SUPERBLY entitled parenting

We went to a classic car show today. The cars there, if you like that sort of thing, were a delight, and most are the utter pride and joy of their owners. The site was fully tarmaced, there was catering and a picnic area etc. Usually scooters aren't allowed. Or skateboards, or roller skates. But on the next table to us, was a dad, uncle and two wee boys, both on micro scooters. The dad let the boys weave in and out between the cars, and the owners looked like they might throw up.

A security guard was summoned, and he politely explained that scooters weren't allowed. But the dad argued and argued that he had checked with security on the gate, and his two boys WERE allowed. As he was arguing, they both crashed into the back of a mint Triumph Herald. All he had to do was to keep the kids away from the cars. There was MILES of space to play (it's held at an airfield so literally miles) but no, he carried on letting them whiz up and down in the narrow gaps between the parked cars. The owner of a convertible E type Jag drive it away in frustration, with the dad harrumphing that his boys had the "right" to play there. What a dick.

There should be a total ban on scooters inside. WFT is with people scooting in shopping centers and supermarkets and libraries etc?

Parenting has swung too far to '100% about me and my child' and too far away from 'what is best for society'. Unfortunately its the little darlings that are going to have to live in a totally selfish society.

MissBattleaxe · 18/04/2016 17:20

I agree with a ban. I don;t know why places don't put signs up. Scooters are recreational and there's a time and a place for that. I would like see No Scooter and No Heelies signs up everywhere except parks.

YouTheCat · 18/04/2016 17:29

I'd like to see more people having the balls to tell children to get off their scooters in shops.

SlinkyVagabond · 18/04/2016 17:32

Ds works the booze aisle in our local supermarket. He has been known to growl at little angels who dare to enter his domain on a scooter or heelies. (Yes they are banned, but parents seem to have selective vision when it comes to signs)

That dad sounds like an idiot. Surprised they were allowed in with scooters.

Scooters on the Tube or anywhere in London baffles me. Just, why? Just say 'No kids, scooters on the train and underground is a really terrible idea and everyone else will hate you and us and it'll totally ruin our day'.

Plus mine scoot so quickly I have to do a scurrying kind of trot to keep up with them, which makes me look foolish enough in the park or on the way there.

The end.

My friend met up in central London with a friend who had let her smallish son (maybe three years old) let him bring his bike with him because he liked riding it....around and around and in and out of closely packed tables and knocking people flying according to my friend.

So many parents on here say their kids are safe because they only scoot next to them at walking pace. What's the point then, just bloody walk!

I think the point is that some parents walk twice as fast as a five-year-old, so not using scooters means taking twice times as long to get to (say) school.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/04/2016 13:31

I think some parents actually like their kids doing this sort of thing - compare parents gaily letting their kids stamp and trample all over spring flowers in parks. They almost want someone to say something, so they can enjoy a confrontation.

I had an acquaintance like this once - you could see her secretly smiling to herself when her kids were doing something she knew would hack other people off - she really enjoyed a good row. Same woman told my dd at only 5 that there was no Father Christmas. I responded by saying that X had probably been so naughty when she was little that FC never came, so no wonder she didn't believe in him.

And since dd had seen X in full blown eff and blind mode, it worked beautifully.

Whois - you're right on the money there.

Gettinglikemymother - I also know someone like this. Horrible people.

I used to clean cars in the school holidays and it was hard bloody work. The salesmen NEVER allowed children near the cars. I visited a new car showroom for the first time for years with a friend a few weeks ago. I was appalled to see parents letting their little darlings climb all over the cars - in AND out!

I asked a salesman why they allowed it and he said they keep cameras on the cars at all times in case kids hurt themselves. They don't want to be sued for accidents clearly not their fault, but the fault of the parents. As for the mess they make, well, they have to suck it up - all it means is less discounts overall as the costs to keep cars in a showroom is higher.

He also said they hate it as they do have to confront parents for damage more than something that can be cleaned. They also hate seeing the "entitleds" coming through the doors!

I have no idea why there are so many full of themselves people out there these days. Where has parenting gone so wrong and where/when will it stop? What happened to common sense?

SimpleSimonThePieMan · 19/04/2016 19:54

I have a 55 year old classic, it is in concours condition. As you can imagine, it cost a lot of money to get it that way. We go to quite a few shows over the summer. I'm surprised the dad wasn't force fed the scooters to be honest!

Was reminded of this thread earlier. Late appointment with the doctors and had to nip into a shop to get milk.
Someone's lad was riding his bike in the entrance of the shop near the freezer! (said shop has an offer freezer at the entrance).
Thank goodness it was late and quite!
