To ask a really first world problem question about a ring

DP is buying me a ring (engagement style but without the wedding as neither of us want to get married!). I am very lucky and excited and spend a lot more breastfeeding time googling rings than perhaps I should.

I always thought that if I found someone mental enough to take me on I would want a classic solitaire on platinum. But... more and more I keep looking at fancy diamonds, esp pink ones (I am looking at vintage/pre-owned, this isn't a £100,000 stealth boast!).

AIBU to think that would be quite pretty and a bit different?

Or are coloured stones a bit tacky and would I regret it in a few years' time?

And if you have an engagement or other ring, how did you choose (or did your partner choose it him/herself)?

Sorry for the first world problem, I'm just very happy and excited! Grin

I love purple AND my birthstone not that I believe anything to do that though is amethyst.
So I chose a gorgeous amethyst set.
I didn't exactly intend to, I just saw it and fell in love with it.

I think the diamond trade is horrid and would much prefer a previously owned diamond if I had to have one.

Eminybob · 27/04/2016 11:45

If you find a ring you love, go for it. If you get bored of it you can get your DP to buy you another on an anniversary Wink

I always thought I wanted a classic solitaire engagement ring but I actually ended up choosing a cluster ring because I fell in love with it. I still love it now, 8 years on and have no regrets.

Cutecat78 · 27/04/2016 11:51

I have an emerald with 6 little diamonds I just love it it's so pretty and different.

I find solitaire rings a bit boring tbh and they have only been "tradition" since the De Beers marketing campaign in the late 1930s and then then introduced the "Diamonds are Forever" slogan in the 40s to push up diamond sales after the Great Depression Smile

That amethyst ring is gorgeous. Find a ring you like and get that, balls to fashion or people thinking it tack or whatever. I personally love coloured stones and when me and dp cross that bridge ill be looking at anything purple or blue.

ClubTropicanaDrinks · 27/04/2016 11:55

My engagement ring is a sapphire (blue) and I love it.

My husband found four rings that he liked and then I picked one from his selection. So he can say he chose it but I also had an element of choice.

Of course this was after I described in great detail exactly what I wanted......... Grin

Vixxfacee · 27/04/2016 11:56

I don't like coloured rings they looks tacky.

NapQueen · 27/04/2016 11:59

I have a dark blue sapphire with a diamond either side. I adore it.

Have you had a look on Pinterest? My younger sister covets a vintage/art deco style ring and pins some wonderful stuff.

NapQueen · 27/04/2016 12:01

Heres some of the stuff she has pinned. Not to everyones taste, but I think they are beautiful!

I like some coloured stones.

Not coloured but if I were to get a new one I would love this.

Coloured stones are not tacky but solitaire diamonds are very common.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 27/04/2016 12:27

napqueen those are gorgeous!

I don't love coloured stones particularly but if you do, go for one :) dp and i have agreed that when we get engaged we'll go shopping together to find something we both love.

caffeine99 · 27/04/2016 12:36

I have to disagree that coloured rings are tacky.

I always knew I didn't want a traditional engagement ring.

Red is my favourite colour so I hAve a dark red ruby with small diamonds on either side.

My ring was made just for me and I selected the ruby myself. I like that it's unusual and that I've never seen anyone else with a similar ring.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 27/04/2016 12:39

I'd never have a plain diamond, they don't appeal to me. If they don't appeal to you, rock your colours. Enjoy:)

HerRoyalNotness · 27/04/2016 12:40

biene that ring is so pretty!

KDS0401 · 27/04/2016 12:42

If you're looking for something a bit different, try these people, I can recommend them from personal experience :) Note they only sell "conflict free" diamonds

I have a vintage engagement ring from the 1920s with rubies and diamonds on it. I love coloured stones and don't think they look tacky at all.

SnakesandKnives · 27/04/2016 12:47

From a work standpoint......I reckon 95% of the engagement rings we do are white diamond only....its so nice to do something different :)

The two amethyst rings are beautiful - love the cut on yours carabos :)

MitzyLeFrouf · 27/04/2016 12:50

Diamond rings are so boring. I adore rubies and emeralds and garnets too.
