I'm pregnant and my due date is in two days. We have one son, Franklin James Wilder. Our surname is a religious building. I LOVE vintage names. Husband less so but he liked Franklin when we chose it and frequently calls him: Franklin, Frankie, Lin and Frankie-Jay when around his East London mates who all have kids called Charlie-Jay, Tommy-Lee, Sammy-Joe and names similar. I've never minded the Frankie-Jay thing and thought it was cute. He chose Franklin's middle names. Now, we are having a little girl. We have a name, Gertrude Isabelle Laura. He loved it and chose her middle names. He also mentioned calling her Gertie-Belle, Tru, Gertie and Gertrude. I love this name. Today, he has come to me saying that he doesn't want to name her Gertrude anymore. Shock When, I asked why, he said that I'm worried about what my mates will think. We should call her Lily-Mae or Lola-Rose instead. She needs a proper girly name. This has wound me right round the bend. When he said it, I just walked off. I think this is a rubbish excuse. His mates wouldn't say a thing! Most of them call Franklin, Frankie-Jay but a quite a few call him Franklin.

I love the name Nancy.
And Ali shortened from Alistine, or Alice.
I like Esther and used to like Isabelle and Olivia a lot.
Gertrude is a lot to lumber a child with. It sounds harsh and comes with 'connotations.'

StrangeLookingParasite · 12/04/2016 22:28

Gertrude Isabelle Laura Gurdwara

Gertrude is just so grim, shameful and sniggery, it's not fair to inflict on a child.

I get why you like vintage names and really like Franklin, but there must be something nicer?

Lily-Mae and Lola Rose are awfully clichéd. There's a jewellery brand called the latter.

dotdotdotmustdash · 12/04/2016 22:30

If you call her Gertrude please don't be upset when everyone you introduce her to fleetingly winces as if in pain.

Twinklestein · 12/04/2016 22:31

Nancy's my daughter's middle name. I've always loved it.

There've been lots of cool Nancys - Nancy Astor, Nancy Mitford, Sid and Nancy...

MerryMarigold · 12/04/2016 22:37

I love Franklin. I also like Gertrude and I don't generally like old lady chic (don't get me started on Amelia and Millicent).

How about you compromise with dh on Gertie-Maeve or Trudi-Fay

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 12/04/2016 22:37

Lol @ Maureen making a comeback, Maureen-Mae Perhaps.

SquinkiesRule · 12/04/2016 22:40

Older lady names I like
Maxine
Alice
Ruby
Marianne
Amelia
Beatrice
Margaret
Anne

Naicehamshop · 12/04/2016 22:42

Ewwww!! NOT Gertrude!

How about.....Brenda???! Grin

butteredmuffin · 12/04/2016 22:44

Marianne is lovely.

Thissameearth · 12/04/2016 22:45

No it's gone too far - there is no such thing as "vintage names". Hmm

SuperFlyHigh · 12/04/2016 22:45

suchafuss surely you mean Agnes?? Agnus sounds male??

Pictish is that a stork I seeing flying by then?! Smile

MerryMarigold · 12/04/2016 22:46

How about Marilyn? Has the American feel of Franklin.

ollieplimsoles · 12/04/2016 22:59

4/10 op

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/04/2016 23:05

His alleged reasoning is a bit odd but he is essentially right, Gertrude is awful.

Greta, Frida, Rita, Nora seem like they might be up your street but are infinitely nicer than Gertrude.

TheHiphopopotamus · 12/04/2016 23:06

What about Gertrude-Maureen-Mae? The best of all three worlds.

Lola-Gertrude
Brenda-Lily (that could work, but sounds a bit like a sanitary towel brand)
Gertie-Mae
Or maybe go a bit left left field and spell it Gurtrooyd?

butteredmuffin · 12/04/2016 23:11

What about Maeve? It's a bit like Mae but a lot more unusual and ticks the vintage box as well.

AKissACuddleAndACheekyFinger · 12/04/2016 23:14

My Christian name is Emily-Kate although I only ever get called Kate and most people I have met as an adult do not know that is my real name. Randomly, I went to school with another Emily-Kate (assuming it was a 'thing' in the 80's) and work with an Emma-Kate. None of us are known by our full hyphenated names: I honestly see no point in doing it. Parents use them but nobody else once the children are adults, it's just a bloody faff when you have a form to fill out.

Not a Gertrude fan here I'm afraid. Dirty Gertie. And I also know a limerick from school about a Gertrude. She poohed.

Twinklestein · 12/04/2016 23:16

Mathilda, Maud, Violet, Myrtle, Ivy...

Twinklestein · 12/04/2016 23:18

No it's gone too far - there is no such thing as "vintage names". hmm

Of course there are - names that were fashionable in the past.

Claraoswald36 · 12/04/2016 23:18

Ooh I love the name wilder!
Gertrude sounds like an ironic name. Always thought that about lily Allen calling her kid Ethel too.
Franklin is a fabulous name I think you can do better than Gertrude to compliment it - and I mean that in a nice way because I think your sons names are lovely and unusual but nothing he will get teased for.

Twinklestein · 12/04/2016 23:19

If you like G names what about Gwendolyn or Guinevere.

Twinklestein · 12/04/2016 23:21

Greta's not bad - wouldn't choose it but I don't hate it. Or Gretchen.

Twinklestein · 12/04/2016 23:22

I've always liked the name Giselle because of the ballet.

MajesticWhine · 12/04/2016 23:25

Gwendoline is a terrific idea. DH could even call her Gwennie rose if he really feels he must.
