I'm pregnant and my due date is in two days. We have one son, Franklin James Wilder. Our surname is a religious building. I LOVE vintage names. Husband less so but he liked Franklin when we chose it and frequently calls him: Franklin, Frankie, Lin and Frankie-Jay when around his East London mates who all have kids called Charlie-Jay, Tommy-Lee, Sammy-Joe and names similar. I've never minded the Frankie-Jay thing and thought it was cute. He chose Franklin's middle names. Now, we are having a little girl. We have a name, Gertrude Isabelle Laura. He loved it and chose her middle names. He also mentioned calling her Gertie-Belle, Tru, Gertie and Gertrude. I love this name. Today, he has come to me saying that he doesn't want to name her Gertrude anymore. Shock When, I asked why, he said that I'm worried about what my mates will think. We should call her Lily-Mae or Lola-Rose instead. She needs a proper girly name. This has wound me right round the bend. When he said it, I just walked off. I think this is a rubbish excuse. His mates wouldn't say a thing! Most of them call Franklin, Frankie-Jay but a quite a few call him Franklin.

pictish ah your last lot are better!

pictish · 12/04/2016 21:12

I'm just saying them as they come. My dd doesn't have a vintage type name actually. More a foreign one.

SuperFlyHigh · 12/04/2016 21:12

Brunhilde is a lovely name OP, regal too! Grin

EllenJanethickerknickers · 12/04/2016 21:13

My exBIL is called Reginald, his brother is Harold. They are 50 and 48! Reg was a bondage trouser wearing punk and is still in a Clash tribute band. Sorry but Reginald, Harold and Gertrude just aren't very rock and roll.

pictish · 12/04/2016 21:13

Greta is nice.

pictish · 12/04/2016 21:14

I like Leisel as well.

Therealloislane · 12/04/2016 21:14

Lily may is horrible.

How abut Olivia? Or Emma? Or Agatha?

Any of them are better than Gertrude.

SuperFlyHigh · 12/04/2016 21:14

Is it foreign Pictish because you are or part or just because you like it?

Mine isn't even a name really more a word...

Sort of get away with it as grandads side on her side is German/French direct so I make more of that... My aunt has called her dogs German names like lottie, fritz, kaiser but then they're not kids!

SuperFlyHigh · 12/04/2016 21:15

Leisel?!

There Olivia is far too well used these days.

arethereanyleftatall · 12/04/2016 21:16

Emmeline?

For the life of me, I cannot imagine why anyone having a baby now would call their dd anything like lily-Mae - given the stereotype associated with those kinds of names.

bertsdinner · 12/04/2016 21:17

Gertrude as a name is ok, sounds a bit Germanic. It`s a real old lady name though. I think there are worse names, Enid is pretty bad.

TheHiphopopotamus · 12/04/2016 21:18

I was in Cornwall last summer and there was a gorgeous little girl of about 2 wandering about the beach and I heard her mum shouting 'Enid, come back here'

Enid! Enid! Why on earth would you saddle someone with a name like that. The same goes for Gertrude. It conjures up images of grey chin hairs, cardigans with holes in and imperial mints.

Don't do it, OP.

pictish · 12/04/2016 21:18

Just because we liked it. It's Russian.

TheHiphopopotamus · 12/04/2016 21:19

SuperFlyHigh · 12/04/2016 21:22

Pictish my name (but not a name it's a word) is also Russian. Nothing wrong with that at all. It's the Moon Unit etc ones I feel for.

EverySongbirdSays · 12/04/2016 21:23

Gertrude was also the joke name when I grew up.

It's on a par with Ethel isnt one of Lily Allen's called Ethel?

justmyview · 12/04/2016 21:24

Alice
Josephine
Emily

monkeysox · 12/04/2016 21:24

betty. Delia. Florence,

I know young children with all of these names.

I like all of them but I know these names would never have been used where and when I grew up as too old fashioned.

Gertrude isn't the nicest. Sorry op

pictish · 12/04/2016 21:25

Polly was our closest runner up. There's an incredible song by Dillard and Clark called Polly and dh and I both love it.

justkeepongoing · 12/04/2016 21:27

Therealloislane · 12/04/2016 21:30

Sadie?

ParadiseCity · 12/04/2016 21:31

I don't think DH could tell you what his friends babies are called... This is a bit odd....

Fwiw I like Gertrude but I don't really care for your DH.
