to want to ban the selfie stick?

Lovely friend of mine put some photos up on fakebook of her recent holiday and a night out, all taken with one of these ridiculous sticks. We're going away for a few days on a city break soon and she tells me she's bringing it. AIBU to think they are just crap and it's bit narcissistic to be wandering around taking photos of yourself so blatantly in public?

I'm just going to sidestep her each time she gets it out!

Agreed - I was in a beautiful tourist city last summer and it was ruined for me by all the selfie sticks held aloft by the crowds. Made me think that my kids would never have the experience of seeing a famous site without selfie sticks blocking the view!

We were in Venice and Florence last summer and it drove us nuts! YANBU.

Oh gosh! I hate the things. We went to Windsor castle in the summer. We were at the front to see the changing of the guard. I knew that there were a lot of people behind us once it started. Turned around and there were hundreds of tourists with selfie sticks!!

Think they were using them as long arms and using the phone as a camera iyswim.

YANBU. I went for a day out in London recently and everyone at a particular tourist site was using them-why must they have endless pictures of themselves blocking a cracking view of a fabulous place-dumb, IMO. Hate them.

My cousin went mental at her SIL taking stupid amounts of selfies, including her and posting them on Facebook then tagging everyone. She insisted on all pictures of her and her DCs being removed. Her SIL lives her life on FB, every day there are pictures of every single thing her DCs do. Poor kids.

Back in the day i asked random strangers to take photos of me and my friends / husband when out and about. My camera cost £20. I would not hand over my iphone6 to a stranger on the street, hence the need for a selfie stick.

Yanbu. Disney world in Florida/Universal have banned them from their parks. So annoying!

I love my selfie stick. It was a Christmas present from DS and is fantastic for taking family photos, looking over high walls (a la periscope). Oh and it's great for taking pictures of my camera shy cats who normally run a mile when they see me trying to snap a picture.

I'll happily ram a selfie stick up the owner's arse any time.

back in the day, pictures of the sight or scenery were enough. We weren't so me-me-me that we had to put pictures of ourselves into everything.

that does explain why the old 'could you take our picture' has gone, though; the whizzy-bricks are very expensive.

I don't care, I've got a camera. Battery lasts a week and it takes great photos. It is much smaller and less fragile than an i-thing.

Disneyland Paris have also banned them. No end of people tried to smuggle them in when we were there over Easter, they have scanners for bags and all sorts of security measures to prevent them but I still saw a couple of families stood in front of the castle with massive selfie sticks they'd managed to sneak in. Naughty rule breakers.

I don't mind them. DS1 wants one for his phone. He's been refused on the grounds that every stick ever entering this house is used as a weapon to joust/attack/whip someone. He can buy his own when he's 18.

Why do you have such a problem with people taking "blatant" pictures of themselves? More so with a selfie stick?

I don't have a selfie stick but I want one because I like taking pictures of myself and my friends, or my OH, or maybe myself and my cat... Or maybe when I'm out at the castle, or out doing something fun... Because I'm a normal human being, I like my face and I like to share nice moments on FB.

Most of our family holiday snaps when we were young are me and my siblings with either parent while the other took it. We have so, so few of us all. Actually im not sure we have any except at weddings.

YANBU. Can I also ban people using iPads to film or take photos? I really don't want to look at everything through their bloody screen!

They've been banned at Disney now.

Mind info like watching everyone with them - adds another element to people watching. 14y dd does have I've but tbh rarely uses it at all. Everyone I see with them are older than that - early/mid 20s upwards

I have just bought a selfie stick today. We are going on holiday soon to the middle of nowhere and I would like some nice family photoso to remember the trip. I highly doubt we will see people to ask to take our picture, hence the need for a stick

When I first saw them on sale, I thought 'Who on earth would want one of those??'. So naive...

I have never wanted photos of myself, and am very happy to be the photographer.

I'm old enough to remember nights out before social media when we all used to actually talk to each other and dance, instead of sitting there in silence whilst we uploaded selfies onto Facefuck and repeatedly refreshed the page to see how many "likes" we had.

Why shouldn't people want photos of themselves on holiday? I hate asking strangers to take my picture that is a lot more vain than just using a selfie stick. I don't have one but my dh has long arms so don't need one.

I don't use one. Consequently, I have very few pictures of my and my husband in some lovely places. Because there have been very few places I've been comfortable handing over £1.5 of camera/lens.

I've only just seen my first selfie-stick in real life, so I'm not sick of them at all.

I understand taking photos of yoursefl: I barely have any photos of myself, as I'm the one with the camera. I really, really had to scrape to find a photo to send to someone on short notice. Why not want to record yourself along with the people with you? And while I don't mind so much that I don't have photos of myself, it does me sad to realise I don't have photos of myself and my daughter together.

YANBU. I'd assume someone was bored & having a shit time if they were uploading photos of themselves to Facebook while on holiday.

I quite like them, I was putting together a lot of photos last week and realized we don't have a lot of all 5 of us together as opposed to just photos of me or my husband with the kids. One of my dds was looking for family photos for a school thing and we were hard pushed to find a few. I then started to look back at my own childhood photos and apart from the obligatory first communion ones they are very little of me, my sibling and both parents from our childhood and even from our adulthood - I'd like to have more with my parents from when I was younger. My eldest now takes selfies with our extended family - Nanas, aunts, uncles, the usual birthday party attendees. It's nice and I think she'll like hanging onto them.
