That the nursery didn't change DD's

Nappy for 4 hours. I dropped her off at 8 and she wasn't changed until 12. She's 18 months and would have been changed twice in that time as she wees loads. They are normally quite chunky after her naps (TMI I know!)
Appreciate I've only got her though and they have others to change.
She's got nappy rash tonight 🙁
Genuinely I don't know whether to mention it to them tomorrow or just leave it.

Nappy rash is sometimes unavoidable, particularly if a child has an acidic nappy due to teething and is sensitive.

Op, it might be the amount of Sudocrem you're using. You only need a thin film. If you use too much, you affect the absorbancy of the nappy and that can cause nappy rash.

TiredOfSleep · 30/03/2016 18:39

My DD could be in a nappy 6 hours and not have any prob. More than 10-20 mins in a poo though and her bottom is red.

Artandco · 30/03/2016 18:46

I think it's gross to be left 4+ hrs. Even if only a dribble of wee its going to be unpleasant and smelly after a few hours.

Reusable nappies here. Changed every 2-3 hrs.

ImNotThatGirl · 30/03/2016 19:42

Some little ones are fine with every 4 hours but the nursery should be checking if the nappy looks heavy, especially in those who go a lot.

I'm Shock at only changing twice a day.

allowlsthinkalot · 30/03/2016 20:00

I only ever change my 16 month old during the day if she does a poo. So usually just at lunchtime. Obviously she gets a new nappy in the morning and for bed. If she got nappy rash I'd change her more often or if the nappy seemed heavy.

I would be surprised if a child needed changing within a four hour window and you probably need to tell them.

How on earth do you know the volume of water she drinks? Mine just drinks as and when?

Sheezus · 30/03/2016 20:23

Can I ask about the nappy rash? I don't think the frequency should matter much as previous posters have mentioned they are in nappies overnight without issue.
Have you recently gone up a size in nappies or changed brand?

I was buying a particular brand for my first. She went up a nappy size and I don't know if they changed the make up of the nappy or what but she started getting an horrendous rash. I didn't make the connection with nappies until my sister mentioned hers had a reaction too years previously. I changed brand and it was like you flicked a switch. Completely clear bottom within days.
Now, if she had been in a childcare facility I would have thought it was them but we were the only ones changing her.

UmbongoUnchained · 30/03/2016 20:32

I obviously didn't count the bedtime one and morning one as those are just standard, everyone does those. But during the day, twice tops. She's starting to potty train now and had good bladder control so does one big wee rather than lots of little ones through out the day.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 30/03/2016 20:36

My child's nursery changes 5 times a day and whenever they smell a poo. While you can go 12 hours overnight, they're not drinking so aren't going to wee as much. Changing once during the day would not be enough for my 18m old baby.

ElderlyKoreanLady · 30/03/2016 20:57

I don't think DD's nursery have ever reported more than 3 nappy changes to me and that's on an 8-6 day, sent in wearing a fresh one. That works out at about 2.5 hours per nappy including the one I send her in wearing. I can't imagine it needing to be more frequent so am really surprised at how many here are saying their nurseries do 5 changes a day!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/03/2016 21:53

Wow - this thread has been an eye opener Grin In the day I changed DD whenever she was wet - I take it that is not normal.then?

LittleNelle · 30/03/2016 21:57

How would you know every time she was wet?

Artandco · 30/03/2016 21:58

Little - you can smell when they wee.

longdiling · 30/03/2016 22:02

If she drinks a lot then it sounds like she would definitely benefit from more frequent nappy changes. I go by the very scientific 'squidge' test instead of by a set number of hours. If their nappies feel a bit squidgy rather than flat and dry then I change them. Some kids I look after don't drink much and only need a change at lunchtime and late afternoon. Others are every couple of hours. None have nappy rash, parents are all happy. I would absolutely change more frequently on request though - your nappies, your choice! Only takes a second and it's not going to hurt to change very frequently

LittleNelle · 30/03/2016 22:03

I have never noticed a smell from nappies from wee.

Artandco · 30/03/2016 22:05

Well it's wee, it should smell a bit surely

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/03/2016 22:05

Little

It might depend on the brand. I've noticed pampers smell quite strongly if my daughter so much as considers doing a wee, whereas other brands do not.

LittleNelle · 30/03/2016 22:07

Oh yes, I have noticed Pampers smell quite vile on the odd occasion we've had them.

UmbongoUnchained · 30/03/2016 22:08

Agree with pampers. Used them once and never again. She was honking.

scotsgirl64 · 30/03/2016 22:16

4 hrs is not excessive, although she may not be well....is she teething?... Maybe urine a bit more irritant than normal?.... Sudacrem is brilliant for nappy rash btw!

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/03/2016 22:17

I prefer Asda nappies but have been using pampers as my dad picked them up for me as they were on offer. I won't be purchasing them again!

LeanneBattersby · 30/03/2016 22:21

Can I just clarify I don't regularly leave my 16 month old in a nappy for eight hours. Thanks for the outrage though Grin

I meant I could, at a guess, leave him for that length of time before his nappy started leaking or he got nappy rash.

He's changed, like most babies, aboit every four hours. But I wouldn't worry too much if this stretched to five. He's never had nappy rash.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/03/2016 22:30

Itsallgoingtobefine - it's normal with your first dc to change every wee, with your second with every poo, and with your third when the nappy's dragging round their ankles.

NeverNic · 30/03/2016 22:31

What Leanne Battersby said. Would also check that the nappy brand and wipes they use match yours.

My children did get nappy rash if left in a wet nappy. They have sensitive skin and weren't used to being left that long (at that age they didn't wee throughout the night, only towards the end). Just tell them your child needs to be changed more frequently.

Thebookswereherfriends · 30/03/2016 22:33

In the nursery I worked in we always checked mid morning, lunchtime, mid afternoon and just before home time. Even if they didn't need changing it would be written that they had been checked. A child should definitely be at least checked before 4 hours and if you knew what time that child went home then we would check 30 mins or so before parent arrived - it doesn't look great for a caring profession to be sending children home wet/dirty.

NeverNic · 30/03/2016 22:39

Alasalas - I must have very unusual poo-ers. My eldest (who admittedly has chronic constipation) would poo every three days and my second likes a good poo first thing. 😜 Excluding teething or bugs, we could (though we wouldn't) get through an 8hr day without a change.
