Being a witness and I wasn't there.

Basically my friend had a bump right outside my work. He's admitted it was his fault and is gutted because he's already got another claim pending because his wife crashed their car a few months back.

He's said to the insurance that the bloke was going fast but he wasn't and they've asked if there were a camera or a witness. Now he's given them my name!

I wasn't even there and didn't see it and am a bit annoyed to be honest. He's done me so many favours in the past and I don't know how to tell him I'm not happy with this.

If you say you saw something when you weren't there, can you be found out?
The place I work has key fobs on all doors for fire safety (and keeping tabs on smoke breaks) so it is known where we are at all times.
Maybe a gentle let down for your friend?

Why don't you want him to fall out with you? He sounds like he doesn't have much respect for you, if he's asking you to break the law. I'd let the friendship die off if it were me.

Someone did this to me once (although in a different context, not insurance). I just said 'sorry, I wasn't there and didn't see it happen, I only know what X told me'. It all went away and the person hasn't ever mentioned it to me again.

That aside, you can't be a witness to something that you didn't see!

If he has admitted fault, isn't that that?

I'd haily defriend someone who would even ask me to do this, let alone be pissy if I refused!

Perjury is a serious offence that you can be sent to prison for. I'd rather lose a friend than gain a criminal record.

Could you say that you already have a serious conviction and are not allowed to be a witness in any court in the UK. Then every time you see him just open your eyes really wide at him, and stare.
If he attempts any conversations, just say "I've done my time, I've paid the price" or other random quote loudly and hopefully he will just back away from you.

I'd be furious if someone set me up to commit a criminal offence - that person is not a friend.

Never, ever, ever do this for anyone. The consequences are extremely serious.

I live by the simple rule, try to do the right thing. This is not the right thing.

Lose the 'friend.'
