To ask our guest not to eat the baby-food?

DH's friend and his partner are staying for a few nights. I've met her on 2 occasions, she seems very nice, normal, friendly.

On their arrival I told them to help themselves to anything from kitchen, showed them the snacks cupboard, fruit, fridge etc. Plenty of biscuits, chocolate, crackers, cake, yogurts, cheese etc. Baby food is in bottom half of cupboard.

This morning I found 2 empty jars of Heinz baby porridge in the recycling, along with an empty pouch of purred mango. Mid-morning I noticed her eating a baby cocoa-vanilla dessert straight from the jar! Confused

I don't know what to do! DH thinks it's hilarious and says not to mention it. I'm irritated as the jars are expensive, they are for DS and there is plenty of other food.

AIBU to think this is really weird and rude? Should I hide the jars or let her carry on?

Chocolatteaddict1 · 30/03/2016 15:22

Weird. Why would you eat food specifically destined for a baby?

She either has sore teeth/gums or is one of those folk thst always need what's not theirs dd1

Just hide it all op

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 30/03/2016 15:22

It wouldn't have even occurred to me to eat baby food! Just do as PPs have said, point out nicely that it's there specifically for DS and there's plenty of other stuff she's welcome to eat.

The mind bloody boggles!

livsmommy · 30/03/2016 15:22

Maybe it's some kind of diet? I'm sure I've heard of the baby food diet!

Katarzyna79 · 30/03/2016 15:23

aha bum very good for picnics no need to rush home.

ifailed Hmm

Millymollymoo8 · 30/03/2016 15:24

Processed baby food is shit, it is heated to a very high temperature and looses most of its nutritional value. It is also very sweet.

Feed your baby real food.

You did tell her to help herself ( can't imagine anyone eating baby food though)

nocabbageinmyeye · 30/03/2016 15:24

Yes! It's Heinz Egg Custard in a little blue and green can Katarzyna that's lovely too, you can get it in chocolate too i think but its not as nice Grin

Katarzyna79 · 30/03/2016 15:28

yes cabbage ive tried that too lool Not like this guest though. i reckon she doesn't know it's baby food Grin

Butteredparsnips · 30/03/2016 15:28

LivsMommy - I think you could be correct. I have a feeling I read about a celebrity maybe Jennifer Anniston (maybe not) saying she had lost weight by eating baby food. Weird though. And rude.

Fivegomad · 30/03/2016 15:29

millymollymoo8
What OP feeds her baby is none of your business, and not relevant to her AIBU.
Let's not turn this into yet another thread where the OP asks a reasonable question, and ends up getting flamed for a perfectly reasonable life choice.

Chinks123 · 30/03/2016 15:32

I know some people are saying "food is food" but really if I was a guest and was told to eat whatever, I wouldn't literally think "well thats clearly baby food but I can eat whatever" yes food is food but baby jars are expensive and specifically for the baby.

I'd only be miffed because like you said jars are expensive. I'm going to bet she doesn't know it's baby food and has no tastebuds Confused

slism.com/diet/baby-food-diet.html

Odd but real.

Chinks123 · 30/03/2016 15:33

millymolly I didn't see that the OP asked whether she should give her baby jars or not Hmm

Fpmd1710 · 30/03/2016 15:33

YANBU. I get that she likes the baby food, I don't find that strange because I actually love those jars of food myself Grin . It is rude of her however to be eating it when it is clearly your DS' food. Like you said, there is plenty of other food for her to eat. I have my younger sisters round mine at least a few times a week and I let it be known that they're not to eat the yogurts for my DS, and my sisters are just kids but they get it. The fact that your DS' food is in actual baby jars should mean you don't even need to make it clear that it's off limits, especially to an adult.

Sunnybitch · 30/03/2016 15:38

Can you say something along the lines of "ooh I hope that's not the last jar of dc's rice pudding or they are not gona be happy with you " atleast then she knows to watch what she's eating and that its freaking baby food and will stick to big kids stuff Grin

MollyRedskirts · 30/03/2016 15:39

She's being odd. Just tell her not to eat the baby's food. Although, maybe she can't cook, or she's being epically lazy. Is the baby food the only ready to grab food you have?

I used to buy jars of Heinz's baby chocolate pudding when I was a skint student, but that's because it was cheaper than normal pudding, lasted forever because it was tinned, and had the added bonus of not getting pinched by my housemates because they thought it was weird. Grin

My mum is very much looking forward to my weaning DS, so she can steal some rusks. I'm not sure how to break it to her that I won't be buying them...

liquidrevolution · 30/03/2016 15:43

Ask her if she needs a bib 😁

carabos · 30/03/2016 15:44

Sorry but this is hilarious. I get that food is food, but honestly who does that? It's very very odd. I would take the line of least resistance and just hide the baby food until she's gone. Look on the bright side, it's a great anecdote Wink Grin.

NerrSnerr · 30/03/2016 15:45

How strange. I would ask her if she realises it's baby food

Milly I knew there'd be someone on here getting uppity about baby food. The OP didn't ask for advice on how to feed her child.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 30/03/2016 15:49

Yep agree with Katarzyna Ready Brek it is

Don't knkw if they have changed the recipe or not but ready Brek used to have loads of salt in

Notimefortossers · 30/03/2016 15:51

I'm with your DH in that this is hilarious Wink

Katarzyna79 · 30/03/2016 15:52

i duno i get scots porridge original oats now, i prefer the bite. But if its for her guest its fine, i think she wants purees consistency lool

baby would do well with a smooth or chunky oat long as its well cooked it mashes up.

NerrSnerr · 30/03/2016 15:54

Ready Brek doesn't have much salt in it now.

To ask our guest not to eat the baby-food?
Katarzyna79 · 30/03/2016 15:55

i remember mum letting us try baby milk powder it was lovely. but i tried it with the cow and gate one i used few years back and it tasted horrid lol. I guess the sma one my mum used on us had a lot more sugar in it, it was sweeter as i recall.

At least you don't have formula lying around OP she'd be sprinkling that on her baby porridge like sugar ROFL

BumWad · 30/03/2016 15:55

Don't knkw if they have changed the recipe or not but ready Brek used to have loads of salt in

No salt in ready brek anymore, it's the same with Farleys Rusks
