To ask a really first world problem question about a ring

DP is buying me a ring (engagement style but without the wedding as neither of us want to get married!). I am very lucky and excited and spend a lot more breastfeeding time googling rings than perhaps I should.

I always thought that if I found someone mental enough to take me on I would want a classic solitaire on platinum. But... more and more I keep looking at fancy diamonds, esp pink ones (I am looking at vintage/pre-owned, this isn't a £100,000 stealth boast!).

AIBU to think that would be quite pretty and a bit different?

Or are coloured stones a bit tacky and would I regret it in a few years' time?

And if you have an engagement or other ring, how did you choose (or did your partner choose it him/herself)?

Sorry for the first world problem, I'm just very happy and excited! Grin

i got engaged three weeks ago and picked out my ring with DP, its a small classic Emerald cut tiffany, really simple but stunning. I knew i didnt want a solitaire as they just dont appeal, and i loved the difference of a pear or emerald cut. Ive had so many compliments on how elegant it is and a nice change from solitaires.

Must say i absolutely adored the canary yellow diamonds they had but god they were expensive!!!! If i had the money i would've chosen one though as they are so different and pretty!

its your ring, you have to look at it every day so go with what you want, everyones taste is different. Have fun choosing, me and DP loved that we got to share the experience together it was so much fun and meant alot to us :)

Voodoolooloo
They look like sapphires and diamonds. It is a very pretty ring. So sorry about your loss. It will be very special to you.

I didn't have an engagement ring but I received an unusual box one Christmas and in it was granny's engagement ring. I've mislaid at the moment and I am devastated. I moved it because we had workmen in and now I can't find the safe place I put it. I have my mum's too but she never liked it. I only wear them on special occasions.

romina · 28/04/2016 10:52

I bought various secondhand diamond rings on eBay, then had them and the gold recycled into a custom made one a bit like a Boodles raindance, but split into two parts so it doesn't have to be so bling.
No way I could have afforded it new.
But coloured stones aren't tacky!

Ditsy4 · 28/04/2016 10:53

Oops.

OP buy the one you love or you will regret it. Never mind what anyone else thinks go with your gut instinct when you see them. By the way I think they are very pretty. Especially the first. Remember they look different on. I have small hands and big rings look awful on me. DH eventually bought me a sapphire and with tiny diamonds either side. It is very dainty and I love it even though I had asked for an eternity ring a stone for each child.

Falling270 · 28/04/2016 10:57

I love pink rings I like most coloured stones to be honest.

My fiancé chose my ring himself and chose a classic diamond on white gold- I absolutely love it! Maybe I just love all sparkly things...

Don't be afraid to choose something a bit different you love.

ppandj · 28/04/2016 11:07

Have you had a look at Morganite? It's beautiful!

I recently had trouble with my engagement ring and had to choose another. The original was very, very dainty and the diamonds came out of the shoulder setting twice. I have chosen a more sturdy shoulder setting for the replacement ring. Just something to consider when you're shopping Smile

voodoolooloo · 28/04/2016 11:25

Thank* you ditsy.* I hope you find your ring to.
OP any more thoughts? ( I'm plumping for that gorgeous emerald pictured above)

Lots of love for coloured stones! I think they were much more popular in the 80's and 90's, then it became all about the solitaire - and now it's going back the other way.

I know brown diamonds that were once only used in an industrial capacity have benefited massively from a rebrand - apparently jewellers now call them "chocolate" or "champagne" and it's really helped sales.

I like the idea of a vintage or ore owned one but am so excited about going to try on lots of different types. It's a one off once in a lifetime thing!

Some really helpful questions to consider here thanks!!

I think this is beautiful - if I could find one like this (or with a canary yellow diamond), I'd be in love

On the non coloured diamonds I like this sort of style - but then I also love the Art Deco baguette and emerald cut ones too...

Noob, have a look at EidelPrecious, they have loads of lovely rings with coloured stones:

Rosado's Box make very pretty morganite rings: www.etsy.com/shop/RosadosBox?section_id=11407244

If you want an ethical alternative to diamonds, have a look at moissanites (equally durable and sparkly and much cheaper as well): www.moissaniteco.com/forever-one-moissanite-engagement-rings-1-c-311_312_313.html

kittensandgin · 28/04/2016 13:44

Personally I would love to get a right hand ring with a large coloured stone at some point. Absolutely love this very unusual modern amethyst ring!

madamcholet I'll be gutted if your ring is identical to mine - it's supposed to be a one-off Shock. It is gorgeous though. Love a big coloured stone no matter how tacky Wink.

Baconyum · 28/04/2016 13:58

Not heard of morganite before it's gorgeous! I think get what you like and stuff what others think. I've had 3 engagement rings, first a solitaire (chosen by him lovely but kinda boring) and 2 sapphire and diamond. My grandmothers and mum all had coloured rings and they were gorgeous and had meaning for them.

idontlikealdi · 28/04/2016 14:20

If I was doing it all again, which I'm hopefully not going to, I would have an emerald.

ateapotandacake · 28/04/2016 14:24

Have whatever you like! And what he would like for you a little, maybe? My fella popped the question because he'd knocked me up last year and produced an amazing emerald and white gold ring from his pocket. I had always said emerald but fancied a vintage Art Deco thing, he however decided he wanted us to have matching wedding rings eventually and doesn't like gold gold so when he picked he went for a new white one in an Art Deco-Y style. And it's lovely that he chose what he'd thought I'd like, taking my ideas and making them ours if that makes sense? vomit

I have a sapphire so obviously I don't think coloured stones are tacky, but I do think the 'classic' precious stones are the way to go- emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds. The benefit of buying those stones is that diamonds only became popular in the 30's (De Beers) so there are some truly gorgeous antique options on the market, and you often get a lot more for your money.

(And, diamonds are actually a really common gemstone- they're only so expensive because De Beers control most of what's on the market. I have an amazing Burmese sapphire that looks cornflower blue in the sun and a deep inky blue by candlelight. It's much, much rarer than any bog-standard diamond you'd find at Ernest Jones.)

stumblymonkey · 28/04/2016 14:29

You should go for what you love OP, the important thing is that you absolutely love it...

My two favourites both have coloured stones...

Also- only 50% of my friends have diamonds- all solitaries. The other 50% have gorgeous antique rings with coloured stones that are all really unique.

PotterBot · 28/04/2016 14:35

Mooey that is my ring!!! Morganite?

PotterBot · 28/04/2016 14:37
