To put a bin next to the toilet.

This makes me irrationally angry: My job involves going to people's houses. Normally I will be with them between a and 4 hours, so occasionally I will have to use their toilet.
Today I'm on my period and have quite heavy flow. I was on a longer job (3hrs) and bled through my tampon. I discovered that there was no von in the bathroom. Just to be clear. I try to avoid having to change my tampon in client's houses by changing in public loos, McDonald's or Starbucks and carry scented plastic bags with me tobwrap the offender in when I have to do it at someone's house.
So, anyway, i was in the very awkward position of having a soaked tampon and no way of getting rid of it. I was in charge of a very young child - so no way of nipping out to the bins or a pub (to use the loo) and ended up stemming the flow with toilet paper and going back to working with their dc for another hour.
I will not flush a tampon down the loo because I don't want to block the clients toilet.

So, aibu to ask you all to provide a bin for female visitors?

No, I couldn't leave a used tampon in someones bathroom bin. How embarrassing Blush.

NannyR · 06/04/2016 19:36

Tampons definitely should not be flushed - the only things that should go in the loo are pee, poo and paper.

Sparklingbrook · 06/04/2016 19:36

No Vintage because toilet paper is designed to be flushed and disintegrated very quickly.

When I empty the bathroom bin I knot the liner , but don't inspect the contents. Confused

witsender · 06/04/2016 19:37

We don't have a bathroom bin, never have. When I still used disposable sanpro (use reusables now) I just popped the waste in a biodegradable little bag, maybe in some tissue and straight in the normal bin. If out and about in my bag until it can go in a bin. It isn't rocket science.

Sparklingbrook · 06/04/2016 19:37

Come round to mine someone you can use my bin if you like. Smile

Vintage45 · 06/04/2016 19:38

Im a flusher and proud of it Grin

NoelHeadbands · 06/04/2016 19:38

I only have one bin in the house and it isn't in the bathroom.

When I used tampons I just bagged them and binned them later unless it was a public toilet that had one of those sealed bins

maddening · 06/04/2016 19:39

In a plastic bag in the Outside bin?

Sparklingbrook · 06/04/2016 19:41

Here's the list of what can and can't be flushed from the Severn Trent website for people who care about these things-

Only human waste, toilet tissue and a small amount of household cleaning products should be flushed down the toilet. Don't flush:

sanitary products
kitchen roll
cleansing wipes
baby and facial wipes
nappies
cotton buds

Top tip: Instead use nappy or sanitary bags then put them in the bin

whirlygirly · 06/04/2016 19:41

Flushers, I loathe you. We live in an area where flushed tampons, baby wipes etc block the drains and we have to call out dynorod at great expense. Not all sewerage systems can cope with flushed tampons even in this day and age.

Please be considerate and don't do this.

molyholy · 06/04/2016 19:42

So you expect your clients to dispose of your soaked through tampon? Why?

BanningTheWordNaice · 06/04/2016 19:42

Vintage - so you're proud of flushing something down the toilet that's bad for the enviroment and bad for public water treatments? Wow. What a great achievement to be proud of...

Owllady · 06/04/2016 19:45

You cant flush tampons down our toilet as we have a cess pit so we have a bathroom bin
It's a shame you weren't our carer today!:o

RudeElf · 06/04/2016 19:46

Well OP you would be more than welcome to put your tampon either wrapped or unwrapped in my bathroom bin. Its what it is there for. My bins are lidded and lined. I dont touch anything that is in them when i empty them, i just gather the bag and tie it. I also have a basket with scented nappy bags and wipes by the loo for anyone who needs to use them and a drawer with a supply of liners and tampons that you are welcome to hoke through too. Grin

AlpacaLypse · 06/04/2016 19:48

I'm with you all the way OP. Every loo in our house has a swing lid bin beside it, every bin has a liner, and somewhere in there, easily spotted and close at hand, by the loo roll, is a pack of supermarket own brand super towels with wings, the ones that come with their own wraps.

I haven't forgotten the utter mortification of coming on unexpectedly while staying with very elderly relatives when I was 14!

Vintage45 · 06/04/2016 19:48

In my area is fine.

Sparklingbrook · 06/04/2016 19:49

Who really rummages through a bathroom bin when they empty it? The OP's tampon would have been in a scented plastic bag anyway-nothing to see.

Sparklingbrook · 06/04/2016 19:50

I would check your water company's website Vintage that will tell you what is flushable in your area.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/04/2016 19:51

In the UK, Vintage ?

RudeElf · 06/04/2016 19:51

Your area is fine for what vintage?

GinAndSonic · 06/04/2016 19:51

Theres no room in my toilet for a bin. It's wide enough for the toilet, and the space in front, the door opens into. I put mine in the bin in the kitchen which is just outside of the toilet. There's a bin in the bathroom next door to it but the only space is behind the door so nobody really knows it's there. Theres a basket with tampons, towels, and scented bags on my toilet window sill though. People are welcome to help themselves.

limon · 06/04/2016 19:54

YABU. Just put it in the bag and in your handbag and put it in your own bin when you get to work or home. No biggie.

Vintage45 · 06/04/2016 19:54

So what do you actually think happens to tampons then? If you use a bin it goes to landfill doesn't it? I flush.

JuxtapositionRecords · 06/04/2016 19:55

Agree with limon

EssentialHummus · 06/04/2016 19:56

Check out FabLittleBags, currently the subject of a MN product test - yes, people should have bathroom bins, but these allow you to pop them in your handbag and dispose of outside.
