SUPERBLY entitled parenting

We went to a classic car show today. The cars there, if you like that sort of thing, were a delight, and most are the utter pride and joy of their owners. The site was fully tarmaced, there was catering and a picnic area etc. Usually scooters aren't allowed. Or skateboards, or roller skates. But on the next table to us, was a dad, uncle and two wee boys, both on micro scooters. The dad let the boys weave in and out between the cars, and the owners looked like they might throw up.

A security guard was summoned, and he politely explained that scooters weren't allowed. But the dad argued and argued that he had checked with security on the gate, and his two boys WERE allowed. As he was arguing, they both crashed into the back of a mint Triumph Herald. All he had to do was to keep the kids away from the cars. There was MILES of space to play (it's held at an airfield so literally miles) but no, he carried on letting them whiz up and down in the narrow gaps between the parked cars. The owner of a convertible E type Jag drive it away in frustration, with the dad harrumphing that his boys had the "right" to play there. What a dick.

God, thank you for this thread. I went clothes shopping the other week during Easter hols and received three separate ankle injuries from little dears who were being allowed to ride their fucking scooters around the shops. I then went home and Facebooked about it only to find that most of my friends allow their children to do exactly the same thing. Couldn't believe it. Am SO pleased it's not just me!!

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 18/04/2016 10:58

DF used to have a classic car, so as a small child I knew that even looking too closely standing 4 ft away would get a hard stare for the owner Grin

That dad is a complete wanker, why on earth was he even there? Clearly he doesn't have an appreciation for classic cars.

I hope the Triumph owner hunted him down.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 18/04/2016 10:59

*from the owner

MattDillonsPants · 18/04/2016 11:06

My neighbour is a collector...he has three or four of the most amazing looking cars...some of them really rare. He never even brings them onto the drive unless he is CERTAIN all my kids and the neighbour's are at school.

He is lovely but he would pass out if one skated near his vehicles. He's kind enough to show them to the kids under supervision if they want to look though. And once he borrowed a car to the school for some event or other. I think the Dad you describe should have been left to the mercy of the collectors!

OnlyLovers · 18/04/2016 11:13

Some people are selfish twats.

I hate people who let their kids ride scooters, or those shoes with wheels on, in busy streets and supermarkets. Fucking idiots.

snowgirl29 · 18/04/2016 11:15

YDNBU. I have hidden disabilities and the amount of time I've nearly been knocked flying by a kid on a scooter whilst the parent is ambling miles behind on the school run usually with their noses in their phone screens not paying attention to said kids pelting off at 60mph.

Dad sounded an entitled twat and I hope herald owner made him take responsibility.

riceuten · 18/04/2016 11:15

I was on a bus to a market town recently, and the mum of 2 children was allowing the children to ride up and down the aisle, despite protests from the driver (mainly because she was on the phone on some no doubt urgent business). We came to a halt at a roundabout (you can probably see where this is heading...) and the bus set out and then had to come to a screeching halt as some BMW shout out in front of us. The poor children both shot past me in a blur and ended up in a heap at the front of the bus and crying their eyes out.

What do you think happened next ?

NeedACleverNN · 18/04/2016 11:17

those shoes with wheels on, in busy streets and supermarkets. Fucking idiots.

I actually saw these on Friday.

A girl of about 11. She nearly went into a shelf of glasses in wilko's

If it did happen you can guarantee the mum wouldn't have said you should have been looking where you was going and walk next time. She would have gone mad at the shop

snowgirl29 · 18/04/2016 11:17

Oh my gosh ricoeten that is so dangerous! I'm guessing the bus driver got a bollocking off the mum who wasn't supervising her kids properly?

The mum went mad at the bus driver for daring to brake harshly and thus causing her snowflakes to get hurt

MissBattleaxe · 18/04/2016 11:18

I should imagine the Mum had a go at the driver for correctly using his brakes?

Honestly- scooters on a bus? Ridiculous to let your kids do that. How are they going to grow up with anything other than a God complex and a massive sense of entitlement?

murphys · 18/04/2016 11:29

Why are some parents so scared to say NO to their kids these days. Some kids are so wrapped in bubble wrap it pisses me off so badly.

