To know more than supermarket staff

In typical middle class way, I was shopping in waitrose today, fancied a treat (dairy free due to smallest ones allergies) and I'm stood musing in the chocolate aisle.
Bigger son comes up and asks what I'm looking at, i reply I'm choosing my vegan chocolate darling.
Nice looking shop assistant steps over (to help I assume) and says it sorry we don't do vegan chocolate.
Yes you do, I reply, that one, that one, that one (pointing at the relatively large range) I'm just trying to choose. Oh, she replies. I don't think they are vegan.... So of course I have to prove her wrong, showing her the vegan stamps and ingredients. Then she says 'well they must have come in on my day off yesterday'.

Now, I am the last person to back down in a fight so I get it, but what happened to the customer is always right? (Which I was, obviously) I know Iabu to think a supermarket assistant will know all the stock in the place, and I feel I've done my bit to educate, but now feel like a right showy offy know it all! But seriously, she shouldn't have bothered saying anything if she had nothing helpful to say!

The customer is not always right. The one shouting at the girl in Monsoon today because an item was out of stock certainly wasn't.

Perhaps she was trying to help you to make sure you didn't eat something you shouldn't?

Sparkling Thorntons Viennese truffles are a crime against chocolate! YABVU!

Sparklingbrook · 18/04/2016 20:57

They are the only ones I like but only on special occasions. Grin

Now the talk of chocolate is very damaging. I have type 1 diabetes (emphasis on the type 1 ) so I can only have diabetic choc in small amounts. Its got sorbitol or some such in it and that stuff has laxative properties so just a square if I dare.
Vegan or not doesn't matter when you cant have it. Sad

Yeah, it does. The standard Dairyfine plain chocolate is. How could you not know something that somebody else does? Wink

The customer is always right. Sometimes confused, misinformed, rude, stubborn, changeable, complete bellend and even downright stupid but never wrong.

The other point is that often 'free from' foods change their ingredients, so things that were once vegan stop being vegan and things that used to contain gluten get turned gluten free etc. Unless you're someone regularly dealing with particular products you won't know what the manufacturer has done most recently to the recipe. So, the sales assistant may well have been right a month ago, that all of their chocolate contained or potentially contained dairy products.

Alexa444 Spot on. I work in retail it's nice to know we are appreciated sometimes. Although the store i work in is quite small and most of our regulars are lovely we do get quite a few arseholes who are not keen on being asked for i.d. It's not my rule i personally don't care if you want to smoke or drink but it's my job on the line if you'r not legally old enough to buy it. If i sold an age related product to someone under age we would lose our license and as cigs and alcohol are a major part of our sales we could theoretically closed down. Sorry slightly offthread but customers wind me up something rotten.

Lol OP, glad you got to feel a wee bit middle class and 'lofty'.

At work today, my (probably wc) chef noted that I was the first person to recognise baba ganoush when he noted that warheads dip was. I work in a high paying industry....

BuggersMuddle · 18/04/2016 21:37

Jeebus- I was one of the few who recognised what he meant by baba ganoush
