Would it be weird and unreasonable to knock on someone's door asking them for who decorated their house/did their kitchen and bathroom. I don't know too many peoe in the area having moved from London and none of my friends know of decent builders.

I noticed a house several doors down from me on same road (so not immediate or near immediate neighbours!) has recently sold in the matter of days largely due to the interior being very sympathetic to the age of the house and in particular I would love a similar kitchen and bathroom and am also wanting to knock through my dining and living room like they have done...
but I don't know them and was hoping o find out?

Has anyone done this

How do you know what the inside of their house looks like?
Maybe just knock and say you are new to the area and looking for recommendations?

I was going to say no if it was just from peeking in the window! But YANBU as it's been on the market, good idea.

LifeofI · 07/04/2016 16:53

if someone knocked on my door and asked this i wouldnt think it was weird and would be happy to help. Just explain you moved and dont know any builders in the area.

sepa · 07/04/2016 16:55

I would knock and ask. I have had my neighbors do the same about our gutters and didn't think it strange

Thurlow · 07/04/2016 16:56

Not weird at all, especially if you're complimenting it - who doesn't like a good compliment?

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 07/04/2016 16:57

The bloke who bought next door to do up as a rental asked us if he could look at our kitchen.

I think it's fine.

molyholy · 07/04/2016 17:13

Definitely fine. It's quite a compliment really and I would be happy for someone to do this. Especially if you have looked at it online. Come on, who doesn't have a look online when a property on their street goes up for sale.

Joolsy · 07/04/2016 17:27

I'd do it and if they think you're weird, that's ok as they'll be moving soon anyway!

KeepingitReal2 · 07/04/2016 17:48

Thanks I think I will as I'm in a big city and its hard to find good builders!
Obviously want to do it before they exchange and complete! Ha ha
I know because of the pictures online?? I can tell it has been done to a high standard

I have done it with neighbours - seen a tradesman working there and ask what they thought of them. Sometimes the answer is to avoid them with a barge pole!!

emotionsecho · 07/04/2016 17:57

Yes knock and ask I'm sure they will be happy to tell you, I would and would take it as a compliment.

MaidOfStars · 07/04/2016 18:17

'Oh, I've just seen your house online, it's lovely. Can I ask if you used any companies and who they are?'

I don't see an issue with that.
