To think you shouldn't just blindly help yourself to the minbar when someone else is paying?

£35 for a vodka/tonic- extortionate
I don't mind paying for a beer @ £4 or a juice but that's ridiculous.

She will be expecting to pay before you all leave I imagine. No way would I pay for someone using the mini bar!

I stay in a lot of hotels and it's becoming increasingly rare to find a minibar even in "posh" hotels - and often they will fill it on demand.

Whether it's ok to help yourself or not depends on the circumstances but she should have checked the price list first.

Just tell her what happened that would be my advice. She may just offer you the money. If she doesn't, then I would tackle that one depending upon her reaction. I don't know enough about her to ascertain if she was acting entitled of if it was just an oversight. But I would treat it very matter of fact and see what she says.

OP - I've no idea what you can do. I think it was probably a very genuine mistake so I'd be inclined to say I will stand you that drink but anything else is up to you. But it could also be that she's planning on paying her own drinks bill and she'll tell you that when you bring things up.

guess you have already checked out - your room and DSis Room - otherwise you wouldn't know that she had added a £35 vodka to your combined bill (which you are paying for)

some hotels will display a running total of your account on the TV each time you use your account, and others quite often slip a copy of the days account under your door in the middle of the night.

Exactly this. I would not even consult the price list before not drinking, that's how much the minibar does not exist for me.

Of course I would check, especially if someone else is paying, and I would make it very clear that I would pay my own minibar (well I would never drink from the minibar actually).

I think it is very inconsiderate not to notice prices that other people are covering for you. Even if the other person is a millionaire, I would assume they would rather give £35 to charity than spend it on one drink for me.

She should pay, why would you pay for her? They are generally extortionate - I never touch them. If she didn't realise how expensive they are then this is how she will learn!

Like theoretician the minibar doesn't exist for me. I've never looked at the prices or had anything from a minibar as I have always assumed they are sky high.

It can't be £35 for one drink can it? Or are you in a tres posh hotel somewhere where alcohol is extortionately priced, like Norway?

She needs to pay for it herself and learn that minibars are almost always stupidly expensive so don't have anything unless you are prepared to pay or someone else has agreed to pay.

Interestingly I've stayed in a lot of v naice hotels are some of the most expensive have had v reasonable think £1.50 beers, it's the big 4* chains who are the worst, see also wifi rip offs

Did she actually drink it though? The last time I stayed in a hotel the mini bar had a sensor on it. Any drinks you picked up and did not put back in 10 seconds were charged to the room.

I suppose if you are not used to staying in hotels you might be unaware that mini bar prices are massively hiked. But generally speaking YANBU, I'd have thought a huge majority know you pay through the nose.

Those sensors terrify me. I like to have a nosy at the minibar contents and the whole thing just sits there taunting me with 'look with your eyes not your hands'.
