AIBU to have thought this was a shitty excuse?

I'm pregnant and my due date is in two days. We have one son, Franklin James Wilder. Our surname is a religious building. I LOVE vintage names. Husband less so but he liked Franklin when we chose it and frequently calls him: Franklin, Frankie, Lin and Frankie-Jay when around his East London mates who all have kids called Charlie-Jay, Tommy-Lee, Sammy-Joe and names similar. I've never minded the Frankie-Jay thing and thought it was cute. He chose Franklin's middle names. Now, we are having a little girl. We have a name, Gertrude Isabelle Laura. He loved it and chose her middle names. He also mentioned calling her Gertie-Belle, Tru, Gertie and Gertrude. I love this name. Today, he has come to me saying that he doesn't want to name her Gertrude anymore. Shock When, I asked why, he said that I'm worried about what my mates will think. We should call her Lily-Mae or Lola-Rose instead. She needs a proper girly name. This has wound me right round the bend. When he said it, I just walked off. I think this is a rubbish excuse. His mates wouldn't say a thing! Most of them call Franklin, Frankie-Jay but a quite a few call him Franklin.

Sorry but I'm another one who thinks Gertrude is dreadful.

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/04/2016 07:40

Garlic, Nora isn't even in the Top 100 according to ONS.

MissHooliesCardigan · 13/04/2016 08:44

I'm sure I read that Gertrude is now officially obsolete ie nobody has called a baby Gertrude for the last ten years. Sorry, but it's really ugly and she will inevitably get the Dirtie Gertie and Putrid Gertrude teasing.
There are some lovely names out there:
Beatrice
Florence
Elsie
Lilian
Betty
Great

Please don't do this to your child.

HazelBite · 13/04/2016 09:00

I usually don't comment on name threads but really Op Gertrude is a truly horrible name, it is an ugly name completely unfeminine and I think that your OH has mentioned this name to various folks who have all expressed sheer horror that anyone would name their child thus, and yes to probably spare your feelings has invented a "shitty excuse".
As you have noticed from this thread MNetter's are not sparing your feelings!
Your son's name is a perfectly acceptable nice name, please give his sister something equally acceptable that she can live with and not to want to change by deed poll as soon as she is of age.
By the way I had a great aunt who I never realised was called Gertrude because she hated her name so much (she was born in 1900) and called herself for the majority of her life by her middle name ie its never been a "lovely" name

myusernamewastaken · 13/04/2016 09:01

I'm sorry but Gertrude is a hideous name....It's on a par with Maud and Morag.

StrangeLookingParasite · 13/04/2016 09:04

I like Georgina.

OzzieFem · 13/04/2016 09:57

Reminds me of a UK comic book character of years ago. She was a giant eskimo and was called Gobble Gobble Gertie. Poor kid.

splendide · 13/04/2016 09:59

I like Gertrude :)

Trudy is an ace name

splendide · 13/04/2016 10:00

Lol also like Maude very much, not keen on Morag although I am the correct ethnicity for it

PresidentOliviaMumsnet · 13/04/2016 11:28

@DiggersRest

Why don't you tell us where you live too OP as you've certainly not comprehended anonymous!

thanks for all the reports about this - we have had no concerns from the OP herself - if we did we would be happy to delete this thread in this instance.
Thanks
MNHQ

Kittykatmacbill · 13/04/2016 12:17

Gertrude is nice but I am a big fan of jolie-laide names, my dd's would have been Margaret and Agnes if dh hadn't vetoed. They still have fairly jolie-laide names...

However Gertrude is fairly nonforgiving, but lola-rose is dreadful too, maybe time to compromise?

KERALA1 · 13/04/2016 12:20

I like Gertrude but agree with above poster I seem to like names everyone else hates like Alberta.

Also whats with all the Tommy-Lee, Frankie-Jay thing makes it sound like your friends are hill billies from the deep south of America

pictish · 13/04/2016 12:30

Do we think the OP is sticking pins an an MN collective voodoo doll?
Sorry OP...I hope you're not too pissed off.

YourLeftElbow · 13/04/2016 12:42

Pictish what was the book?

I love old lady names. Enid is lovely! But not Gertrude. It's just hard-sounding. What about Una?

Twinklestein · 13/04/2016 12:43

Gertrude is nice but I am a big fan of jolie-laide names

Gertrude isn't jolie laide is laide laide.

Agnes is sweet. Sounds better in French though.

OliviaStabler · 13/04/2016 12:44

YABU. His mates reactions should be taken into account because, either behind your back or to your face, this is how 99% of people will react if you call your child Gertrude.

GertrudeBadger · 13/04/2016 12:47

yes I generally think it's best to steer clear of names that still strongly connote negative things to most people, Gertrude is clearly in that category, as is lily-mae etc. Love Agnes though - dithered over that one for my 2 DDs.

Twinklestein · 13/04/2016 12:48

Someone mentioned Cora - Franklin and Cora sounds cool.

pictish · 13/04/2016 12:49

The book was called Our Endless Numbered Days by Claire Fuller. Have you read it?

pictish · 13/04/2016 12:51

I like Cora too...and Dora...I especially like Nora.
OP choose an 'ora' name. Isadora is fab.

Teacaddy · 13/04/2016 12:51

What, the 'mates' whose impeccable taste in baby names favours the incontrovertibly low-rent 'Charlie-Jay, Tommy-Lee and Sammy-Joe'? Grin Grin

YourLeftElbow · 13/04/2016 12:53

No pictish but I wrote a book with a protagonist called Peggy and was hoping that someone had actually read it Grin
Peggy is such a cool name

MamaLazarou · 13/04/2016 12:59

I quite like Gertrude. Gertie and Trudy are cute nicknames.

ANYTHING is better than Lily-Mae.

annabelismad · 13/04/2016 15:03

Just wanted to let you know that Maxine Isabelle Laura was born today. She is beautiful and healthy. She weighs 7lb and 8oz. We ended up scrapping Gertrude as my DH admitted he had cold feet about the name and we got our little Maxine, a name we hadn't even considered beforehand! Perhaps, when Gertrude is back in style we'll use it.
But, for now, we're happy with baby Maxine and her big brother Franklin.
Thanks for the kind comments and the not so kind! I've not mentioned our surname at all so I don't understand concerns. Maybe, some people need to read the OP a bit better rather than skimming and scanning!

Congratulations OP. Hope you and little Maxine are doing well.
