Holiday by myself..

CraigRevelHorwoodsPetCat · 18/04/2016 17:48

So just thinking of booking a wee week away somewhere by myself. Thinking Spain or Cyprus. I'm going on a girl's holiday in August - which will be the usual; drinking too much and barely seeing sunlight.

I am overworked. I am exhausted. I need to disappear for a week with books and some lovely weather.

However, will I look really odd by myself? I don't mind the travelling on the plane and to destination aspect. I'm just wondering about eating out at night by myself. I'll probably end up back in my room at 8pm every night

Would you do it?

I did a gulet cruise with solo holidays when I got divorced. Only 10 of us on the boat, beautiful food included, plenty of privacy or company if we wanted it. It was one of the best holidays of my life, total peace, no pressure to do anything, lazing around in the sun and swimming off the boat. Not much luggage allowed and no need for dressing up. I fell in love with Turkey that summer.

I love how supportive everyone is. Except Penelope. I didn't quite get Penelope's post. As I was in the bath, dreaming of solo sunbathing and reading all of the books.

It's actually lovely to see how many people do/would love to travel alone. I genuinely thought I was being peculiar Grin I can be all about the culture; I've been to Auschwitz, I've contributed to the building of a school outside Mombasa - but it's just I need to be self indulgent and I need to laze about.

And I know if I book a few days off work - I'll just end up doing the housework and finding things to do. And lying in your own bed doesn't quite have the same appeal.

Thanks so much everyone. I will be sure to let you know how I get on

Charlie I love Turkey. I know it gets a lot of stick on here; especially Marmaris. But there really is nowhere else like it in the world. I'd go back tomorrow..in fact; I may price it now

I live in a beach town in the Algarve, and wouldn't look twice at someone eating on their own - and I came over on my own for a short break, before we decided to move over. The staff in the bars and restaurants are very friendly and will have a chat if they're not run off their feet!

I did it 10 years ago - Italy. I had a great time and still remember it fondly Smile

Craig do it, you won't regret it, sheer bliss. All you need is a couple of bikinis, a pair of shorts and a pair of sandals in case you can be arsed to get off the boat, and loads of books!

When I travel alone, I do really like to be able to people watch. I love having a lazy coffee in a busking square, or eating lunch overlooking a beach or similar.

warm weather + people watching = bliss!

Craig I was looking at Turkey earlier out of sheer curiosity to see what the last minute deals are like.

Jet2holidays were doing 5* AI from £350 in the next few weeks. I'm tempted (current situation doesn't put me off, especially if it's a flop in the sun, eat and drink hol in a resort) but don't know anything about where is nice for a holiday and we don't really have the time to spare at the moment.

It would be for DP and I (early 40s, no DCs, like good local food, sunbathing, swimming in the sea, scuba diving, lazing around and reading) and we would want the equivalent resorts to Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca, or Playa Blanca Lanzarote, not Magaluf or Benidorm IYKWIM.

We usually do B&B or SC as we like to go for a wander to local restaurants in the evening (I don't like buffets for dinner and want to eat outside if it is warm).

I went to Turkey on my onesie. Well technically not as it turned out I was pg with ds1 when I went. It was very relaxing. Not had a holiday abroad since then so I'd defo say go for it.

Learn important phrases tho for things like hospital, police, etc just in case you do need them. I took a sheet with them on but thankfully never needed it.

Go for it! :)

I usually go to the carribean once a year get a huge room do not have to share the shower. Space to dry any washing I might do

Go for it, spend some quality time with nurturing yourself and who cares about eating by yourself. As long as your happy it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Me personally i like traveling with others. I do get quiet lonely when am by myself so i find having some good company with me always make me feel good and having someone you know with you who you can talk to always makes it even better. But that's just me if you feel you want to go alone why not!

I went to Gran Canaria by myself in March. I hired a bike, did a bit of cycling, then sat by the pool and read and was in bed for 10 every night. I really loved it.

Would I do it myself? Absolutely 100% not. I'm very confident and sure if myself, so it's not that aspect that would stop me. Instead it is how unappealing it would be to me. A good book, I need to discuss. A fantastic meal, I need to share. A beautiful view, I need to gaze at with someone by my side. I have always been like this. It can't be any old person. But a lover, family or friend.

Sounds like heaven books and a sun bed and not having to please anyone. I'm an only child too and love my own company I know some people think I'm strange but I'm happy alone. Jealous Smile

Craig
If you love Turkey have you thought of Northern Cyprus? Girne formerly called Kyrenia is beautiful. Have PMd you with a lovely, Brit-owned, peaceful, shady place to stay with a swimming pool in a walled garden.

I love going on hols on my own too.

I've went abroad a few times alone when i was in my twenties as i got more holidays from work than my friends did.
I really enjoyed it, but i enjoy my own company, it is so relaxing doing exactly as you please!
I have been married for 24 year and still take a city break alone a few times a year, my DH has his hobbies and that is mine.
I always feel refreshed and relaxed afterwards.
Go out for meals though, don't sit in your hotel, its only food after all and we all need to eat.

I go sailing in the Greek Islands on a "share a yacht" scheme but part of a flotilla so there is none of the awkwardness of being a solo traveller and all the fun of sailing, sun, sea and lots and lots of social occasions in the evenings.

I am off sailing to the Sparodes this year, taking in the "Mama Mia" island on the way.

Last time I went sailing, I came back having lost half a stone, toned up like mad and that was after eating and drinking myself silly.

Id do it. I would probably want to stay on a resort where they spoke English though just in case anything happened.

Do it, do, do it! Grin if you need to recharge your batteries there is no better way than a solo holiday. First time I did it, I went on a yoga/wellness program in an isolated Eco resort in Mexico. It was fantastic. Re eating alone, I knew all the waiters first names by the end of the week and they always kept the best table for me. I did not feel lonely or a weirdo for one second.
