Giving things fancy names...

We've been soldiering through a bit of a financial tight spot for some time now, so to cheer ourselves up, we have a running family in-joke of giving things fancy names to make whatever it is sound better than the tiresomely penny-pinching reality. For instance, we're going for the discounted ugly fruit and veg so we call it "artisan produce". Most of our clothes are coming from charity shops and village hall sales at the moment so we describe them as "free-range clothes". And we have a crappy corner of the garden that is almost impossible to mow, so we've given up trying and now call it the "meadow". It could have a trolley carcass in there by now for all I know.

Am I alone in this? Anyone have any other little gems that I might shamelessly steal?

Ooo inner lobby get you.

wiccamum · 23/04/2016 20:13

We have some weedy fruit trees at the bottom of the garden- 2 apples, a damson and a plum (and a rusty trampoline)- we call that "the orchard". The front garden is known as the "public gardens" and the 2 foot by 4 foot bit of decking by the back door is the "sun terrace" 😄

Another user of Matt Allen here, with a posh emphasis on the Ahhhhhllen .
T-esco too, with an accent.

I have a walk in wardrobe, actually a cupboard which most of the other houses here have converted to a third box room!

Charity shop clothes, combined with your existing wardrobe, upcycling surely! Smile

Well, my very small house has tripled in magnificence within a matter of hours. The bloody useless built-in wine rack corner is now a wine cellar. Our cherry tree, apple tree sapling, and generic berry-bush even the birds won't touch is now an orchard (an orchard, a meadow and a herb garden - not bad for a postage-stamp sized property!). And our tumble dryer is in the garage so that's clearly a laundry annex.

Thank you all. The tedium of minding every penny and still making very little headway can get a bit soul destroying, so it's nice to be a bit ridiculous sometimes. You've cheered me up immensely.

Back to the drawing room for some lowbrow literature.

Ooh. Can my bird table be a wild life sanctuary?

megletthesecond · 23/04/2016 20:54

I like to think of the back porch as a boot room.

ForTheSakeOfFuck · 23/04/2016 20:59

liinyo It not only can. I think it must. How else will the birds know to enjoy it properly?

We have to disguise words for food items if we are talking about what to have for tea or something otherwise our toddler hears and gets upset that she can't have them now! This means we use a lot of French words for food which makes it sound really fancy - poisson et pommes frites, pommes aux fromage etc

ForTheSakeOfFuck · 23/04/2016 21:11

Oh, purple, have I ever missed a trick!! We've been spelling things out. My god, to think I could look up the Latin for chicken nuggets and chips…

(So according to the internet, for dinner the DCs had "pullum frusta et radix legumina". Wink)

Aawww, what cheerful people you are OP! Lovely!

You could have a pot of plant on windowsill and call it "The Orangery"

Pigeonpost · 23/04/2016 21:48

Radix legumina! Awesome!!!

dodobookends · 23/04/2016 21:51

We have a scabby bit of bumpy grass lawn, and a titchy box room full of old guitars music room.

Daffodil90 · 23/04/2016 21:54

Lol we still call Argos Argoose after that advert years ago. And Pri-Marni, we use that one too!
An umbrella is a bumber shoot (Frasier fans will get that one) and deodorant is BO basher Wink

TowerRavenSeven · 23/04/2016 21:57

I do this too! I clean regular vegetables with veggie wash and proclaim them 'organic', charity shops are 'boutiques', if asked where I bought a certain piece of clothing or shoes and its from a department store I'll tell them "a little shop I found", etc.

ivykaty44 · 23/04/2016 22:02

My dad has a very old campervan and it has three bedrooms, a library ( book cupboard) upstairs bedroom ( Luton over cab) kitchenette with fabulous views ( depends where it's parked) an ensuite bathroom to the master bedroom. He doesn't have a garage - but he does have an attic room ( large box on roof)

charleyfarleysaunt · 23/04/2016 22:02

A few years ago, I was over the moon to be told by a lovely friend that we'd be nipping in for a shopping session at a new to me (I thought) place called Prix Marché... ah well, at least we now have a new family name for good ol' Primark!

Wastinmylifeaway · 23/04/2016 22:03

My kids wear designer clothes - the designer is George, said in a French accent. Yes, George at Asda!

I also have a herb garden (planter with some mint and chives in) and a walk in wardrobe (well it's a standard wardrobe and as I'm only 5 foot 1 I can walk into it...)

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/04/2016 22:09

ForTheSake

Any time you drink alcohol just call it a "wine tasting session"

exLtEveDallas · 23/04/2016 22:10

DH has a workshop (shed full of tools)
DD has a playhouse (shed full of toys)
And I have a storage room (shed full of junk)

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/04/2016 22:11

And you really ought to address the person brining the wine in the room a "sommelier"

backtowork2015 · 23/04/2016 22:11

Our garage conversion is the 'parlour'. It's a cosy lounge adjacent to the kitchen, what else could it be?

Doinmummy · 23/04/2016 22:12

I have an Italian sunken garden (bit of lawn that dips lower than the rest with dandelions growing in it)
