To buy a second-hand next-to-me Crib? (and are they worth the money?)

I know there are rules for reusing baby beds, but if I wash everything and get a new mattress is it ok? Really want one for impending Baby number one, but at £150 they're a bit pricey.

Anyone used these before? How long can I keep baby in it before they outgrow it? Would you recommend?

Well there's a company that keeps coming up FB where you can hire them for £69 for a long as you like.

I can't see them buying it and then chucking them when they are returned. I would say as long as it is clean and has a new mattress it should be fine

Loads for sale on my local FB selling site that get snapped up withing moments of going up. New mattress wash the other material and your good to go.

I bought one for DD. Probably the best purchase (of many) that I made. I used it till six months but could have gone to eight. Was great for travelling too and dd has always slept well in it. Absolutely worth it!! I would say that as long as you get a new mattress you're fine. It is an unusual size though so you have to get one from an online company and make sure you keep the hard board of the old mattress.

You can hire them for as long as you need, fully refurbished with new mattress from the nct for about £69. Worth a look

Thank you! The Chicco ones I've seen have new mattresses you can buy pretty easily so that won't be an issue hopefully, I'll add it to my list!

I used a BedNest and found it really useful for breastfeeding.

If you're worried about the mattress you could maybe buy the crib second hand then buy a new mattress from another company? A quick Google should show you the cost.

P.S. Mine was the NCT Bed Best mentioned above and I totally forgot that they could be rented!

My baby still occasionally sleeps in hers at 7 months but they recommend using them just up to 6months. I found the company easy to deal with and delivery was fast and efficient.

I have a next2me for my nearly 3 month old. Until recently we've co-slept but the cot is great for peace of mind; I know he can't fall out. I'm trying to teach him to sleep in it (he's in there now threatening to wake).
Pros: great for breastfeeding, lasts longer than Moses basket, easily transported to eg granny's house, can be angled for refluxy/snotty babies.
Cons:the mattress seems very solid, we've put several blankets between it and the sheet. You can't put the side up/down when it's attached. It doesn't rock (the last 2 don't bother me but come up in reviews).

I have a next to me for dc6 I love it is has improved our sleep so much compared to the others even though as a baby she is by far the most difficult!

I have loved ours, bough it when ds was a week old because he was massive and too big for the moses basket. You can raise end and still keep attached to the bed, whereas we couldn't without basket as it had rocking stand. He's now 6 months and is probably going to be out of it within a few weeks as he is beginning to move around. I'm definitely going to be selling ours, I have seen a lot of them going for 70-80 on eBay/Facebook pages. We bought ours new with the intention of getting half the money back when we sell it on. I'm not sure I would like a rented one though, although not sure why that doesn't sit right with me. It is expensive to buy one, but we had literally nothing g else to get as this was dc3 so treated ourselves to a perfect prep and the chicco next to me. Both excellent purchases.

I have a Chicco next2me crib. Dd is 4mths. Also bought a sleepyhead. Did start off with a Moses basket but she would not settle in it. Plan to keep her in crib for as long as possible.

I got a arms reach co sleeper, second hand £50 it was the best money I had ever spent on any child related item, it was a god send.

A GOD SEND. I had moses with first and WISHED i had this co sleeper for second!

without a doubt spend money on co sleeper or whatever they are called now...far better to spend on this - will hold value AND much better spent than on travel systems.

Definitely a really good purchase. I would totally have been fine with a second hand one as the fabric is sort of plasticy - soft but wipe cleanable. Ours got used loads & was great we could take it away wherever we were as baby still sleeping in its normal surroundings so he slept just as badly well as at home.

Definitely get one, it makes nights so much easier, particularly if breastfeeding. My Dd is only 10 days old still but the nights haven't even been that bad the last week due to being able to breastfeed laying down. I love co sleeper cots!!

Oh and ours was second hand too (bought for older son and now using it again). Bought a new mattress for both babies though.

We started off with a standalone crib.. DD was having none of it and would only sleep on me. After 8 weeks I sent DH out to Argos to buy a chicco next2me.. He nearly had a heart attack at the price but knew better than to argue with a frantic, sleep deprived woman.

Best. Buy. Ever.

DD slept happily in it, attached to our bed and we often slept holding hands or with my hand on her tummy.

I have just sold it on eBay for half price as we've now moved her into own room.

Definitely recommend!

Another recommendation for bednest. There is a rental option or you can buy it back option where they will buy it back for a certain proportion of the price within a certain length of time. Bit vague on the details, sorry We loved ours, got the buy it back option but wouldn't even consider it.

If you can wipe it clean and get a new mattress I'd do that. Or rent one. No point in wasting money.

We had a snuzpod. Best thing ever for breastfeeding - paid around £200 new and it was worth every penny.

Would have no problem buying second hand as long as it was thoroughly cleaned and mattress was new.

If I was to ever have another baby this would be top of my shopping list. I really regret not having one as I'd regularly freak out whilst Co sleeping that the worst had happened. I'd go for a second hand one but buy a new mattress.

My dd is still in hers @ 6mo but will soon be moving to her big cot as she is a very tall baby. Chico next to me. Really good investment and I don't think there would be a problem buying a second hand one, as long as you go buy a new mattress! Xxx