My neighbour is one of these. I work from home and they think its funny if their 3 year old sits in the car and blows the horn of the car in the driveway...constantly! So I sent him a text message to highlight him to the noise, just in case he couldn't hear it for himself..... Shock

A friends child poured a bucket, yes a whole bucket of water over her grandfathers head whilst he was sitting having his tea outside one summer day. Parents didn't even reprimand her. Afraid I did though, and they still are not speaking to me.

My dc say I am a grumpy old bugger, but I don't care. Its beyond ridiculous.

TransvisionTramp · 18/04/2016 11:34

Bearlyknitted Urgh, the dad is a complete dick. What a great way to bring up kids, no respect for rules, no respect for other people's property or in this case their pride and joy. Good luck to him when they become teenagers.

riceuten I'm assuming the woman blamed the bus driver? Because it couldn't possibly be her fault her children hurt themselves.

As my mum would say. "dear me"!

lazymum99 · 18/04/2016 11:49

Don't own classic cars but feel quite possessive over my ordinary one. Have had to go out and 'politely' ask people not to lean against my car while they're fiddling on their phone. Have you seen what 'rivets' can of to paintwork. Do people just assume because it is parked in the street that you can use it as a seat.

BTW the Dad is a twat.

Scooters sold only be in the park. I just there out a pair of Heeleys which belonged to my 21 year old. He had them when he was about 11. I thought they had been banned.

Anniefluff790 · 18/04/2016 11:55

Jings, if I had my dream classic car and this happened, I think I'd probably nut the dad for being a twat and not having the decency to stop his children using scooters. If anyone DARED touch my dad's beautiful Land Rover Defender which is currently in our possession, I think I'd blow a gasket completely. Assholes

riceuten · 18/04/2016 12:14

Yup, that's exactly what happened, in an expletive filled rant. She even threatened to call Arriva. I honestly felt sorry for the children concerned

OnlyLovers · 18/04/2016 12:30

She even threatened to call Arriva.

I wish she had. Presumably someone there would have had the gumption to tell her where to get off. (pun not intended)

Knitwitty · 18/04/2016 12:34

Quook I must admit I've been known to do a bit of trolley surfing... only in a reasonably empty carpark, though. With a decent incline. Grin

chickendrizzlecake · 18/04/2016 12:39

So we now have scooters in libraries, churches, shops and now buses! Surely something is wrong when people no longer know the difference between INDOORS and OUTSIDE!

TransvisionTramp · 18/04/2016 12:59

riceuten wow. Just wow. Did the driver respond?
Genuinely baffled by some people's idea of parenting Shock

snowgirl29 · 18/04/2016 13:04

she even threatened to call Arriva

Can you imagine the phone call?
"I'd like to complain about bus no 123 for having the audacity to use his brakes correctly, they made my children fall and they're injured and I'm also trying to see if I can get some compo out of this".

"what were your children doing at the time madam?".

"well scootering up and down the gangway on a moving ten tonne vehicle whilst my nose was in the phone but its the drivers fault". Hmm

All the buses up here have rolling cctv precisely for reasons like this and other reasons of course. Hope Arriva have similar to put that entitled woman in her place.

" It's like letting them scoot around a museum "

Exactly! These cars are not made any more and are pieces of history. I would not take the scooters there and then they couldn't ride them. Just take them to the park before and let them burn off their energy.

I wonder if he uttered the classic line 'oh boys will be boys'. I have 2 boys and I keep them in line most of the time

Notso · 18/04/2016 13:57

Scooters are a pain in the arse. Great fun for the park or garden but that should be it. They are dangerous on busy pavements.
So many parents on here say their kids are safe because they only scoot next to them at walking pace. What's the point then, just bloody walk! I've never seen a child scoot at walking pace, they are always zooming along miles ahead or the parent who is either ineffectually telling them to be careful, running to catch up as they approach a main road or pig ignorant chatting to another parent or on their phone.

ouryve · 18/04/2016 14:56

She even threatened to call Arriva

Haha! Good luck to her with that. Stupid woman.

I was upstairs on a bus where there was a girl riding up and down on heelies, while we were pootling along the motorway, last year. It was clearly dad's weekend with the children and he was such a wet blanket. DS1 was muttering away about how stupid it was. I half considered sending him along to get the ire out of his system by informing the guy about what an idiot he was being for not telling his DD, in no uncertain terms, to sit down. Selective mutism was the main barrier to that, of course.
