Anyone see the debate last night?

They both don't inspire me at all. The lib dem and greens did however look very promising!

Love the greens idea of land for free and people just paying for the building materials.

With second preferences, the first couple of replies on this thread don't make sense - you can vote for whoever you want as first choice and be strategic with your second, surely.

I don't know how anyone can vote for the non-dom son of a billionaire who recently voted to take £30 a week off disabled people

Totally agree. Completely out of touch and doesn't give a shit.

Sadiq Khan for me.

I still find it hilarious that Zac doesn't have the first clue about London or how people live in London going by This well circulated interview.

At least S.K. has some idea. Z.G is just another multi millionaire tax dodging London exploiter.

Anyway I'll be voting SK when the time comes.

Difficult
I agree that there's no sense of a real Londoner here, with Ken it was like me, if you cut us open, it's written through us like a stick of rock.

I can't vote for Zac. I don't feel thrilled about Sadiq and his Garden Bridge u turn pissed me off. But realistically I too might vote for Sadiq just to keep Zac out. But will any mayor just continue the inequality and let's make everything about tourists? Probably.

Tessa Jowell or Jeremy Corbyn woukd have been better.

I don't like either of them. Was discussing with DR the other night and we are both clueless.

The Green party has a "non male" group, that is your future with them.

Report
BYOSnowman · 06/04/2016 22:45

Is that considered the opposite of male now?

Report
lorelei9here · 06/04/2016 22:51

Muddha, I just don't see them as passionate Londoners who really get the unity of the place and of course Goldsmith has proved it with his horrible racial campaigning.

I didn't think Boris had it either, in fact I remember him thanking Ken when he took over and in his speech he paid tribute to Ken's innate Londonness.

The Greens aren't a serious party in my view, the non men thing really doesn't help matters.

Someone mentioned Bristol, what happened there?

I haven't liked any of the mayors to date. In fact despised might be a better word

I like Caroline Pidgeon best. She always comes across as somebody who has actually THOUGHT about the issues and come up with some sensible proposals to address them. And she's been on the GLA for 8 years, so she does know a bit about London government already.

I infinitely prefer her to either of the two main candidates who appear to think that their personalities alone should win them the election. Mistakenly.

BYOSnowman · 06/04/2016 23:02

I liked the look of her until I saw she is supporting the cycle superhighway!

I had some email correspondence with Caroline P over the Garden Bridge. She came across really well. I do hope she hasn't u turned on it as well....

Report
lalalonglegs · 06/04/2016 23:08

OK, Snowman, I've got to ask: what is the problem with the cycle superhighway? Smile

Report
BYOSnowman · 06/04/2016 23:17

Long story short - we just had a major road closed for water works and it has caused chaos (I am a bus user) and then it turns out that road is going to become cycle superhighway. By cutting out this road there is no east west cut through which causes a bottle neck and bus chaos!!

I'm fed up of cyclists being given priority and no focus on public transport.

Basically too long a story but I just want someone who won't focus on cycling and won't support the garden bridge

Report
Treats · 06/04/2016 23:22

Caroline P has been a vocal opponent of the Garden Bridge in the GLA - she plans to fund her transport plans by cutting the money that TfL have pledged to the bridge because - quite rightly - she asks why on earth they should be contributing to it. She's also put a lot of pressure on the Mayor to be more transparent about the procurement process and has unearthed some irregularities.

Agree with you about cycle superhighways BYO. I'm all for improving facilities for cyclists, but the superhighways are ridiculous.

lorelei9here · 06/04/2016 23:25

Snowman, agree, the cycle lanes have made many bus journeys a 100 times worse, I feel like the aim is for everyone to use the tube or a bike. Roads wing cope with the superhighway and I am starting to wonder how much they will be used? The one along Victoria Embankmnt is pretty empty.

Also cycle lanes have caused major issues with hailing cabs, problems for elderly, disabled and wheelchair users.

lorelei9here · 06/04/2016 23:27

Treats, glad yo hear Caroline hasn't u turned and is still on the case.
I have become so disillusioned with politics, I haven't paid that much attention lately. I think my main objective is just don't let Zac get in.

Report
BYOSnowman · 06/04/2016 23:28

Yay! I'm not alone

There is no way I can get the kids to school and me to work on bikes. It's just not possible. So I have to suffer an almost doubling of my bus journey on some days because of it? It I take the already overcrowded tube

The outer circle of Regent's Park is going to be cycle only so the traffic on the surrounding roads is going to be terrible - as is the parking at weekends.

I like Sadiq, but not sure about him for Mayor. Voting for him anyway, as Zac is ultimately grim and the rest = waste vote.

Sadiq is 100% a genuine Londoner - he grew up in the council estate up the road (in Earlsfield, near Tooting), went to the local non selective 'bog standard comp', and I read his Dad was a bus driver or something? He still managed to do very well, and go on to study Law at uni.

He's our local MP, has always been very active in the area, regularly visits schools and various local events and groups, and has always given the impression of being a hardworking and decent guy. He is a little on the unimaginative side for my taste, and tends to toe the party line, but he's vastly preferable to Zac Goldsmith who has had nothing but a privileged upbringing. Unfortunately, ZG comes across better on camera (heavily coached, I suspect) so I think it will be a close run thing in the end, despite what the polls say at the moment.

lorelei9here · 06/04/2016 23:41

Snowman didn't realise that about the Outer Circle! I struggle with the Tube and the bus is way cheaper anyway. I think a lot of people are pissed off about the cycle superhighway but it's one of those issues where very few speak out. I really think it will have, is already having, a very bad effect for elderly and/or disabled Londoners.

Forkhandles, what is MOR please?

I may vote Sadiq just to stop Zac but tbh I don't believe a word Sadiq says, he strikes me as having no integrity. I listened to him explain how he was going to solve London's housing shortage...very glib... I just thought well if its oh so easy according to how you explain it, how come it hasn't been done before? If he wins I am really interested to see how he backtracks fulfils his commitment to increased affordable housing

I have a sinking feeling Zac will win. Being well spoken wearing a good suit and being fairly charismatic on camera goes a long way with the populace in general, I find
