SUPERBLY entitled parenting

We went to a classic car show today. The cars there, if you like that sort of thing, were a delight, and most are the utter pride and joy of their owners. The site was fully tarmaced, there was catering and a picnic area etc. Usually scooters aren't allowed. Or skateboards, or roller skates. But on the next table to us, was a dad, uncle and two wee boys, both on micro scooters. The dad let the boys weave in and out between the cars, and the owners looked like they might throw up.

A security guard was summoned, and he politely explained that scooters weren't allowed. But the dad argued and argued that he had checked with security on the gate, and his two boys WERE allowed. As he was arguing, they both crashed into the back of a mint Triumph Herald. All he had to do was to keep the kids away from the cars. There was MILES of space to play (it's held at an airfield so literally miles) but no, he carried on letting them whiz up and down in the narrow gaps between the parked cars. The owner of a convertible E type Jag drive it away in frustration, with the dad harrumphing that his boys had the "right" to play there. What a dick.

My dad has a MG. Getting the bumper re-chromed was quite a big deal. He is a loving father and grandfather but he wouldn't have put up with scooter brats for a split second.

Oh my days it's a unanimous thread!Grin

Shock A Triumph Herald! My Triumph-obsessed father would have cried at such damage.

YANBU. As a parent of a car lover (and quite fond myself), I can see many classic car shows in our future. We have been to a couple. I wouldn't dream of letting the DCs take their scooters! But some parents think the world revolves around their children. I can't stand fucking heelys either! Every time we go to watch DCs swimming lessons, we have to contend with children in the bloody things wheeling up and down the walkways.

If a child is on wheels or any sort they should be in a park, end of. Same goes for parents letting their children ride scooters to and from school, on narrow pavements, where lots of other parents and children are walking. One mum gets on the electric scooter with her 2 children and whizzes past, she nearly knocks someone over every time because she doesn't have control of the bloody thing.

MaidOfStars · 17/04/2016 20:08

I once witnessed a Dad encourage his two small boys onto the bonnet of a Lambo Murciélago so he could take pictures of them - I've never seen a car owner move so quickly and angrily

AuntJane · 17/04/2016 20:12

We used to take vehicles to classic car shows. We stopped when we found children's footprints on the seats.

ollieplimsoles · 17/04/2016 20:19

MaidOfStars

I bought DH one of those driver experiences for his birthday and it was in a Murcielgo.

While we were waiting for it and watching the other cars go round the track, a couple came up and laid their little baby on the bonnet of the car and started taking pictures!

pigsDOfly · 17/04/2016 20:20

My first car was a Triumph Herald.

Why would you even take a scooter to such a show? Idiot.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 17/04/2016 20:29

Even if the scooters were allowed in the car show, what twat would let their child career about near cars with them anyway? In fact I wouldn't have let go of my children anywhere near the cars in case they got sticky handprints on them or managed to scratch them with the zip of their jacket or whatever.

VagueButlmportant · 17/04/2016 20:36

My dad's got a classic Triumph Herald. 1967. British Racing Green.

It's bloody gorgeous.

I dread to think what he'd have had to say about this. He's not overly fond of small children at the best of times!

coffeeisnectar · 17/04/2016 20:36

YANBU. Your dh is though. How dare he stop you eavesdropping? Train him up fgs!

serin · 17/04/2016 20:38

I stopped a kid on a scooter hurtling down a corridor in our hospital, his Mum said he had an injured ankle and it helped him get around.

I pointed her in the direction of our wheelchairs, (we have porters if she couldn't push it) and explained that there would be a lot more injured ankles if he collided with another patient.

There really are some entitled arses out there.

Goodbyealvin · 17/04/2016 20:45

What IS it about kids on scooters? I was in Starbucks today and 3 separate children were scooting up and down. Utterly ludicrous.

mudandmayhem01 · 17/04/2016 20:51

My children went out on their scooter this evening..... to the fucking park where scooters belong. What is wrong with these people.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 17/04/2016 20:58

I have teenagers that use their Scooters as a form of transport - they have been riding them since they were toddlers. Would I allow them to take them to a car show/museum/inside the supermarket/church/coffee shop etc.

Hell No!

They ride them to places, not inside. They mostly use the cycle path, occasionally the pavement but they ride with consideration of others and have lights and even a bell. It's not rocket science really is it?

Cagliostro · 17/04/2016 21:08

YANBU! Ugh. Wouldn't have been allowed in my day. And I'm only 29! :o

I find it bad enough when children use their scooters/skates etc in the library Angry

SecretNutellaFix · 17/04/2016 21:14

I bet that he's going to be one of those parents who buys their kid heelies and lets them us them in shops.
Bane of my life- I have spoken to several parents who just don't appear to give a monkeys until they get asked to stop their child from using heelies in the shop there I work. Scooters once. Where we sell lots of fragile ceramics and glassware. Where we have quite a high number of elderly/ mobility impaired customers.

shazzarooney99 · 17/04/2016 21:15

I personally think scooters are a pain in the arse at times! especially when kids go as fasdt as they can on them in the school playground and they have been asked politely many times in the news letter to not bring them onto school grounds, no thats wrong not to ride them on school grounds.

ScoutsMam · 17/04/2016 21:17

See it as a 'I don't parent my child properly' badge if they're anywhere but parks, cycle paths and closely monitored on pavements.

ScoutsMam · 17/04/2016 21:18

Damn it, that was in response to 'What IS it about kids on scooters?'

I hate heelies more (do they still make them?)

Heelies are "in" again.

KoalaDownUnder · 17/04/2016 21:44
