To wish supermarket staff were a bit more glamorous.

Obviously this is lighthearted - but strolling through Tesco earlier I thought how much nicer it would be if the staff had a touch of glamour about them - supermarket shopping is such a boring drudge isn't it, & I for one would be so cheered up if the staff were a bit more 'Hollywood' - obviously it doesn't have to be the full Audrey Hepburn or James Bond - but maybe a step up from dowdy overalls.

Anyone else?

Sorry if you're offended but I've done retail work and personally I prefer to so other stuff. For most people the level of responsibility and decision making is low. It's great that you like your job though.

TheDowagerCuntess · 15/04/2016 20:19

But she was being nice - she was sticking up for retail staff in the face of many people who would never dream of actually doing it themselves.

NapQueen · 15/04/2016 20:22

You need to go at night. The tesco by me after 11pm becomes positively raucous.

The music is on loud, the staff sing, the women nearly all have a full face of make up on (presumably off on the piss once their shift ends, or so tired that theyve no choice but to go that time). The blokes are all whistly (in a chirpy tune way not a wolfwhislte way).

Its as close as I get to a night out these days.

I'm somewhat confused as to why MrsD's initial comment has come in for so much flack. Within the context the phrase was used, it was obvious that it was in defence of retail workers.

Quiero · 15/04/2016 20:29

Many people on Mumsnet need to try and walk a mile in someone else's shoes. I'm amazed everyday about how clueless people on here are about wider society. There's some canny champagne socialism going on.

I think the OP probably meant it as lighthearted but it doesn't take long for the snobs to crawl out.

Funnily enough, they're up in arms the minute anyone starts stereotyping them and referring to Boden or whatever.

RudeElf · 15/04/2016 20:30

Christ almighty mrsdv. I have told you again and again, i knew exactly what you meant. Accept it or dont. Twist it how you like if it makes you feel better. I have explained it enough times. Twist your own comments how you like too. Its there for all to see. The phrase comes across badly. Thats opinion. You dont have to like it. I still get to think it and i'm still allowed to say it.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 15/04/2016 20:30

I don't normally jump in to defend people, but Mrs DV, I am finding your posts to RudeElf aggressive. You are accusing the poster of not understanding your point of view, when you are doing exactly the same thing. Agreeing to disagree would seem the best way to go - it was clearly a misunderstanding.

Seriously, the OP is clearly an invitation to fantasy and ridiculousness

Thank you thecatfromjapan for 'getting me' Flowers
This was never intended as a dig at supermarket workers at all, & if anyone has taken it that way them I truly am sorry.
yes, I am from a different time. I love tradition, impeccable manners, & old style glamour. And why shouldn't supermarket workers have the same clothing as airline staff, hotel staff etc, they're doing just as an important a job & are just as worthy.

Anyway - it's Friday, so peace, love, ( & glamour ) Wine

Wow, this is surreal.

I don't normally jump in to defend people either, but the post is indeed there for all to see. MrsD was being kind to retail staff.

If the phrase is so egregious, then why no go back and re-read the actual post - which was being nice!

RudeElf · 15/04/2016 20:35

She is being fucking horrible and aggressive to me.

Confused

Thedowager as has been explained several times in my posts, i read the post, i know what the intent of the post was.

RudeElf · 15/04/2016 20:36

I didnt misunderstand. You know this.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 15/04/2016 20:37

I totally agree with MrsDV. Working in retail is frigging grim. I've done it and wouldn't touch it again with a bargepole, and the vast majority of people I know who've done it feel the same way.

She's not attacking shop workers or denigrating them in any way. Just saying that you get treated like absolute dogshit, no matter how nice you are to the customers.

As for the thread itself - we've just been issued with our new uniform (financial services). Air hostess neckties :( I feel like I'm wearing a collar. I wouldn't subject anyone working in retail to that; it's gruelling enough in breathable cotton.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 15/04/2016 20:38

(that said, our customer base is quite middle aged/elderly and they tend to really appreciate the fact that we look very smart)

GreenishMe · 15/04/2016 20:39

Err...can I just say? I work in retail and I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole myself if I had a choice.

I wasn't offended by the term Mrs. DV used in defence of retail workers. This is a mountain out of a molehill

If the person who actually made the comment has tried to explain she didn't mean to be offensive, surely that's the end of the matter?

TheDowagerCuntess · 15/04/2016 20:45

If you know what the overall intent of the post was, how can you not see that she was sticking up for retail workers, then?
