl · 28/04/2016 20:57

Also- what happens if your dinner is already burned and children are semi feral?

MammaTJ · 28/04/2016 20:59

YWBU. He was playing within the rules of the game, albeit with no chance of winning.

You should have seen it through and shown him his way would not work. That is the only way you would make a decent competitor out of him!

AntideluvianCat · 28/04/2016 21:04

Well, despite being malnourished and shunned from society, they'll at least have picked up some useful vocabulary from you, such as 'caziques', 'zo' and 'muzjiks', - which might get them through an Oxbridge interview.

all you folk who have someone to play scrabble with Envy

TheDuchessOfArbroathsHat · 28/04/2016 21:23

I love Scrabble and I am sadly married to someone who cares not a hooey for the accumulation of words in the way that I do so we don't ever play. I play online with a couple of FB friends and I'm currently on number 4 of a winning streak against someone I can only describe as a genius so I'm feeling pretty damned smug. It won't last. Now excuse me - I've got AMNESIA to put down Grin

TheSnowFairy · 28/04/2016 21:35

I play WWF too. PM me if you'd like a game (although just about to watch Line of Duty on chase so won't be fit for anything for at least 2 hours!)

Aw, LEM. Come and join me, GinThief, Tiggy and Magoria. I'll supply wine and nibbles, and will improvise a fifth rack.

Think I need to find you lot on Words With Friends and Wordfeud.

I think you must both be rubbish at Scrabble and not nearly as good as ME.

MammaTJ · 29/04/2016 21:27

Anyone play words with friends?

youwouldthink · 29/04/2016 21:34

I play on the Scrabble App on Facebook...have been playing for about 7 years. Love it and have made some friends through it :)

WhispersOfWickedness · 29/04/2016 21:38

I play on WordFeud too Smile I tried WordsWithFriends briefly, but found it too colourful and lairy, so I went back to the subdued shades of WF BlushGrin
