Or not?

And what are your reasons? :)

Nope

bolleauxnouveau · 22/04/2016 00:46

get rid - we consider ourselves a democracy, our head of state should be chosen by the people.

Fanjango · 22/04/2016 00:47

No. They are part of the out dated and anachronistic system. It's flawed and needs a complete overhaul. Out with the monarchy, no need for a president. Reform parliament, especially the lords, electoral reform and open all Royal estates fully to the public for the revenue. We don't need a king or queen to make money from the past, just need people to have access to it

Tiggeryoubastard · 22/04/2016 00:54

Get rid. France does ok for tourism and they don't have a ruling family. I wouldn't wish the French way of disposing of them though. And they'd have to prove what actually belongs to them rather than the country before they could take it with them.
I used to think they were the lesser of two evils - president Blair, anyone? But at least a president would have a fixed term and could be voted out.
I'd definitely change the 'national' anthem, as it isn't! It's an anthem of the Monarch. Means bugger all to me.

MangoMoon · 22/04/2016 00:54

People still go to France to see the Eiffel Tower without there being a monarch in France.

The French monarchy was abolished around 100 yrs before the Eiffel Tower was built.

Odd comparison to make...

HildaOgdensMuriel · 22/04/2016 00:59

Yes , because what would the alternative be..

And I was surprised to just hear Ken Livingstone say the same thing on This Week!

Bogeyface · 22/04/2016 01:01

Get rid.

I resent that people with actual jobs will be forced to sign on because Call Me Dave has decided that they are not working hard enough, but the biggest bunch of fucking scroungers in the world are given millions purely on the basis of who their parents/grandparents/greatgrandparents etc etc were.

Bogeyface · 22/04/2016 01:03

Mango its not odd at all. It proves that monarchy is not central to tourism, which is an argument many Royalists use.

The fact that so many people visit a national monument that didnt even exist when the monarchy of that country was abolished proves it very well!

derxa · 22/04/2016 03:06

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when someone tells Carol Middleton her daughter isn't going to be Queen after all...
Would you really? Confused

derxa · 22/04/2016 03:14

They don’t seem to be very well educated/intelligent. And I don’t recall much focus on science and engineering, which is what actually made Britain great Well you could say that about quite a few of our elected MPs.

herecomethepotatoes · 22/04/2016 03:49

Keep. I love having a figurehead.

If the British monarchy were abandoned, so many laws and aspects of democracy in our country would have to be re-written. I don't think most of the 'no' people understand just how much the ruling monarch is enshrined into law.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 22/04/2016 04:23

The French monarchy was abolished around 100 yrs before the Eiffel Tower was built.

Or the Palace of Versailles which is far more popular than any British Royal Palace.

Mousefinkle · 22/04/2016 07:05

I'd get rid and send them all to live in an overcrowded council house and live on min wage.

I don't think it's a true democracy with an unelected head of state. They don't bring in as much revenue as people think considering the amount they cost. People would still come to London without them, it hardly affected Versailles did it.

AlMinzerAndHisPyramidOfDogs · 22/04/2016 07:06

they should be de-throned.
once the queen goes, i reckon the shit will hit the fan anyway.

abbieanders · 22/04/2016 07:07

Now in fairness, you have to really gave the majesty glasses on to describe the queen, at any point in her life, as breathtakingly beautiful. The effect of royal worship is extraordinary.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/04/2016 07:39

I'd vote to get rid. In a heart beat.

I think they are a total anachronism and hardly do our image as an innovative, modern meritocracy much good. I think they represent and remind us that the UK is a hide bound conservative bastion of privilege. And that we should all know our place.

I want to be a citizen, not a subject.

I'd like to have a figurehead who has achieved something through their own hard work and talent, not as an accident of birth.

I'd like the U.K. To join the 20th century with a view to moving into the 21st in due course.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/04/2016 07:42

And I see the tired old "they bring in revenue" argument has been trotted out. Why? How? I've never ever once seen that argument backed up with fact.

The tourists would still come to look at Buckingham palace even if we didn't have a royal head of state. Many Americans refer to her as "the queen of England" anyway so it's hardly as if they have a firm grasp of the finer points of our constitution anyway

AimUnder · 22/04/2016 07:44

No, definitely get rid of monarchy.

It is so outdated. Why should they have privilege just because they were born into a family?

AimUnder · 22/04/2016 07:47

The royal family is extremely wealthy. They should fund themselves. Not a penny of tax payer money should go towards funding them.

AimUnder · 22/04/2016 07:49

More tourists would come if they get to see the inside of all these castles and estates the royal family currently live in.

LettingAgentNightmare · 22/04/2016 07:56

What really makes me laugh is the President Blair argument which gets trotted out but those who can't think for themselves.

You know the really radical thing about a democracy? If by terrible accident we ended up with a President we didn't like or who did a crappy job, we could get rid of them. I know. Shocking. We wouldn't actually have to stick with them for 60 odd years until they died.

sugarfreepolo · 22/04/2016 07:56

think they've been great ambassadors for the UK. i think the monarchy works. not sure about all the hangers on though i suppose the civil list is out there somewhere for us to see..

i really liked the bbc programme last night, it did show how hard she has worked and travelled throughout her reign, i just think abolishing the monarcy would be right now anyway

KidLorneRoll · 22/04/2016 07:58

Get rid. An undemocratic waste of space.

sugarfreepolo · 22/04/2016 08:01

would not!

MephistophelesApprentice · 22/04/2016 08:05

Vote for the Queen? If fight for the crown.
